FCA Huddles Honor Local Veterans

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

“I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free...” It was more than words in a song sung by the Homer High Honors Choir at the Veterans Day Program held Tuesday, November 11 at Homer City Hall. It was the feeling that filled the entire room as many gray-haired men were once again honored for their efforts on the battlefield during wartime to protect our freedom in this country. Student members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Huddles at Claiborne Academy and Homer High School sponsored the event and served the veterans a delicious noon meal. Colin Bailey of Claiborne Academy was the guest speaker. “This is a day of honor. We remember those who served America by fighting and dying on the field of battle,”  he said. “In communities all across our country, veterans live out the meaning of patriotism, idealism, and concern for others by filling positions of service and leadership. Each of us is a better person because of the influence of veterans.”

Jurors Approve Christmas Lights On Courthouse

- Members Of Claiborne Economic Development Board Resign

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

Myra Cottrell, Martha Peters, Ann Burton, Dale Tully and Christy Gladney addressed the Claiborne Parish Police Jury at their November 6 meeting in regard to the Christmas decorations and lighting. Burton asked, on behalf of the Christmas Festival Committee, for jurors to clarify whether or not they would be allowed to put lights back on the Courthouse. Besides the lights on the top of the Courthouse and columns, they only plan to put lights in the shrubs, garland on the stairs, the nativity scene, and the Santa Claus and reindeer. Lights will be mostly white with some red in the shrubs and on the Santa. Other items, such as cutouts, will be placed at the City Park this year. Tully said the majority of the people on the Christmas Committee do not even live in Homer, but they would like to see more Homer people get involved. This is one time we can let Homer shine and show off how beautiful our town is. Their plans also include buggy rides up North and South Main and family nights at the park. They have also asked residents on those streets to decorate their homes. Cottrell said no one will come to see Christmas lights in Homer if there are only 100 lights. On behalf of the Homer Garden Club, Christy Gladney apologized for any misunderstanding about their request not to put lights back on Courthouse columns. Their main concern was they did not want the lights to stay up all year. They are festive and beautiful in December but not in July. If it is impossible to take them down, then they don’t think they should be put up. She  said she would be willing to get members of the Garden Club to help decorate. Cottrell said Travis Tinsley was working to help develop some type of mechanism that would allow the lights to be attached to some type of wire that could

be easily put up and taken down each year. Jurors voted to allow the Committee to put the lights on the Courthouse as long as they take them down, with the exception of the roof area. Loy Weaver, President of the Claiborne Economic Development Board (CEDB), presented the Jury with his letter of resignation. Also resigning were other board members A.D. Williams, Bryant Lewis, and Jess Robertson.

Haynesville Raises Fees For Water, Sewer Taps

BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian-Journal

The Haynesville Town Council voted to increase water and sewer tap fees at their regular meeting October 14 from $100 to $300 as recommended by Superintendent Mike Dunaway. The Council also discussed what to do with approximately 13 master meters located inside and outside the town limits. Councilman H.U. "Mutt" Slaid suggested reading the master meters, then reading them again in 30 days to try to determine who is on which lines and see if they can find any leaks on the lines. After some discussion, no action was taken regarding the master meters. Councilwoman Joyce Majors asked for an update on the civil suit filed against former town clerk Marilyn Bush and former town CPA Smith Pugh & Rabinowitz. Mayor Mickey Mayfield said on the recommendation of town attorney Danny Newell and due to the ongoing litigation, they could not discuss the matter without going to executive session. There was no more discussion.

Louisiana Purchase Story To Unfold At The Ford Museum

After the United States bought the Louisiana territory for $15,000,000, President Thomas Jefferson selected William Charles Cole Claiborne to govern lower Louisiana. Backing this with military power was General James Wilkinson. The two commissioners arrived outside New Orleans on December 17, accompanied by five hundred U.S. Army troops, to take possession of the territory. On December 20, 1803, at the Cabildo in New Orleans, Claiborne and Wilkinson signed the transfer document with Pierre Clement Laussat, Napoleon's representative, which granted lower Louisiana officially to the United States. Three months later, in St. Louis, Missouri, France ceded the rights to upper Louisiana as well. The Purchase opened the door for western exploration, settlement and trade by the United States. President Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to head the first transcontinental expedition, called the Corps of Discovery. In May of 1804, Lewis and Clark departed from the St. Louis area with some 40 soldiers. They journeyed up the Missouri River, across the Great Divide, and westward to the Pacific Ocean. Because the borders of the Louisiana Purchase were not determined for many years, no map exists from that period that outlines the actual territory obtained in 1803. It took several years for Spain and the United States to settle their boundary disputes. In 1810 and 1819, the United States annexed parts of the Spanish territory of Florida by treaty. The two nations also ended conflict over the western frontier in 1819 by establishing the border of Texas and Louisiana at the Sabine River. The public is invited to visit America's Best Buy: The Louisiana Purchase at The H.S. Ford Museum through October 15. Museum hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday,The Museum regular hours are Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 9 AM - 4 PM, closed from 12 noon until 1 PM. Admission is: adults - $3.00, children - $1.00, and families - $5.00. For more information and special tour schedules please call 927-9190.
