Early Morning Fire Claims Lives Of Two Small Homer Children

Matt and Leslie Manzanares were awakened about 7:30 AM Sunday morning, August 19 to find their mobile home filled with smoke. A fire had started at the opposite end of the trailer where their children’s bedroom was located. Both tried desperately to reach their children--5-year-old Christian Danielle and her 4-year-old brother, Joseph. Leslie ran next door to the home of her grandparents for help.

 

New Doctors, Caregivers Expand Services In Claiborne Parish

At a time when many hospitals in this country are facing an immediate, critical shortage of caregivers, citizens in Claiborne Parish are fortunate to have more than an ample number of physicians...and it is about to get better. Dr. Ivy McGee-Reed will be opening her new clinic in Homer next week. Dr. John H. "Trey" Smith III recently completed his first year of practice in Claiborne Parish. Pediatrician Dr. Melinda Willis of Homer recently opened her practice in Arcadia and will be associated with Homer Memorial Hospital. Nurse practitioner Melisa Suggs of Magnolia, Arkansas has been with Butler-Abshire Clinic in Haynesville for six years, but recently began working at the Willis-Knighton Regional Health Clinic in Homer

 

Police Jury Votes To Clean Trash Along Clear Lake Road 
- Three Plans Being Considered For Reapportionment

Newly-elected president of the Claiborne Parish Policy Jury, J. Weldon Kilpatrick, presided over the August meeting. Roy Lewis was elected to serve as vice-president. Jurors received a request from Donald Holcomb of Richmond, Texas, asking for help cleaning trash along the right-of-way of Clear Lake Road. The road, which connects Hwy. 79 about three miles south of Homer with the Oilfield Road, has been used as a dumping ground for some time and has three large areas of trash along the road.

 

Four Qualify For District 9 Police Jury Seat 
Four people qualified for the Claiborne Parish Police Jury seat in District Nine, formerly held by Terry W. “Buck” Tuggle. Tuggle died suddenly on June 13. Qualifying for the position were Republican Jerry A. Adkins and Independents Pamela R. Crumb, “Dick” Dorrell, and J. “Alf” Pike. Crumb was the only female to qualify. Democrat Johnnie Hough of 419 Harris Road, was the only one to qualify for Justice of the Peace in the 1st Justice of the Peace Court. The primary election will be held Saturday, October 20, 2001.

 

Athens Awarded Louisiana Community Block Grant 
The Village of Athens was awarded a grant for water for fire protection improvements in the amount of $572,203 through the Office of the Governor and the Louisiana Community Development Block Grant Program is designed to assist low to moderate income persons.

  • Pineland Jamboree Set For Friday, August 24 In Minden - The Pineland Jamboree will be held Friday night, August 24 in Minden. Homer will play Springhill at 7 PM and Haynesville will play Minden the second half. Tickets purchased in advance at Homer High School and Haynesville High School are $4. Schools keep money from these sales. Tickets at the gate are $5. The Pelican Quarterback Club is selling quarters for the home football games, at $25 per quarter.   • “Meet The Pels” August 23, Scrimmage This Friday At 5 PM - The Pelican Quarterback Club will hold their annual “Meet the Pels” Thursday, August 23 at 7 PM in Ronny G. Beard Stadium, followed by a hamburger supper in the school cafeteria. Purchase a family membership for $15 and receive 2 free hamburger plates. An individual membership of $10 receives 1 free plate. Additional plates-$2.50. Varsity and JV Pels will scrimmage Montgomery Friday, August 17 at 5 PM in Homer. Admission $1. 
     
  • Haynesville Conducting Sewer Leak Survey This Week - The Town of Haynesville is conducting a sewer leak survey this week. Non-hazardous smoke will be blown into sewer mains. Leaks in the mains will allow the smoke to vent to the atmosphere. Town crews will make places where smoke comes out and determine what repairs need to be made. Citizens who have questions can all Alvin Moss at City Hall at 624-0911. 
     
  • "First Praise" Christian Music Set For Friday, September 7 - The "First Praise" is held the first Friday night of every month at the Claiborne Country building located on Hwy. 9 just northeast of Homer. The next "First Praise" will be held Friday, September 7 at 7 PM. Free admission. Everyone is invited to come enjoy Christian music and fellowship. 
     
  • Corney Creek Pageant Set For Saturday, September 29 - The 2001 Corney Creek Pageant will be held at the Bernice High School Auditorium on September 29 beginning at 6 PM. Age divisions are as follows: "Baby Miss" (6-11 Months), "Toddler Miss" (1 & 2 Years), "Tiny Miss" (3 & 4 Years), "Little Miss" (5 & 6 Years), "Petite Miss" (7-9 Years), "Jr. Miss" (10-12 Years), “Teen Miss” (13-15 Years) and “Miss Corney Creek” (16-18 Years). Girls who live within a 50-mile radius of Bernice and who do not hold a current Union Parish title are encouraged to sign up. Entry fee is $40 and deadline is September 7. Candidates should mail entry form to Corney Creek Pageant, P.O. Box 186, Bernice, LA 71222. Entry forms are available in Homer at Lynn's Flowers, Claiborne Insurance, and The Guardian-Journal.     • Sept 15 - Woodpecker Wonders, 7 pm - This special nature program will present facts about the woodpeckers found in Louisiana. Learn about their food preferences and how to attract them.
    • Sept 22 - The Big Cheese, 7 pm - Visitors are invited to a presentation about the myths, folklore and facts about the moon.
    • Sept 28 - A Trees Life, 9:30 am - Join the park naturalist for a nature hike to examine the different tree species found in the park. A discussion of the germination process, growth and life cycle of trees will follow.

  • Webster Parish Head Start Announces Family Day Care & Head Start - The Webster Parish Police Jury Office of Community Services announces its sponsorship of the Family Day Care Home and Head Start component of the Child and Adult Care Feeding Program for PY 2001-2002. All children in attendance will be offered the same meals at no separate charge and with no physical segregation of, or other discrimination against, any child because of race, sex, age, color, handicap or national origin. Participants who are members of AFDC assistance units or Food Stamp households are automatically eligible to receive free meal benefits. This statement applies to all Family Day Care homes and to all Head Start centers under the jurisdiction of this agency. If any member of a household believes they have been discriminated against, they should write immediately to the Secretary of Agriculture, Washington, D.C. 20250.

Homer Lodge No. 152 and Athens Lodge No. 136 F&AM, are sponsoring the open team tournament. Proceeds will go to the respective lodge's charity programs. First Place will pay $350, with $300 for the Big Bass. There will be a prize of $100 for the Kids Under 12 Big Bass and $100 for the Lady Angler Big Bass. This is based on 50 teams entering.
