Haynesville Fund Balances Increase More Than $100,000

- Council Holds First Reading Of Dog Ordinance

Town auditor Michael Epperson told the Haynesville Town Council the total fund balance had increased more than $100,000 over the past year, from $551,000 to $661,346. The utility fund made money, showing a net increase from $192,365 to $228,873. He said, "This year the audit was more enjoyable than last year. The reason...because it's one year away from problems we had with the previous town clerk." The books were more reconciled and easier to prove.

 

 

Lake Commission Endorses Police Jury Resolution On State Water Policy

The Claiborne Parish Watershed Commission at their December 19, 2002 meeting viewed a slide presentation `The State of Claiborne Waters' which showed that surface waters flow into three watersheds, Loggy Bayou on the west, Black Lake Bayou on the south, and Bayou D'Arbonne on the east, most of which are are headwaters. Most of the pollution is primarily downstream. Sewage treatment, agricultural and industrial pollution controls have been improved but dumping of household hazardous wastes are still a concern. The source of drinking water for the parish, the Sparta Aquifer, is being depleted faster than it can replenish.

 

. Chamber To Hold Annual Banquet Monday, January 27 At City Hall

The Homer-Claiborne Chamber of Commerce will hold its 38th annual membership banquet on Monday, January 27 beginning at 7 PM. This year’s theme is “The Louisiana Purchase 1803-2003 Bicentennial.” Guest speaker will be  much sought after humorist Clyde Ray Webber. Tickets to the banquet are $20 per person.  Mac Brakefield, Executive Director for the Chamber, reminds those who received an invitation, that the invitation is not your ticket. Robert Adley, Jerry Lott In Runoff For District 36 State Senate Seat

Robert Adley and Jerry Lott will face a February 15 runoff election for District 36 State Senate Seat vacated by Sen. Foster Campbell who took office as Public Service Commissioner January 1. Adley, a conservative Democrat who served as state representative from 1980 to 1996, received 6,564 of the 14,567 votes cast. Lott, who retired from the Webster Parish school system after 38 years, 15 as school superintendent, received 2,595 votes. District 36 includes most of Bossier Parish, all of

Webster and Bienville, and half of Claiborne.

 

Terry Willis Donates Work On Civil Rights To The King Foundation

Terry Willis of Homer worked for nearly a year to put together a CD that would reflect the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights era. He completed the CD last February and has shared his work at a number of functions over the past year. His reason for compiling the information was to specifically educate today’s youth and others who are not concerned about the Civil Rights movement. Last week, he donated his work to The King Foundation. As guest at First Ebenezer Baptist Church in Homer, he was featured on the Channel 12 news broadcast Monday, January 20—the holiday set aside to honor King’s birthday.

 

Kisatchie Jaycees Install New Officers For 2003

2003 is shaping up to be another prosperous year for the Kisatchie Jaycees. David Wade Correctional Center's Jaycee chapter recently installed a new slate of officers for this year. Members of Kisatchie's new executive board have confidence that they are up to the task. The chapter's new board, which took office on January 1st, consists of Andrew Hundley, President; Abie Meshell, Individual Development Vice-President; William White, Community Development Vice-President; Charles Deal, Management Development Vice-President; Joseph Hodges, Membership Development Vice-President; Jerry Fontineau, Secretary; and Terry Dugas, Treasurer.

The Resident Coordinator  for the Homer Housing Authority will host a seminar on Monday, January 27 at 6 PM at the main office located at 329 South 4th. The theme will be “Being Secure in

First Baptist Church In Arcadia To Host Wild Game Banquet February 1

First Baptist Church in Arcadie will host their annual Wild Game Banquet at 6 PM on Saturday, February 1 in the church gym. THe meal will be a catered fried fish dinner and door prizes will be given. Account Set Up At Regions Bank For Cancer Patient Alicia Lewis

An account has been set up at Regions Bank in Homer to help defray expenses for Alicia Lewis, who is presently undergoing chemotherapy and will soon face radiation treatments for breast cancer. Her present condition making her unable to return to work at the Claiborne Parish Detention Center.

 

Homer High Drama Club To Present “Yearbook” Thurs. February 13

The Homer High School Drama Club will present “Yearbook”, a two-act salute to young people on Thursday, February 13 at 6:30 PM on the Homer High auditorium stage. Tickets are $2 and $1 for preschool, and can be purchased from Drama Club members or from Director Denice Owens. If your school teachers, fellow students, and memories of yearbooks are important to you, you will not want to miss this event. Come and support the youth of your community. A portion of the proceeds of this play go to the Columbine High Memorial Fund.

 

Mt. Olive Christian School To Hold Special Auction February 1

Mt. Olive Christian School will hold a special auction on Saturday, February 1 at 10 AM at the Middle School property (1-1/2 miles east of Athens on Hwy. 518). The owners of the Trading Post in Ruston have donated all merchandise to the school. All the merchandise must be sold before the annual auction in April. There is something for everyone. Dollmaking Has Resumed At Church Annex Building

Local ladies began meeting again Tuesday, Jan. 7 to make dolls and teddy bears to be donated to local authorities for use as gifts for needy children in the area and throughout the state. Ladies will also be making lap robes for the elderly. Meetings are held the first Tuesday every month from 9 AM - 2 PM at the Homer Church of Christ Annex Building on West Main. (Hwy. 79). Christmas Festival Committee Needs Recipes For Cookbook

The Claiborne Parish Christmas Festival 2003 are collecting favorite recipes from people in the community to be published in a beautiful spiral bound cookbook.
