Disaster Relief Team Spends Week At “Ground Zero”

Ronald Day and John Bailey of Homer returned home this week after spending a week at “Ground Zero” in New York City. They were part of the Rolling Hills Ministries Disaster Relief Team who left from Emmanuel Baptist Church in Ruston on November 9. They traveled 1500 miles, crossing eleven states, and arrived in New York Saturday evening.

School Performance Scores Show Teachers Are Doing Good Job

Claiborne Parish School Superintendent Gary Jones said teachers are doing a super job and he doesn’t want them to be too disappointed about the School Performance Scores (SPS) recently released by the state. Although Claiborne Parish schools were ranked below the state average, schools are showing improvement and, he said, “We are positioned for success”. Although Summerfield was the only school in the parish to exceed their growth target, Jones said, "Homer Elementary was the success story of the district."

Voters Overwhelmingly Approve School Tax Renewal

Unofficial results show voters in Claiborne Parish overwhelmingly approved the renewal of the Claiborne Parish School Board tax held Saturday, November 17. With the school tax the only issue on the ballot, 1,517 of a possible 9.772 registered voters, or about 15 percent, showed up at the polls. Of those, 1,370 (90.3 percent) voted in favor of the tax renewal and 147 (9.69 percent) voted against.

A fresh crop of Bergeron pecans arrived at the Homer Police Station this week for the annual Homer Lions Club promotion. Bags are 12 oz. and sell for $6. Money Available for New or Expanding Businesses in Homer -
The Homer Chamber of Commerce now has monies to lend through the Revolving Loan Program. Anyone who is interested in starting a business or enlarging an existing business within an eight mile radius of Homer may be eligible.
These funds were received from the USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program to assist small businesses and provide for jobs in Homer. Loan preferences will be made on the basis of job creation. Smithsonian WW II Traveling Exhibit To Be On Display At Museum Till Nov. 21 -
The Smithsonian WW II Traveling Exhibit Produce for Victory: Posters on the American Home Front, 1941-1945 will be on display at the Ford Museum until Wednesday, November 21. A host of special programming has been held at the museum in connection with the exhibit. Interesting exhibits concerning the Claiborne Parish Home Front and the soldiers of Claiborne Parish have been added to the exhibit to help explain the role Claiborne Parish played during this time. This was a time in American history when the nation was united in a single goal--VICTORY! The men, women and children in Claiborne Parish did whatever necessary to bring about that end. The display at the left features photos of local WW II veterans. Visitors are invited to the musuem to see this very special exhibit. Some parish schools have brought students to musuem to see the exhibit. Linda Volentine would like to encourage other schools to take advantage of this unique opportunity. Museum hours are 9 AM-12 Noon and 1:30-4 PM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 2-4 PM on Sunday. Special times can be set up. Admission rates are $3 for Adults, $1 for Children, and $5 for Family.
