Legislators Push For I-69 Funding

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

Congressman and I-69 Co-Chair Roger Wicker submitted a letter signed by ten Senators, including John Breaux and Mary Landrieu, and 38 Congressman, including Jim McCrery, Chris John, and David Vitter, to James Inhofe, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and Don Young, Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure on September 16. The letter asked that I-69 be given priority consideration in the National Corridor Infrastructure Improvement Program and the Projects of National and Regional Significance during Conference. The selection criteria included would qualify I-69 to receive a funding level equal to the House bill.

I-69 Meeting

Claiborne Parish Chamber President J. T. Taylor; John D. Caruthers, Chairman of the I-69 Coalition; Don Pierson with Bossier Economic Development and member of the I-69 Coalition, and Haynesville Mayor Mickey Mayfield recently met to discuss the interstate and other transportation needs in the area.

CPSO Arrests Two For Theft

Claiborne Parish Sheriff Ken Bailey announced this week that Jerry W. Jones, 47, of 721 Oceanview Drive in Dallas, Texas was arrested by Louisiana State Trooper Jason Russell on October 22, 2004 for simple burglary and theft over $500. According to Bailey, a shop building located on Harris Road owned by Dr. John Tinsley was burglarized in the early pre-dawn hours of August 20. There were signs of a forced entry and a large amount of shop tools were stolen. Also taken was a utility trailer and two 4-wheelers that were parked in the carport.

According to Sheriff Bailey, another theft reported in August led to the arrest of Kevin M. Worzalla, 43, of Las Vegas, Nevada. On August 12, Billy Lafitte of Homer reported several items stolen from a storage building on Hwy. 2 near Homer. The building had burned after several shotguns and rifles, an air compressor and telescope had been taken.

Equestrian Facility, Flat Lick's First Development

BY JANE TOADVIN

"What is that thing?" That is the question numerous people have stopped by to ask about the strange `big white tent' being erected just above the proposed Flat Lick Lake. "Is it a new kind of chicken house?" Well, I guess you could use it for that. "What kind of factory are you building?" It could be used for that as well. "Is the circus coming to town?" Ummm...I don't think so. At least I hope not.

In fact the strange `big white tent' is the beginning of the state of the art Flatlick Equestrian Facility. Under the `big top' will be numerous stalls for both training and boarding horses, a spacious feed and tack room, a heated wash stall with hot water, of course bathroom facilities, and an indoor riding/training arena. In addition there will be picturesque woodland trails to ride, and several outdoor riding and training areas. Seeded pastures will allow your horse to be a horse between training sessions.

Noted Professional Trainer Jaimey Taborda has agreed to come here from Miami, Florida to lend his expertise to training horses and to supervise their care. Jaimey has spent his entire life with horses. He has studied John Lyons techniques and is also in the process of certifying as a Parelli instructor. Jaimey has found that a practical combination of the traditional training techniques and those of the new age "horse whisperers" works best. He believes he must be adaptable to each individual horse and that humane methods will always achieve the best results.

Buddy and Jane Toadvin would like to invite area horse people to visit and are planning an informal "barnwarming" and potluck the evening of November 6. Please feel welcome to stop by, bring a dish to pass, and dance in the sand of the new arena. Gary Coburn and his band will provide entertainment for the evening. You can even `test ride' a Paso Fino. The new Flatlick Equestrian Center is located on Hwy. 546, the Germantown Road or Minden-Haynesville Hwy. about 10 miles west of Homer and 1½  miles south of Hwy. 2.

Flatlick Equestrian Facility

THIS BIG WHITE TENT is the latest in space age technology, soon to be completed Flatlick Equestrian Facility. Noted professional trainer Jaimey Taborda recently agreed to move to Claiborne Parish with his family to lend his expertise to training horses and supervise their care.  Owners Buddy and Jane Toadvin invite area horse people to attend an informal barnwarming and potluck Saturday evening, Nov. 6 at the facility located on Germantown Road about 10 miles west of Homer.

Haynesville Council Moves Ahead On Street Project

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

The Haynesville Town Council voted to move ahead on their street program, giving Mayor Mickey Mayfield the authority to go ahead and start resurfacing streets already designated in the Town's street program. Mayfield said the rainy season is coming up and if the council continues to table the issue it would be too late to get anything done this year. Joyce Major asked which overlay would be used. Mayfield suggested a 2-inch layer of hot mix. Superintendent Mike Dunaway said they had not located anyone who could do the SB2 surface.

Alvin Kendrick asked why rush to a decision. He felt the Council should have some input. Mayfield said the Council has already approved the list of streets. Kendrick said he had no problem as long as all the streets approved were resurfaced, but wanted some input on which streets the mayor would select and voted against the motion.

Claiborne Chamber of Commerce President J. T. Taylor informed the Council of the recent visit to Claiborne Parish by State DOTD Secretary Johnny Bradberry. Taylor gave credit to State Representative Rick Gallot for setting up the meeting. Bradberry gave an update of the State's road budget and

250 Get Flu Shots

The Claiborne Parish Health Unit gave 250 flu shots Tuesday, October 26. Due to work on the parking lot, health officials decided to move to the First Presbyterian Church to administer the shots. Two nurses were on hand to give shots until they ran out of the vaccine sometime after lunch.

Those eligible for the shot were  children aged 6-23 months, adults aged 65 years and older, people aged 2-64 years with underlying chronic medical conditions, and pregnant women.

It is never too late to get the flu shot, so individuals who did not get the shot this week should check back with the Health Unit in about two weeks to see if they have received another shipment of the vaccine.

Below are a few simple actions to help stop the spread of germs and minimize the risk of getting the flu:

∙ Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

∙ Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

∙ Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

∙ Clean Your Hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.

∙ Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose Or Mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

Other good habits, such as getting plenty of sleep, engaging in physical activity, managing stress, drinking water, and eating good food will help you stay healthy in the winter and all year.
