Sparta Commission To Wait On Study
The Sparta Commission Groundwater Commission decided to wait until study was complete before taking any action to ask the state to declare the Sparta Aquifer as critical. Two local commissioners who attended the meeting in Ruston on Thursday, August 30 were T.E. "Gene" Coleman and James Robert Michael. Coleman and Michael agreed it was better to wait until the study was complete and the commission had factual information before declaring the Sparta critical or requesting a moratorium on new industry. Jack Beard said he's been hearing the same rhetoric for almost 25 years--talking about what we are going to do about the future of the area's water supply. He said, "Finally, we are doing something about it. Thank God," said Beard. He said he didn't think he would live long enough to see something done.
