Gary Jones Named Superintendent Rapides Parish Schools

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

School Superintendent Gary Jones informed members of the Claiborne Parish School Board at a special meeting on Monday, November 17 that he had been selected as the new superintendent of the Rapides Parish Schools. He said he would resign as soon as his  new contract was approved by the Rapides Parish School Board. He  would try to be here for the December board meeting but said he may have to resign before then. “I have sincerely enjoyed my nearly five years in Claiborne Parish. I feel like we’ve made some great strides,” Jones told the Board. “You have a wonderful school system and a great staff and I’ve enjoyed working with you.” He said he felt the new board deserved the opportunity to select a superintendent that had a philosophy and a vision that matched theirs—it was one of the reasons he decided to look elsewhere. Jones said we struggle sometimes and we make mistakes, but as long as you keep the kids out front, I don’t think you can go wrong. “I have always had as one guiding principle is to leave it better than I found it. I can say without a shadow of a doubt, Claiborne Parish is better than I found it—whether or not it was due to my leadership, I’ll leave that for you and the future to decide.”School Board President Joe Lee said, “I can truthfully say you left Claiborne Parish in a better position than it was when you came.” “I love Claiborne Parish and I love this school system, and I wish all of you well,” he said, "Don’t hesitate to call me if there is anything I can do.”

Local Groups Join Wade Inmates’ “Toys For Tots” Project

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

The first Tuesday of every month is a special day for a group of ladies from Homer and Haynesville who gather at the old Claiborne Electric building to spend the day stuffing their homemade dolls and teddy bears that will be placed in one of the wooden doll beds made by inmates at Forcht Wade and David Wade Correctional Center. It is part of a joint community service project initiated in 1997 by the four Claiborne Community Clubs after Jerry Thompson, then an employee at DWCC, shared information on the prison’s Toys for Tots program. Thompson told the ladies that inmates made a variety of wooden toys, including wooden doll beds, that would be distributed to needy children in the area at Christmas. He said it would be nice if they had something soft and cuddly to put in those beds, so Dora Ann Hatch asked each lady to make a doll. That first year, Kay Lowery made sixteen dolls. Since then, the ladies have been making about 400 dolls and teddy bears each year. Besides those they donate to the Wade Toys for Tots program each year, they give a large bag to the police department, sheriff’s office, school board, or to the DART office every month.

Trip To Japan Eye Opener For Haynesville Teacher

Leah Haynes is a Social Studies teacher at Haynesville High School and has been teaching in Claiborne Parish for almost eight years. This year she was selected to travel to Japan through the Fulbright Memorial Fund. It was her fourth attempt since 1997 when she first learned of the program from Principal Bob Bond while teaching at Homer Junior High. The last two years she was selected state alternate, but did not give up and this  year was one of 200 teachers selected to make the trip. Haynes said the Japanese are fully aware of the part they played in World War II and they realize they had many torturous soldiers in Okinawa and Asia. During a lecture in Peace Education, the daughter of a Japanese soldier who fought in WWII spoke on behalf of her father who was at the time too sick to travel. During her very emotional presentation, she offered a personal apology from her father for any hurt or harm he may have caused during the War.

“Spirit Of Christmas” Food Drive Gets Underway In Parish

The 22nd Annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive, sponsored by the Brookshire Grocery Company and the Homer Lions Club, began Wednesday, November 19. This annual food drive provides food for needy families in the Homer area at Christmas. Homer Lion Glenda Greer is serving as the Chairman for this year’s drive. "We have always had tremendous community response to the food drive," said Mark Brookshire, president-marketing group. "This has grown into one of the largest privately sponsored charitable efforts in the region." Area residents may make donations through Dec. 23 by placing non-perishable food items in designated bins located in participating Brookshire's Food Store. People are asked not to donate homemade goods or items in glass jars. Bulk items, such as flour, sugar and cornmeal, should be donated in smaller sizes to allow for more variety in the boxes given to the recipients. In addition to the public food donations, each family will receive at least one roasting hen from Brookshire Grocery Co. Members of participating service organizations such as Boy Scouts will sort, package and distribute the food to the families before Christmas. All food collected in the Homer area will be distributed in the Homer area. Families assisted by the Spirit of Christmas Food Drive are selected by government agencies or private relief organizations according to need. Louisiana Purchase Story To Unfold At The Ford Museum

After the United States bought the Louisiana territory for $15,000,000, President Thomas Jefferson selected William Charles Cole Claiborne to govern lower Louisiana. Backing this with military power was General James Wilkinson. The two commissioners arrived outside New Orleans on December 17, accompanied by five hundred U.S. Army troops, to take possession of the territory. On December 20, 1803, at the Cabildo in New Orleans, Claiborne and Wilkinson signed the transfer document with Pierre Clement Laussat, Napoleon's representative, which granted lower Louisiana officially to the United States. Three months later, in St. Louis, Missouri, France ceded the rights to upper Louisiana as well. The Purchase opened the door for western exploration, settlement and trade by the United States. President Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to head the first transcontinental expedition, called the Corps of Discovery. In May of 1804, Lewis and Clark departed from the St. Louis area with some 40 soldiers. They journeyed up the Missouri River, across the Great Divide, and westward to the Pacific Ocean. Because the borders of the Louisiana Purchase were not determined for many years, no map exists from that period that outlines the actual territory obtained in 1803. It took several years for Spain and the United States to settle their boundary disputes. In 1810 and 1819, the United States annexed parts of the Spanish territory of Florida by treaty. The two nations also ended conflict over the western frontier in 1819 by establishing the border of Texas and Louisiana at the Sabine River. The public is invited to visit America's Best Buy: The Louisiana Purchase at The H.S. Ford Museum through October 15. Museum hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday,The Museum regular hours are Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 9 AM - 4 PM, closed from 12 noon until 1 PM.
