Wade Inmate Dies After Attempt To Escape

An inmate serving life at David Correctional Center died Sunday, July 28 about 11:45 AM from apparent self-inflicted wounds following an attack on corrections officer, Sgt. Dayton Finley and an attempt to escape. Allen Laborde, 43, of Mansura in Avoyelles Parish, was serving a life sentence for the brutal, first degree murder in 1979 of 17-year-old LaDell Slocum, an honor student at Marksville High School.

 

Storm Topples Trees, Damages Miss Lizzie’s Gift Shop

A fast-moving storm traveled through Homer Wednesday afternoon, July 24, toppling a number of trees and doing extensive damage to Miss Lizzie’s Gift Shop on South 3rd Street. Trees were lying across the road on several residential streets. Limbs and debris covered streets and yards all over town. According to Dennis Butcher with the local Office of Emergency Preparedness, the National Weather Service reported straight line winds over Homer up to 70 mph.

 

Homer Memorial Hospital Changes Payment Policy, Prepares For Bioterrorism

The Board of Directors for the Homer Memorial Hospital met Tuesday, July 23. Hospital Administrator James McClung announced he had signed the cooperative endeavor agreement with the State of Louisiana and had received three Dell computers and a printer. According to DHH Secretary David W. Hood, the computers were provided to 43 small rural hospitals in the state, as well as hospitals in large, metropolitan communities through a partnership between the Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health and the Rural Hospital Coalition.

Trailblazer Announces “Paper For Trees” Recycling Program

Trailblazer Rural Development Institute is announcing their annual “Paper for Trees” Recycling Program. For a limited time during the month of August, a $5 gift certificate will be exchanged for three grocery bags of newspaper (about 30 pounds for recycling). Fifty certificates are available for distribution in each parish and are limited to one per family. The gift certificates will be honored toward the purchase of tree seedlings at the Trailblazer Tree Initiative during February of 2003. The “Paper for Trees” program is designed to give citizens in north central Louisiana a practical means to reduce landfill consumption by recycling their newspapers. It is also an opportunity for Trailblazer to thank those volunteers who have consistently participated in the recycling program. Parishes participating in the program are Bienville, Claiborne, Jackson, Lincoln, Union, Webster, and Winn.

Meeting Set To Discuss Corney Lake Drawdown, Restocking

Summerfield High School will host a public meeting on Monday, August 5 at 6:30 PM for the U.S. Forest Service pertaining to the restocking and concerns about the drawdown at Corney Lake.

 

Lake Claiborne State Park To Hold Nature Day Camp Aug. 8

Lake Claiborne State Park will hold a Nature Day Camp for anyone in fifth grade and up on Thursday, August 8 from 8:30 AM - 5 PM. Cost is $10 per participant and will include a campfire lunch and snack and all gear needed for camping, fishing, insect collecting, etc. Bring suitable gear for hiking, canteen, bathing suit & towel. Optional-insect repellent, sunscreen, snacks, rubber boots. Program includes fishing clinic, trail hike, camping out, pre-forestry and first-aid, canoe lessons, and swimming. Pre-registration is required. Limit 12 participants.

United Blood Services will hold blood drives in Homer August 9 at Wal-Mart from 8:30-11:30 AM and Homer Memorial Hospital from 1:30-4:30 PM. UBS provides to Homer Memorial and provided over 400 units last year, yet drew only 4 units during blood drives. Please help your community by donating blood Friday, August 9. The Homer-Mayfield School Reunion is set for Thursday, August 1 through Sunday, August 4. Individual classes on August 1. Friday, August 2--Registration at Lane Chapel CME Church 9 AM-3 PM, Business Meeting 3:00-4:30 PM and Banquet at 7:30 PM at Homer City Hall. Saturday, August 3--Picnic Lunch at noon at Lake Claiborne State Park and a Concert featuring “The Mosley & Johnson Band” and Miss Shawanna Schumpert at 9 PM at Mayfield Park (or Homer City Hall if bad weather). CPSO, DWCC To Sponsor August Hunter Safety Courses

The Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office along with David Wade Correctional Center will sponsor two Hunter’s Safety Courses in August. The 3-day courses will be held at the Homer Fire Station. The first course will be held August 1-3 and the second  August 8-10. Classes will be held 6:00-9:30 PM on Thursday and Friday and 8:00-11:00 AM on Saturday. Pre-registration required.  Call 927-2011
