Ludlow Celebrates “Fifty Years Of Progress”
Homer Plant No Longer For Sale
By Susan T. Herring, Editor, The Guardian-Journal
Ludlow Coated Products celebrates their fiftieth anniversary on May 22, 2002. It was on May 22, 1952 when McLaurin-Jones held their “grand” opening for the new Homer plant beginning with a noon luncheon and entertainment provided by the Homer High School band. The ceremony with speeches and ribbon cutting began at 3 PM in a large tent outside the mill. John MacLaurin, who had turned the first shovel of dirt in January 1952, cut the ribbon across the door to the plant. Following an open house of the mill, a barbecue was held at 6 PM with 400 attending. A dance was held in the American Legion Hall at 9 PM with an excellent orchestra from Shreveport. Thus began the “fifty years of progress.” Employees at Ludlow today are celebrating the announcement on April 25, 2002 that Tyco is no longer looking for a buyer for the Homer plant. Tyco International had announced last January that Ludlow Coated Products and the rest of the Plastics and Adhesives division was for sale. “Tyco terminated its plan to break into four independent, public companies,” said Dennis Koslowski, CEO of Tyco. “We will keep our great portfolio of businesses intact, including Plastics and Adhesives. Tyco Plastics and Adhesives is a market leader with significant earnings and cash flow that can be reinvested in our businesses. Therefore, once we decided to discontinue the separation plan, it no longer made sense to sell this business.”

Duane Rhea Honored For Service In New Guinea During World War II
By Susan T. Herring, Editor, The Guardian-Journal
“To the noblest of them all, our comrades who fell in battle, lost to the world, but retained in the hearts of men--to those who found their greatest glory in defence of their country--this volume is gratefully dedicated.”...This dedication can be found on the first page of the book “The Reaper’s Harvest” beside a picture of the Flag of the United States of America flying at half mast. On the opposite page are pictures of four Generals followed by the 3rd Group Commanding Officers. It was these who commandeered the Grim Reapers to their destination in the Southwest Pacific Campaign during World War II. They fought off the Japanese who were successfully over-running the Pacific and threatening to invade the Australian mainland. Their particular destination was the strategic base of Port Moresby.
