No Serious Injuries In 4-Vehicle Accident

Area Opposition Growing Over I-69 Corridor 1d

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

Homer Police officers responded to an accident involving four vehicles around 11:15 AM on Friday, April 23 on Hwy. 79S in front of M&M Hardware. According to investigating officer Jimmy Faulkner, a 1985 Chevy Sierra truck driven by Arthur Norton, Jr., 61, of Homer backed out from the M&M parking lot onto Hwy. 79 in front of Pidgie Lee Taylor, 68, of Homer,  who was eastbound on Hwy. 79 in a 1982 Ford station wagon. Taylor slowed down to avoid hitting the truck, but was hit from behind by a third vehicle, a 2001 Toyota Sienna van driven by Robert Sills Boon, Jr., 62, of Spring, Texas. Boon had slowed down but was rear-ended by a fourth vehicle, a 2000 Freightliner tractor-trailer rig driven by Melvin M. Broadway, Jr. 34, of Shelbyville, Texas. This pushed the Boon vehicle forward into the Taylor vehicle, forcing it off the roadway to the right, then hit the back of the truck driven by Norton.

Besides the four drivers, there were two passengers in the Norton vehicle, Eugene Norton, Sr. and James Minnifield, both of Homer. Taylor and Boon were transported to Homer Memorial Hospital where they were kept overnight for observation and later released.

Wreckers from Gordon's Service Center and McKenzie Bros. Garage removed all four vehicles from the scene.

Norton was charged with failure to back up safely onto a roadway and for having no working stop or signal lights. Broadway was charged with following too closely behind a vehicle.

Gas Express Robbed

Suspect Arrested

Gas Express, a convenience store located on Hwy. 79S across from M&M Hardware in Homer, was broken into around 5:30 AM on Saturday, April 17 after the security alarm was activated. Homer Police Sgt. Jimmy Hamilton arrived on the scene at 5:33 AM and found the glass window behind the Coke machine had been broken out and a large cement block lying in front of the window. Hamilton and a store employee discovered several packs of silver menthol and kings menthol cigarettes, several neon lighters and several bottles of Busch beer missing. Two neon lighters were lying on the floor near the cooler.

The shift changed at 6 AM. Officers Jim Faulkner and Gary English arrived on the scene. Hamilton, now off duty, was traveling westbound on North Main when he noticed a black male walking north on West 4th Street, with what appeared to be several dark bottles sticking out of his pockets. He radioed Faulkner and English. The subject was stopped and searched. Officers found nine bottles of beer, 37 packs of cigarettes, and 5 neon lighters. They also found a silver metal object known to used for smoking crack cocaine.

Gregory Eugene Dockery, 43, of White Oak Road in Homer, was arrested and transported to the Claiborne Detention Center where he was charged with unauthorized entry to place of business, criminal damage to property, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $7,000.

In a separate case, Melissa Ann Robertson of Homer, an employee at Pak-A-Bag admitted to stealing about $260 from the store. She was arrested April 15 following a complaint filed by owner Jerry Andrews. Bond was set at $500. The investigating officer was Russell Mills.

Homer Renews Contract With Fire District 4

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

The Homer Town Council approved a resolution at a special called meeting on Monday, April 26 authorizing Mayor Huey Dean to renew the intergovernmental agreement with Claiborne Parish Fire District 4. Homer Fire Chief Dennis Butcher said voters recently renewed the tax in Fire District 4 and the District would like to continue their contract with the Town to provide fire protection for a five-mile radius around Homer. In the past 10 years, Fire District 4 has paid the Town $25,000 per year. These funds were used to build the fire station and purchase the last fire truck.

Mayor Dean presented several past due invoices from Homer Tire Center totaling over $900. All the invoices were charged during the previous administration and some dated as far back as April 2001. Councilman J. C. Moore said he realized the Town was responsible for the invoices, but he wanted to know why the invoices had not been paid for that length of time. Jesse Ford said Homer Tire was not the only account the Town had problems paying. Crow-Burlingame, McKenzie Bros., and Wal-Mart all closed their accounts with the Town during the same time period because they were having trouble getting payment from the Town. Emerson Oil almost closed their account as well. The Council voted to pay the past due amount owed to Homer Tire.

Homer Elementary Students Move To

New School Building

Homer Elementary Principal Pat Lee said, "I am excited to be here. It will take a few days to get everything where it needs to be, but it will be great when we get there." Lee is talking about the recent completion of the two new wings behind the school. Elementary students were given two days off, Friday and Monday, to allow faculty members to pack up and move from the existing building to their new classrooms. The move was hectic at times, with no phones, no intercom, no running water, but the faculty was still all smiles. Although only weeks away from summer vacation, they realized the move was necessary to ensure renovations to the existing building would be completed by the time school starts this fall.

School Board Maintenance Supervisor Ronnie McKenzie is overseeing the school construction project. He said crews have already begun work on the old building. They will work two shifts, 16 hours a day, through the summer to finish before school starts. Walls will be moved to make rooms larger. Classrooms will be set up the same as classrooms in the new building with new lighting, blackboards, bulletin boards, flooring and storage.

Third grade teacher Russell Tabor said he was extremely excited about moving into the new building. When he joined the staff at Homer Elementary School last year, he knew they had a great group of professional educators and administrators and the new building will enhance the education of the children.

"Evidence from the higher test scores show teachers at Homer Elementary work very hard with students, but even a $25 million building is not the answer for struggling students," said Tabor. "Studies show students do better at school when their parents are involved with their education. This new building is a great thing, but the help it provides teachers and students at school will be wasted if more parents do not get involved. Students cannot take the building home with them."

I-69 Corridor Selection

Lions Encouraged To Support Jubilee

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

Cynthia Steele was the guest speaker at the April 22 meeting of the Homer Lions Club. She told members the Claiborne Parish Jubilee was started in 1959 as the Homer Sidewalk Art Show through the guidance of local art teacher Anita Peterson and the Women's Department Club. She gave members an overview of activities being planned for this year's Claiborne Parish Jubilee and Art Show to be held Saturday, May 15 in conjunction with Armed Forces Day and the Lions Club BBQ Chicken fundraiser. Local art teacher Rhonda Porter suggested the theme for this year's Jubilee, "Honoring Families on the Homefront." Local artist Anita Peterson has agreed to direct the Art Show this year, with help from daughters Judy Buckner and Belinda Hays. Also helping are art teachers Rhonda Porter, Becky Lowe, and Susie Allen.

In line with the Jubilee theme, Porter held a parish wide contest for students in both public and private schools. Using the outline of a star she asked students to describe "what home means to me". Awards were given for the best in elementary, junior high, high school, and best overall. The best overall design was used to design wooden plaques to be presented to the families of active service members.

Lynn May will demonstrate flower arranging and David Hood his wood carving, and Wal-Mart Manager and new Lion Member Yamada Burks has agreed to oversee a Cake Walk. Steele asked members to consider sponsoring some of the awards for this year's show, as well as help in setting up and handing out invitations.
