Kisatchie Jaycees Have Done It Again! No. 1 In Nation--Seven Years In A Row
- Education Expo Is Example Of Their Continued Success
By Susan T. Herring, Editor, The Guardian-Journal
The Kisatchie Jaycees have done it again! Although not yet official, the Kisatchie chapter will be receiving another set of awards for their work in 2000. For an unprecedented seventh year, they have been named the number one (#1) institutional chapter in the country, winning the 2000 U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce Clarence H. Howard Award--the highest award possible for institutional chapters. It is no surprise when you see events such as the Education Expo held at David Wade Correctional Center (DWCC) on Saturday, August 4. Kisatchie sponsor Jerry Thompson said that even with the continuous change of leadership in the prison-based organization, the Jaycees have been able to maintain their high standards with dedication and an enormous amount of hard work.

Adams is a certified flight instructor and a commercial pilot and will pay $100 per month for the lease, which includes a right of refusal and an option to renew. Adams, who will graduate from Louisiana Tech in May, hopes to increase the activity at the airport and promote more tourism for Lake Claiborne and Claiborne Parish. Adams said, “When you look at the airport from an aerial view, it is situated on a peninsula in the middle of the lake, which is beautiful. There are a couple of writers who work for aviation magazines who would be more than happy to write an article.”

LaCHIP To Be At Wal-Mart Saturday
An estimated 10 million children in America are uninsured. In Louisiana, over 100,000 children do not have health care coverage. Fortunately, these Louisiana kids could be covered if their parents enrolled them in LaCHIP (Louisiana Children's Health Insurance Program), where they would receive insurance coverage for regular check-ups, prescription drugs, hospitalization and immunization, plus vision care, hearing screenings, and dental coverage. A family of four can make up to $35,304 or more and qualify for LaCHIP. LaCHIP was designed primarily to help children in working families with incomes too high to qualify for traditional Medicaid but too low to afford private family health coverage. It is a health insurance program for working families whose taxes help pay for the programs and it has no connection to cash assistance or food stamps. Parents can find out more about the "No Cost Health Care Coverage" for uninsured children (up to age 19) this Saturday, August 19 from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Back to School Booth at Wal-Mart. The event is being sponsored by The Shreveport Regional Medicaid Office. There will be prizes, drawings, and refreshments. For more information, call toll free 1-877-252-2447.
