“Vision For A Better Tomorrow” In Claiborne Parish

W.
Nelson Philpot, Chairman of the Planning Committee on Economic Development,
quoted Governor Mike Foster in the introduction of the strategic plan prepared
for Claiborne Parish, “Why should we settle for mediocrity when we can be the
best place in America to live, work, and do business?” Copies of the report entitled “Vision for a
Better Tomorrow” were officially presented to members of the Claiborne Economic
Development Board and other local officials at a meeting held Thursday, May 9.
Fate Of Wooden Buildings On Square Delayed Again

Jess
Robertson and several members of the Homer Historical District Board attended the May 9 meeting of the
Claiborne Parish Police Jury to ask jurors to consider either donating the two
wooden buildings located on the southeast corner of the Courthouse Square to
the Town of Homer or to consider granting a long-term lease. Robertson said the
buildings play a significant role in whether the Town will be accepted into the
Main Street program, which could provide grant funds for the Town.
Board Moves Ahead On $8.4 Million Homer School Project

attorney Alan Offner attended the May 9 meeting of the Claiborne Parish School
Board to canvas the returns of school bond election held May 4 for the $8.4
million construction project for Homer schools. Superintendent Gary Jones said
with all the improvement projects underway in Haynesville, Homer, Athens,
Pineview, and Summerfield, Claiborne Parish will see $17 million in
improvements to the local school system.
Pineview Commencement Set For May 17
Pineview
High School commencement exercises will be Friday, May 17, 2002, beginning at 7
p.m. in the Pineview High School Gymnasium, according to Principal Felton C.
Evans.Valedictorian is Robert Bernard Evans, Jr., salutatorian is Daniela
Jeanette Polk and honor student is Shalen Lavan Heard.
Mt. Olive Christian To Graduate May 17
Mt.
Olive Christian School commencement exercises will be at 7 p.m. on Friday May
17, 2002 in the school gymnasium. Valedictorian is Jennifer Lynn Atkins and
salutatorian is Crystal Faith Gantt.
Summerfield Graduation Set May 20
Graduation
for Summerfield High School will be at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 2002 in the
school gymnasium. Valedictorian is Lindsey Marie Gray and salutatorian is Jamie
Michelle Kendrick.
Homer High School Commencement Tuesday, May 21
Graduation
at Homer High School will be Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at the Ronny G. Beard
Memorial Stadium at 7:30 o'clock p.m. Valedictorian is Laura Elizabeth Barrington, daughter of Mike and Mary
Barrington. Salutatorian is Kemmerly Elizabeth Walker, daughter of Guy and
Margie Walker. Honor student is Jason Dennis Martin, son of Terry and Michelle
Martin.

Scout Troop72 Will Pick Up Clothes Saturday, May 18

past Saturday, members of Boy Scout Troop 72 distributed bags for the purpose
of collecting clothing for Clothes, Etc. There is a misprint on the bags which
state a pickup date of May 11, 2002. Bags will actually be picked up this
Saturday, May 18. If you did not receive a bag and would like to make a

Homer Lions Club will hold their 15th Annual Chicken Charbroil on Saturday, May
18 at the First Guaranty Bank in the McLemore Shopping Center, next to
Brookshire’s, from 10 AM-1 PM. Plates include 1/2 chicken, beans, chips, roll
and brownie. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased from any member of the Lions

Hearing Set June 3 For Town Of Homer Budget
A
public hearing on the proposed budget for fiscal year July 1, 2002 to June 30,
2003 for the Town of Homer is scheduled for June 3, 1001 at 6 PM in the Mayor’s
Chambers. A copy of the proposed budget will be available for public
inspection.
Adult
Education Center At NW Tech Campus To Close For Break
The
Claiborne Parish Adult Education Center, located on the Northwest Louisiana
Technical College campus in Homer, will be closed for the summer break May 29
through June 30. Testing for new students will be Monday, July 1 at 8 AM.
Anyone wishing to enroll may contact the center at 927-5302. The center
provides free instruction to anyone 17 years of age or older who is interested
in obtaining a GED or wishes to improve his/her reading, writing, or math
skills.

High Classes 1974-1978 To Hold Class Reunion In August
Homer
High School Classes ‘74 through ’78 will hold their Class Reunion August 16-18,
2002. The next monthly meeting will be Sunday, May 19 at 6 PM at Homer City
Hall. Plans will be finalized to begin sending letters to classmates. Anyone
who attended Homer High School with these classes are asked to attend. The
Committee wants your ideas, suggestions, and opinions so everyone will be
