Jury Considers Tightening Trespass, Hunting Laws

- BellSouth Gives 2 Options For Expanding Local Calling Area In Parish

Claiborne Parish resident Mark Wiginton presented a Landowner’s Resolution for consideration by the Claiborne Parish Police Jury at their meeting Wednesday, July 17. The proposed Resolution would require a person to obtain "written permission signed by the landowner" before crossing another's property and would make it "unlawful for a person, firm, hunting club, or corporation to assume a stationary hunting position or place a permanent or mobile hunting stand...for purposes of the shooting or hunting deer, turkey or any other resident game birds or animals any closer than fifty (50) yards to the boundary of adjoining property or any closer than five hundred (500) feet to any residence or inhabited dwelling." Wiginton presented a petition with 201 signatures. He said, “We need to do something about strengthening our laws to protect the landowners."

Two Arrested For Armed Robbery Of Haynesville Councilman

Two suspects have been arrested and charged with the armed robbery of Haynesville Town Councilman H.U. “Mutt” Slaid. Slaid was robbed on Friday, July 12 in his front yard. Just prior to the robbery, while working in his yard, he was approached by two black males asking for work.They left. A while later Slaid sat down to rest and was approached from behind. A gun was placed at the back of his head and he was told to turn over all his money.

 

Sheriff’s Search And Rescue Unit Searches For Missing Man On Lake

Jeff Pugh, with the Claiborne Parish Search and Rescue Unit, assisted by Sheriff Deputy Randy Pugh responded to a call about 3 AM Sunday, July 21 on Lake Claiborne. Several individuals riding on a barge to Snake Island, about 300 yards from Kings Point, reported Chris Smith, 30, of Arcadia had decided to swim to shore. He had hollered to let them know he made it, but when they motored the barge to shore they could not find him. After searching about an hour, they were afraid he may have attempted to swim back to the Island and drowned, so they notified the Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office.

 

Court Holds Banks Responsible For Losing Customer’s CD

- Mrs. Billie Crump Receives $30,344.38 From First Guaranty, Bank One

The Second Circuit Court of Appeals in Shreveport recently upheld a lower court ruling that ordered First Guaranty Bank and Bank One Corporation to pay Mrs. Billie J. Crump and husband, Freddie, of Haynesville the money owed on the $17,000 certificate of deposit she placed in Homer National Bank in 1994. The day the appellate decision was released for publication, both banks settled the lawsuit, paying Mrs. Crump a total of $30,344.38, which represents the original amount of the CD, plus judicial interest and attorney's fees. The Crumps received $17,208.07 from First Guaranty and $13,136.31 from Bank One.

 

Reward Offered For Information On Claiborne Drug Robbery

The Homer Police Department is currently investigating a break in at Claiborne Drug on the morning of Monday, July 15. Homer Police Chief Rodney Hollenshead said entrance was gained through the rear of the building. The break-in was discovered by relief pharmacist Debby Dendy as she arrived to open the store. A large quantity of controlled drugs including Oxycontin, Lortab, Lorcet, Tussionex, and several different types of anxiety medication were taken.

 

Tax Renewal Passes In Haynesville

-New Absentee Voting Machines In Place By Fall

Haynesville residents went to the polls Saturday, July 20 and voted in favor of renewing the 10-year tax used for maintenance and operation of the town’s streets and sewerage system. Of the 100 people who voted, 77 voted in favor of the tax renewal and 23 voted against.

 

Former Claiborne Resident Indicted On Child Molestation Charges

Russell Carter Smith, 78, of Spearsville was indicted by a Claiborne Parish Grand Jury on Wednesday, July 10 on 30 counts of child molestation charges stemming from incidents that occurred in Claiborne Parish prior to 1997. At that time a Grand Jury failed to indict Smith due to lack of evidence Sometime later, he moved to Spearsville. In March of this year, Smith pled guilty to three counts of child molestation in Union Parish in 1998, where he admitted to luring girls to his truck by offering them a lollipop, then fondling them. He also admitted under oath to previous accusations in Claiborne Parish.

Pelican Football Season Tickets will go on sale August 5. Previous ticket holders of season tickets, parking passes, or box seats will be given the opportunity to renew, then those not renewed will be offered on a first come, first serve basis. Ticket prices are as follows:same as last year: $5 - general admission, $20 - season tickets (5 home games), $25 - lower box seats and sky boxes., and $15 - parking passes. Parish Library To Hold Ending Programs July 24 And 25

All children, all ages, who have finished requirements for the “Silly Chilly Summer” reading program at the Claiborne Parish Library are invited to attend the closing program Wed, July 24 at 10 AM in Haynesville and Thurs., July 25 at 2 PM in Homer. Certificates and prizes will be awarded.

Football Physicals Set July 30 For Homer High And Jr. High

Football physicals will be held for Homer High School and Homer Junior High School at 3 PM on Tuesday, July 30 at the Homer High School Fieldhouse. Homer High School football practice will begin at 6 PM on Thursday, August 1 with heat acclamation drills.

Haynesville, Homer, Athens Collecting Newspapers For Trailblazer

The Town of Haynesville, the Town of Homer and the Village of Athens have joined Trailblazer in their newspaper recycling efforts. Newspaper recycling bins are located at Haynesville Town Hall,  Homer City Hall and R & S Hardware in Athens.

 

CPSO,  DWCC To Sponsor August Hunter Safety Courses

The Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office along with David Wade Correctional Center will sponsor two Hunter’s Safety Courses in August. The 3-day courses will be held at the Homer Fire Station. The first course will be held August 1-3 and the second  August 8-10. Classes will be held 6:00-9:30 PM on Thursday and Friday and 8:00-11:00 AM on Saturday. Pre-registration is required. Homer-Mayfield School Reunion Set For August 1-4, 2002

The Homer-Mayfield School Reunion will be Thursday, August 1 through Sunday, August 4. Individual classes will get together on August 1. Registration will be held at Lane Chapel CME Church 9 AM-3 PM Friday, August 2. On Friday, the Business Meeting will be 3:00-4:30 PM followed by a Banquet at 7:30 PM at Homer City Hall. On Saturday, August 3 a Picnic Lunch at 12:00 noon at Lake Claiborne State Park and a Concert at 9 PM at Mayfield Park, or at Homer City Hall if bad weather. Worship services will be Sunday, August 4 at 3 PM at Homer High School auditorium. Registration is $100 per adult and $20 per child under 17. Tickets in registration packet must be presented at banquet and picnic. Concert tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at gate.

 

Pineview High Multi-Class Reunion Set For Saturday, July 27

The Pineview High School Multi-Class Reunion will be held Saturday, July 27. Graduating classes from 1979-1985 are encouraged to attend and enjoy a day of fun and getting reacquainted. The Homer High Classes of 1974 through 1978 will hold their Class Reunion August 16-18.
