Parish Could Benefit From Promotion Of La. 2 Scenic Byway

A public forum was held Thursday, August 30 at the Herbert S. Ford Museum to discuss promotion of the Northwest Louisiana Scenic Byway that stretches along Louisiana Highway 2 from the Texas Border to Bernice. About fifty local residents attended the meeting to offer suggestions on how to promote area attractions. Mayor David Aubrey said Homer was the only town along the corridor that has a hotel which gives travelers an opportunity to stay overnight and spend time visiting the historic downtown. Besides Homer, towns and communities along the byway are Vivian, Hosston, Plain Dealing, Sarepta, Shongaloo, Leton, Blackburn, Lisbon, and Bernice.

Renewal Community Program Could Help Businesses In Claiborne Parish

Businesses in Claiborne Parish could receive some substantial tax incentives during the period January 1, 2002 through December 31, 2009 if selected as a Renewal Community. Some of those incentives include credit against Federal taxes of up to $1,500 during each year for all existing employees and every new hire living in the RC, $2,400 for each new hire from groups that have high unemployment rates or other special employment needs, and up to $3,500 the first year and $5,000 the second year for each new hire who is a long-term family assistance recipient.

LEAP Scores Improve After Summer Remediation

Claiborne Parish had the lowest failure rate in Northwest Louisiana among eighth graders who attended summer remediation and were retested on the math portion of the LEAP test in July. Although, the numbers include both regular and special ed students, only 44 percent failed the retest. The average overall improvement in LEAP test scores in Claiborne Parish for eighth grade Language Arts was 15.19 percent and for Math 32.72 percent. In fourth grade Language Arts, the average improvement was 11.28 percent and in Math it was 31.44 percent.

Junction City Council Raises Water Deposits, Votes To Move Sewer Plant

The Junction City (LA) Council voted to increase the amount of water deposits at their regular session on Thursday, August 9. Ronnie Daniels’ motion to raise water deposits from $50 to $75 for homeowners and from $75 to $100 for renters, was seconded by Mike Griffith, and unanimously carried.

Senior Citizen Expo To Offer Free Health Screenings & Lunch Saturday

“A Senior Citizen Expo will be held Saturday, September 8, 2001 at the Homer City Hall from 7:30 AM - 12 Noon. The event is being sponsored by TRIAD and the S.A.L.T. Council (Seniors and Lawmen Together). Healthcare representatives will be present to provide information on healthcare, Medicare, and Medicaid. There will be fourteen healthcare booths. Blood pressure, vision test, and possibly cholesterol tests will be available. Hamburgers and cokes will be served at noon. Health screenings and lunch are free. Door prizes will also be given. First Praise singers will be providing entertainment. TRIAD is composed of the sheriff of Claiborne Parish, the ``police chiefs of Homer and Haynesville, and senior citizen volunteers working together to improve the quality of life of the elderly. Thieves Caught In Act At Local Piggly Wiggly

The Homer Police Department arrested six persons about 6 PM at Piggly Wiggly in Homer on Sunday, August 2. Manager Steve Goss checked the receipt tape of one of the store's checkers after he became suspicious when a large amount of groceries purchased by five individuals only totaled $20.04. He stopped the group and after rechecking, the total bill came to $142.69. The store's surveillance camera recorded the whole event

Corney Creek Pageant Set For Saturday, September 29 -
The 2001 Corney Creek Pageant will be held at the Bernice High School Auditorium on September 29 beginning at 6 PM. Age divisions are as follows: "Baby Miss" (6-11 Months), "Toddler Miss" (1 & 2 Years), "Tiny Miss" (3 & 4 Years), "Little Miss" (5 & 6 Years), "Petite Miss" (7-9 Years), "Jr. Miss" (10-12 Years), “Teen Miss” (13-15 Years) and “Miss Corney Creek” (16-18 Years). Girls who live within a 50-mile radius of Bernice and who do not hold a current Union Parish title are encouraged to sign up. Entry fee is $40 and deadline is September 7.
