Claiborne Residents Respond

“Oh, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light...What so proudly we hailed, by the twilight’s last gleaming....” These words, our national anthem, are heard across America prior to sporting events, but this past week they took on a different meaning to most younger Americans. For the first time, our youngest generation gained a new appreciation of what “Old Glory” stands for. This past week they saw a wave of patriotism spread across this land not seen in almost sixty years.

 

School Board Pledges Support For President Bush

In response to the thousands of deaths and injuries resulting from the September 11, 2001 act of terrorism on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the Claiborne Parish School Board voted unanimously to approve a resolution pledging support for President George W. Bush, the nation's military and government officials, and the citizens of the United States in this time of sorrow and national need. The resolution expressed confidence in our President, Congress, and the military of this great nation to take appropriate actions to safeguard our liberty and exact punishment on those who have committed this act of war.

 

Doyree Sturges Shot In Haynesville, Terry Cheatham Arrested 
The Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting incident in Haynesville. According to Detective Ben Booth, about 1:33 PM on Monday, September 17, an E-911 call came in to the office reporting a shooting behind the branch bank of Hibernia National Bank. The Haynesville Police Department and an AMR ambulance responded immediately and found Doyree Sturges, 66, of Haynesville with a gunshot wound to the right arm and chest area. Upon further investigation, the Sheriff’s Office arrested Terry Cheatham, also of Haynesville and charged him with attempted first degree murder.

 

Beverly Smith To Speak To Lions Club About Claiborne Parish Home Front 
"The Claiborne Parish Home Front, 1941-1945" will be the program topic for the September 27 meeting of the Homer Lions Club. Beverly Smith, Vice President of the Ford Museum, will speak on the contributions of Claiborne Parish's stay-at-home citizens toward achieving Allied Victory in 1945.

 

The Clean City Committee was organized from the Homer Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Town of Homer. The objective was to pick up trash on Highway 79 going through Homer, to work with the Town getting dilapidated houses renovated, repaired or demolished; to work with the Town to get unlicensed cars removed, and to get lots cleaned up and the accumulation of trash removed. The Committee tries to hold a “Trash Bash” every month at the old Coca-Cola plant on East 3rd. The next “Trash Bash” is planned for Saturday, September 29. The operational income of the CCC is obtained through the sale of garbage bags and through voluntary donations. On Friday, October 12, they will hold a benefit barbecue at noon at Homer City Hall.   • Athens High School To Hold Open House Thursday, Sept. 20 - Athens High School will host an Open House on September 20 from 6:00-8:00 PM tonight, Thursday, September 20. All parents are encouraged to attend. At 6 PM refreshments will be served, followed by a short assembly with classroom visitations afterwards. This is a time to meet your child's teachers and to see improvements to the school If a conference is needed, it will be scheduled for a later time. 
     
  • “Firehouse Jammers” Have Moved To Claiborne Electric - The “Firehouse Jammers” have outgrown the Homer Fire Station. They are now meeting at Claiborne Electric on Hwy. 146 All are welcome to bring their instrument and join in “picking and singing,” or just sit back and enjoy the music, the coffee and refreshments, every Friday night from 7 PM till.   • Junction City Parent-Teacher Conference Rescheduled - Due to a scheduling conflict, the Junction City High School Parent-Teacher Conference set for September 27 has been rescheduled. It will be held on Tuesday, October 2 from 3:00 - 9:00 p.m. 
     
  • “The Big Cheese” Set At Lake Claiborne State Park September 22 - Visitors are invited to a presentation about the myths, folklore, and facts on the moon entitled “The Big Cheese” at 7 PM on Saturday, September 22 at Lake Claiborne State Park. For more info, call 927-2976. 
     
  • Corney Creek Pageant Set For Saturday, September 29 - The 2001 Corney Creek Pageant will be held at the Bernice High School Auditorium on September 29 beginning at 6 PM. 
     
  • Absentee Voting For October 20 Election Will Be October 8-13 - Absentee voting for the October 20 election for District 9 Police Juror and for the Claiborne Parish Recreation District Ward 2 & 3 proposition in Haynesville will be held Monday, October 8, through Saturday, October 13. The office of the Registrar of Voters at 518 East Main will be open from 8:30 AM-4:30 PM Monday-Friday and from 8:30 AM-noon on Saturday.   • Claiborne Parish Fair Comes To Haynesville September 23 - This year's fair will include school and club Claiborne Parish Fairbooths, art displays, general exhibits, poultry entries, livestock and don't forget the Carnival. Come enjoy the fun! 
     
  • New Cabins At Lake Claiborne State Park Are Open - Ten new vacation cabins opened at Lake Claiborne State Park on January 9.     • Sept 8 - The Use of White Tailed Deer by Native Americans - Visitors are invited to a presentation on the many uses Native Americans found for deer hunted and harvested for subsistence. Their bones, tendons, antlers and hide, as well as venison for food, were all used.
    • Sept 15 - Woodpecker Wonders, 7 pm - This special nature program will present facts about the woodpeckers found in Louisiana. Learn about their food preferences and how to attract them.
    • Sept 22 - The Big Cheese, 7 pm - Visitors are invited to a presentation about the myths, folklore and facts about the moon.
    • Sept 28 - A Trees Life, 9:30 am - Join the park naturalist for a nature hike to examine the different tree species found in the park. A discussion of the germination process, growth and life cycle of trees will follow.
     
     
  • Ford Museum Needs Photos From WWII Home Front - The Herbert S. Ford Museum is searching for photos taken on the Home Front during World War II of the activities that occurred in Claiborne Parish--scrap metal drives, war bond sales, Red Cross gatherings, etc. Photos of our WWII veterans are also needed for display for the upcoming Produce for Victory: Posters on the American Home Front, 1941-1945 exhibit from the LEH and Smithsonian Institute.   • American Legion & Auxiliary To Meet Sunday At Tall Timbers - The American Legion Post 73 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 73 will meet at Tall Timbers on Sunday, September 23 with representatives who attended Girls State and Boys State. All members are urged to attend. 
     
  • Boy Scouts To Hold Community Coat Drive For Eagle Project - Boy Scouts Troop 72, sponsored by First Baptist Church and in conjunction with Community Services, Claiborne Cleaners, and Al-N-Way Cleaners, will host a community coat drive through the month of September. Drop off points are Wal-Mart, Regions Bank, Hibernia Bank, and First Baptist Church, or persons can call for pick up. Coats will be cleaned and distributed to needy families in the local area.   • Donated Items Sought For Doll Making In Homer! - Items are needed to make dolls and other gifts for Christmas--fabrics, lace, tape, ribbon, thread, sweat pants, sweat shirts, etc. Ladies meet the first Tuesday of each month at the Homer Church of Christ Annex Building on West Main to make dolls, lap robes, doll quilts, pillows, etc. Volunteers are welcome.   • Junction City Sets Public Hearing On LCDBG Fund - The Village of Lisbon will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, September 25 at 11 AM at the Town Hall to discuss the amount of funds and range of activities available for proposed community development and housing activities for persons of low and moderate income for 2002-2003 Louisiana Community funds. 
     
  • Homer Memorial Hospital To Hold Childbirth Preparation Classes - Homer Memorial Hospital will be offering Childbirth Preparation Classes beginning October 15. These classes are free and are open to anyone wishing to attend, regardless of where they plan to deliver. Community Development Block Grant (LCDBG) funds for 2002-2003 . 
     
  • Louisiana Chicken Festival Beauty Pageant Set For September 22 - The Third Annual Louisiana Chicken Festival Beauty Pageant will be held at 7 PM September 22 in Dubach. 
     
  • Claiborne Council On Aging Events - Bingo is played every Friday after Lunch. Lunches are served daily Monday thru Friday. Exercise treadmills and rowing machines are available. Slip and molds are available for ceramics. 
     
  • Smoke Detectors For The Elderly Offered through TRIAD - TRIAD of Claiborne wants all seniors age 65 and above, to have a smoke detector. You may also qualify if you're disabled. Having a smoke detector can mean the difference of life or death. Smoke detectors are available without charge. If you don't have a smoke detector, call 927-2011.
