Homer School Plan Given Go Ahead At Public Meeting
BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian‑Journal
A public meeting held Tuesday, April 9 to discuss plans
for the Homer school bond issue was well attended. This was the fourth in a
series of meetings held to discuss the
potential benefit to the community, the advantage for students, the cost
of the project, and the plans for existing junior high buildings. The first
meeting held May 17, 2001 at Homer High addressed what options were available.
Steps were then taken to formulate a plan. On July 26, 2001 a preliminary draft
of the plan was presented to the business community at a luncheon at the Homer
High cafeteria. More recently, Superintendent Gary Jones explained the proposed
plan to the faculty of all Homer schools.
Child With Rare Blood Disease To Celebrate 1st
Birthday
‑ Blood
Drives Held Throughout Month For Coleson Shaw
BY SUSAN T. HERRING, Editor, The Guardian‑Journal
Coleson Shaw will celebrate his first
birthday on Sunday, April 21. For most children, this is a normal happy event,
however, for Coleson it is a miracle. Coleson is the son of Alan and Yvette
Shaw of Minden. He was born with a rare blood disease called Diamond Blackfan
Anemia (DBA). It took doctors two months to diagnose the disease even though he
was rushed to Schumpert for a transfusion shortly after his birth. At the time,
they thought the lack of blood in his body was due to complications at birth.
It was at his 2 month checkup when his blood level was critically low, at the
point of cardiac arrest, doctors realized something was wrong.
Replenishment Blood Drives will be held at
