The Power of Prayer

CA hosts community-wide prayer service

The Guardian-Journal photos/Jenni Williams

Claiborne Academy hosted a community-wide prayer service on Tuesday, July 24 to pray for those in need and those who have lost loved ones. The theme for the service was “Where hope grows, miracles blossom.”

Claiborne Academy Headmistress Jane Brown, pictured left, said it was important to start the new school year with prayer. “We wanted to pray for our schools, our children and our families in our community,” Brown said. “It’s important for us to work together, because it’s true that it takes a village to raise a child. We thought our community as a whole was in need of prayer. We have individuals in our community that need special prayer and we also thought it would be important to start our new school year with prayer.

Teen charged with carnal knowledge

The Guardian-Journal

A Homer teen was arrested for felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile after the mother of one girl filed a complaint against him.

Jermund Curry, 19, of Homer, was arrested on Thursday, July 26, on two counts of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile and one count of computer solicitation for sexual purposes and two failure to appear warrants.

According to Homer Police, they received a complaint from the mother of one of the alleged victims, claiming Curry had sex with her daughter, who is 14-years-old. Homer Police Sgt. Van McDaniel said he was provided with messages from a Facebook account with Curry and the 14-year-old girl having a conversation with each other about having sex.

The victim was taken to Pines Advocacy Center in Ruston where she was interviewed. When McDaniel interviewed Curry on the date of his arrest, he said Curry admitted to having sex with the girl.

During the course of McDaniel’s investigation, he learned of another girl, also age 14, with whom Curry had sex with, in fact, fathering a child with her. McDaniel said at the time the girl became pregnant, she was only 13. During that same interview with Curry, McDaniel also reported that he admitted to sexual relations with a third underage girl.

The investigation is still ongoing and other charges may be pending.

“The law is clear,” McDaniel said. “Even though the girls were willing, he took advantage of them.”

Bond on the two counts of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile was set at $25,000 each and the computer solicitation for sexual purposes also carries a bond of $25,000. One failure to appear, bond was set at $500, and Curry will have to serve 10 days in jail on the other failure to appear warrant.

Homer Police Chief Russell Mills said there may be others than the ones already been reported, and he encourages them to come forward. Please call the Homer Police Department at 318-927-4000.

“We believe there could be more victims and if so, we urge them to come forward,” Mills said.

Ride home turns into ride to jail

The Guardian-Journal

A ride home turned out to be a ride to jail for a Homer man.

According to a press release from the Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office, on Thursday, July 26, Deputy John Eric Stephenson was on patrol and observed a male subject on Hwy. 9 attempting to flag him down.

The subject was identified as Kataris D. Eddens, 30, of Homer, and Eddens requested a ride.

Dispatch was notified by Stephenson and the routine check for warrants was initiated while Stephenson transported Eddens to his residence.

 It was discovered that Eddens had an outstanding warrant for failure to pay child support.

Eddens was transported to the Claiborne Parish Detention Center, where he was booked for the warrant. During booking procedures, Stephenson discovered a pack of cigarette rolling papers commonly used to role marijuana joints in Eddens’ possession.

Upon leaving the detention center, Stephenson also discovered a small clear plastic bag of a green leafy substance similar in appearance to marijuana lying in the rear driver’s side floorboard where Eddens had been sitting.

Eddens was charged with failure to pay child support with a $7,000 payoff and simple possession of Schedule I CDS (marijuana) with bond set at $500.

Teaching safety to our kids

Louisiana State Police Troop G Public Information Officer Matt Harris wanted to take the time to speak with the children of Little Ones Day Care in Homer last week in reference to Stranger Danger, Bicycle Safety and the importance of Gun Safety.  Harris says it is never too early to educate our children on these topics, especially when it comes to fire arms.  Harris also said that he was very impressed with the parents of our community, because the children provide feedback on all topics and were very knowledgeable about the dangers of fire arms. Pictured above, Harris and his son Tucker take a group photo with Little Ones children. Pictured left, Harris and Tucker talk to the other kids about fire arm safety.

Louisiana State Police investigated an accident on Hwy. 519 on Friday, July 27, where Elijah M. Flowers, 18, of Arcadia was traveling at a high rate of speed in a 2005 gold Chevy Silverado headed southbound. According to Troop G PIO Matt Harris, Flowers then failed to negotiate a curve to the left, lost control of the vehicle, exited the roadway to the right and struck a tree. Claiborne Parish tourism initiative is underway

JIMMY DEAN, Feature Writer

The Claiborne Chamber of Commerce has put together an assortment of materials to highlight where to go and what to do and see in Claiborne Parish. “Whether you’re a visitor or a local resident,Brochures and the Two Disc Driving CD available at several area locations - Click to Visit ClaiborneParishTourism.org Claiborne Parish has a driving tour CD set that you will find interesting,” says John Watson, Executive Director of the Chamber.

“The CD is one part of a major initiative aimed at helping others see and appreciate what is wonderful about Claiborne Parish,” Watson notes.

Asked what else is a part of the initiative, Watson explains that a colorful tourism brochure has been prepared. In addition,  there is a new website www.claiborneparishtourism.org.

Also, a cemetery brochure includes a map of the parish with the locations of 156 cemeteries in the parish or within a few miles of the parish line.

Finally, television ads have appeared describing Claiborne Parish as a desirable tourist destination.

Describing the tourism brochure, Watson says it highlights points of interest in Homer, Haynesville, Athens, Lisbon, Summerfield, and other areas of Claiborne Parish. It points out that 10 buildings in the parish are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The brochure includes pictures of the Claiborne Parish Courthouse, Herbert S. Ford Museum, Lisbon’s Killgore House, the mural on the west wall of Haynesville’s Killgore Pharmacy,  Homer’s Old Town Cemetery, the Hill Farm, Summerfield’s Alberry Wasson House, and Lake Claiborne.

The cover of the “Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, Cemetery Guide” notes that it is intended to be “A guide to finding the resting places of your ancestors.” A brief description gives directions for each of the 156 cemeteries There is also a map in the brochure marking the approximate location of each.

The new tourism website, www.claiborneparishtourism.org, describes Lake Claiborne State Park and lists local lodging such as Panther Creek Bed and Breakfast at Summerfield and Lake Claiborne Vacation Cottage on Harmon Loop.

The website describes “eateries” such as the Rebel Stop and Moon’s toward Summerfield, Port-au-Prince on Lake Claiborne, Sunrise Bakery and Restaurant and Homer Seafood and Pizza as well as Yesterday’s Grill in Haynesville.

Highlights related to Homer, Haynesville, Lisbon, Athens, Summerfield, and the parish’s historic cemeteries are all mentioned on the website.

Some parish events are plugged including the Butterfly Festival, the Claiborne Jubilee, the 4th of July Fireworks and Boat Parade, Lake Claiborne Antique Auto and Bike Show, and the Christmas Festival.

The set consists of two CDs with 41 tracks of information highlighting areas of interest around the parish. For only $3 visitors or local residents can learn things about Claiborne Parish that’s not in the history books, stories passed down from grandparents to grandchildren that has become the stuff of local legend and lore.

Of course, the internet website is free as is the tourism brochure. With the cemetery guide available for $1 and the driving CD sets for $3, the whole tourism package is available for $4, a token cost to cover expenses of production.

Many local citizens donated many hours to the brochures, the cemetery guide, the driving CDs, and the website.

Brochures and CD sets are available at the following locations:

* The Grapevine

* Port-au-Prince Restaurant

* Killgore Pharmacy

* The Rebel Stop

* Claiborne Parish Library

* Delta Interiors

* The Chamber Office at Ford Museum

Brochures only are available at the following:
