Marilyn Bush Released, Placed On Probation

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

Former Haynesville Town Clerk Marilyn Bush was released from custody from the Union Parish Sheriff's Office on Thursday, February 19 following a hearing held in the Claiborne Parish Courthouse. District Judge Jenifer Clason vacated the ten year sentence she imposed on Bush in April 2002 and resentenced her to a ten year suspended sentence and placed her on four years supervised probation.

Bush was also ordered to pay $100,000 toward restitution to the Town of Haynesville. In addition, she will have to submit to random drug and alcohol testing and must attend gambling abuse counseling. She was also told she could not go to any gambling establishment. Clason made it clear that if she did not abide by the conditions of her sentence her probation could be revoked and in spite of her paying the $100,000, she would go back to jail and serve the rest of her ten year sentence.

Chief Given More Authority To Discipline Officers

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

The Haynesville Town Council voted to go into executive session at their regular meeting on Thursday, February 12 to discuss police matters. After reconvening in open session, the Council approved Keith Killgore's motion to give Police Chief Jim Garner authority to implement disciplinary action with up to five days suspension without pay to his police officers when policies and procedures are not followed. Killgore, Joyce Major, Alvin Kendrick, and Otto Black voted in favor of the motion. H. U. "Mutt" Slaid voted against.  Slaid wanted to delay approval until Garner presented a copy of the policies and procedures to the Council. Mayor Mickey Mayfield said he would ask Town Attorney Danny Newell if it were possible to make it retroactive.

Mayfield presented a list of 27  of the most traveled streets previously designated to be in the worst shape. With the help of Lee Underwood with Balar Engineers, they measured the streets and estimated the cost to overlay them. The estimated cost to blacktop the streets measuring 29,400 feet at $11.44 per foot was $336,326. He told them they could go to another cheaper option by using SB2 surface at $5.21 per foot for $153,174. Figures were based on an overlay  2" thick and 18' wide.

Haynesville Lions Discuss I-69

Efforts toward highway construction and improvement in Claiborne Parish were discussed at the February 17 luncheon meeting of the Haynesville Lions Club held at the Haynesville Country Club. Featured speaker was J. T. Taylor, recently elected president of the Homer/Claiborne Chamber of Commerce. He appealed for joint support of efforts undertaken by the Chamber.

Taylor's remarks included location and construction of I-69, a bypass on US 79 around Homer, and adding turn lanes on US 79 in Homer and Haynesville. The I-69 project received the most attention, both from Taylor and from Lions in the audience. He pointed out that his home is in Haynesville and his business office is in Homer, thus he is interested in benefits for both towns.

PowerWedge Gives Homeowners The Edge

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

Concerned about burglars? Wonder if someone might attempt a break-in to your home one day? Do you worry if your door locks will be strong enough to keep them out? How would you like to put a "power wedge" between you and that potential intruder?

It was those very thoughts that helped Homer resident Ronnie Anderson design a device that would do a better job protecting his home from intruders. In the early 1990s while working in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, someone attempted to break in Anderson's motel room. He realized how easy it would be for someone to break in with the existing locking system, since most locks and dead bolts are attached to the weakest part of the door with only a few tiny screws.

Anderson said, "Necessity is the mother of invention." He began to work to develop a device that would be simple and inexpensive, yet strong enough to protect a home from invaders. He knew the strongest part of a chain is determined by its weakest link. This  would eliminate attaching anything to the door facing. He instead began working on a device that could be attached to the strongest part of a house, its foundation.

Nation Hits The Scales For American Cancer Society "Great American Weigh In"

On March 3, Americans from coast to coast will hit the scales to take part in the second annual American Cancer Society Great American Weigh In.

The Great American Weigh In was established in 2003 by the American Cancer Society and founding sponsor Weight Watchers International, Inc. to promote cancer prevention by encouraging people to eat well, be active, and maintain a healthy weight. The first step - knowing your body mass index (BMI). A BMI over 25 is a health risk for many serious diseases and should prompt a personal plan of action.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 35% of cancer deaths in the U.S. annually are attributable to poor nutrition and excess body weight, and could have been prevented through a combination of healthier eating habits, regular physical activity, and weight control.

Throughout the day on Wednesday, March 3, free body mass index (BMI) screening and information on cancer prevention will be available to the public at participating Weight Watchers locations nationwide. In addition, this year the American Cancer Society Great American Weigh In will be expanded into the workplace to include many of the U.S. companies who offer Weight Watchers At Work meetings on site. During the first week of March, these participating companies will offer their employees weigh ins and provide information on how to reduce their cancer risk through healthy eating and exercise.
