The Ordinance to remove term limits was the top item on the January 8 agenda of the Homer Town Council. Mayor David Aubrey allowed each councilman an opportunity to comment before voting. Scott "Doc" Roberson and Joe Merritt stated they still supported removing the term limits. Jess Robertson said the term limits served a purpose. They eliminated burn out and allowed others an opportunity to serve. "After eight years, there are a lot of other ways you could serve the town." |
Marilyn Bush Pleads Not Guilty

Marilyn Bush, former Haynesville town clerk, pled not guilty to charges of stealing $188,035 at her arraignment Tuesday, January 2. Bush, who was scheduled to retire as town clerk October 31, 1999, was placed on administrative leave with pay by the Haynesville Town Council at a special called meeting, before being arrested on November 17 by the Louisiana State Police, and charged with theft and malfeasance in office. |
Water A Hot News Topic In Latter Half Of 2000

Water was the number one story the second half of the year 2000, from the lack of rainfall creating the worst drought in years to ice storms and snow, to the decreasing level of the Sparta Aquifer--the source of drinking water for much of North Louisiana and South Arkansas, to raising water rates and taxes on water. |
NRC Reversed Environmental Racism Decision On LES Plant

In the December 21 issue of The Guardian-Journal, which featured an article about the "Visionaries" film crew who were in Homer in November gathering information for a PBS documentary which will feature the Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund and attorney Nathalie Walker, the article failed to state that on April 3, 1998, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission reversed in part, and affirmed in part the decision of the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board. |

Two Tractor Trailers Collide, Killing One
Two tractor trailers collided about 12:46 PM Tuesday, January 9, on Hwy. 79 in front of the Presbyterian Village, causing the diesel saddle bags (fuel tanks) to explode, killing one driver and injuring another. Herbert Robert Ross, 55, of Blanchard, was killed instantly as he attempted to back his 1998 Volvo truck owned by SAIA Motor Freight of Houma, LA, into the parking lot at Presbyterian Village to make a delivery. Tracy Lee Gilbert, 28, of Valley Springs, AR, was headed north in a truck owned by B&N Contractors of Haynesville, pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with a Caterpillar bulldozer. Gilbert was passing in a no passing zone when he collided with the left driver's side of the SAIA truck cab. He was transported to Willis-Knighton in Homer with moderate injuries. Louisiana State Trooper Chris Johnson said both drivers were at fault in the accident. Traffic was rerouted for several hours and the road had not reopened at 5 PM following the accident. |

Louisiana Small Town Program To Present Report On Homer Today
Local residents are encouraged to attend the Louisiana Small Town Program meeting today, January 11, at 6 PM at Homer City Hall. Members of the resource team will present the findings from their 4-day visit in October, 2000. The top issues identified in October were education, tourism, economic development, and drugs. Linda Imes, Executive Director of the Governor's Office of Community Programs, and Leslie Tassin, the Claiborne Parish field coordinator, will be at the meeting to offer suggestions for the town's consideration. Don't miss this very important meeting. |

Homer Chamber Of Commerce To Hold Annual Membership Banquet
The Homer Chamber of Commerce announces the 36th annual Membership Banquet will be held on Monday, January 29, 2001 at the Homer City Hall. Rebecca McDaniel, chairman, said the theme this year is "Mardi Gras Madness--2001." Judge Harmon Drew will be the guest speaker and entertainer. The evening is expected to be filled with lots of fun, great food, and will again feature the wonderful sound of music from the band "The House Next Door." - Homer Council, Police Jury, School Board To Meet
- The Homer Town Council will meet Monday, January 8 at 6 PM. The Claiborne Parish Police Jury will meet at 10 AM Wednesday, January 10 and 11 in their board room. The Claiborne Parish School Board will meet at 7 PM Thursday, January 11, following their work session at 6 PM.
- Fact Sheets Available On Seasonal Depression
- Although this is a happy time of year, it is the most common time of year for SAD (Seasonal Affect Disorder). A fact sheet about seasonal depression is currently available at the Homer Memorial Hospital switchboard at 927-2024 and at the Homer Senior Care facility in Haynesville. Call 624-3665 for more info.
- Childbirth Classes Offered At Homer Memorial Hospital
- Homer Memorial Hospital will hold childbirth classes beginning February 13. Classes are free and are available to anyone wishing to attend, regardless of where they plan to deliver. To register, call 92702924 and ask for the OB nurse on duty.
- Flu Shots Are Now Available At Parish Health Unit
- Flu shots are now available at the Claiborne Parish Health Unit at 624 West Main pm Fridays from 8 AM to 3 PM for high-risk individuals and for those over 65 years of age. High risk are adults and children with chronic cardiovascular or pulmonary system disorders that required medical follow-up or hospitalization last year. Those without a Medicare or Medicaid card will pay a $10 fee. For more information, call 927-6127.
- Grief Support Group Meets 1st And 3rd Mondays
- The Grief Support Group meets 1st and 3rd Mondays at 6 PM at the Homer Memorial Hospital Conference Room. The Group is open to anyone experiencing grief over a recent or past loss. For more info, call Toni Camp at 371-1140.
- Homer High Football Banquet Set For Monday, January 22
- The Homer High School football banquet will be held Monday, January 22 beginning at 7 PM at Homer City Hall. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased from any Pelican Quarterback Club member.
- Homer Lion's Club Selling Pecans For Charity

- Relay For Life Committee To Meet January 16 At 5 PM
- $24.2 million dollars was raised by volunteers for the American Cancer Society's Mid-South Division in 2000. The next team captains meeting is January 16 at 5 PM at the Homer Memorial Hospital Conference Room. All interested groups are encouraged to attend. The 2001 Relay For Life is set for Friday, April 6 beginning at 6 PM through 6 AM on Saturday, April 7.
- Cub Scouts To Collect Food For Annual Food Drive
- Saturday morning, January 13 is day local cub scouts will be putting out bags for their annual Cub Scout Food Drive in order to replenish the local Food Bank. If you do get a bag, call Wayne Hatfield at 927-2961, or contact one of your local cub scouts. Boy scouts will pick up filled bags on Saturday, January 20. Have your bags out by 8:30 AM. Bags can be also be dropped off at the First Presbyterian Church.
- "Tobacco In the Body" To Be Topic At Regional Health Center
- The W-K Regional Health Center will host a public education program on Tuesday, January 16. Laverne Carley, Education Assistant, will discuss "Tobacco in the Body" in the conference room at 11 AM.

- South Claiborne Water System To Hold Meeting January 15
- The South Claiborne Water System will hold a member and a Board of Directors meeting on Monday, January 15 at 6:30 PM at the Cross Roads Community Center in Athens. All members are invited to attend.
- North Louisiana Cancer Institute To Offer Free Pap Smear
- The Northeast Louisiana Cancer Institute will offer "free" pap smears on Saturday, January 13 from 8 AM to 12 noon at two locations -- 411 Calypso Street in Monroe, and 503 McMillan Road in West Monroe. Every woman who is 18 or older, or is sexually active, should get regular Pap tests and pelvic exams. Women over 65 should continue to have Pap tests at least every 3 years. Claiborne Parish women can call 1-800-393-2029 to schedule a free pap smear and pelvic exam.

- The Mayor's Office and the Business Office of the Town of Homer will be closed Monday, January 15 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Day, and will reopen Tuesday, January 16 at 8 PM.
- Haynesville Elementary Kicks Off PepsiNotes Program
- Haynesville Elementary, in conjunction with the Pepsi Cola Company, will begin collect PepsiNotes through February 1, 2001. The Pepsi Cola Company has initiated the "Share the Joy With Music" promotion in which music note symbols will be placed on specially marked packages of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, One, Frito-Lay, Funyuns, and Rold Golds, These PepsiNotes can be used by the school to redeem free music supplies. One of the goals of Haynesville Elementary is supply music stands for the school recorder band. Drop-off locations are all classrooms at Haynesville Elementary and many cooperating businesses and civic buildings throughout Claiborne Parish. - Smoke Detectors For The Elderly Offered through TRIAD
- TRIAD of Claiborne wants all seniors age 65 and above, to have a smoke detector. You may also qualify if you're disabled. Having a smoke detector can mean the difference of life or death. - Homer Memorial Hospital is proud to announce the availability of MRI procedures two days a week in Homer.
The JCAHO-accredited system, provided by Alliance Imaging, is a Siemens 1.0 with a fast pack. The moblie MRI produces images as good as an on-site MRI. MRI procedures performed in Homer by Alliance Imaging specialists are read by radiologists from Diagnostic Associates; films become part of the patients permanent record and stay on-site at HMH. Appointments should be made through your physician; the ordering physician does not have to be a local physician. "We are proud to offer this service to our community.
