Homer Woman Charged In Fatal Stabbing Of El Dorado Man

Kisha Lashawn Moore, 24, of Homer was arrested and charged with the second degree murder of Cesar Olvera, 27, of El Dorado. Olvera was stabbed in the chest sometime between 1:30 AM and 2:00 AM Sunday, July 22. He was transported to the Medical Center of South Arkansas where he was pronounced dead. Moore’s sister, Ashanta Tamee Guerra, 23, also of Homer, was charged as an accomplice to the second degree murder. Captain Carolyn Dykes, Chief of Detectives with the El Dorado Police Department, said the murder appeared to be the result of a domestic dispute that escalated into physical violence.

Junction City Man Arrested For Incest, Rape, Sexual Battery

Steven McLelland of Junction City, Louisiana was arrested by the Claiborne Parish Sheriff Office on Sunday, July 29. McLelland, 38, was charged with incest, oral sexual battery, and aggravated rape. He is being held in the Claiborne Parish Detention Center under $600,000.00 bond.

School Board Approves Hiring New Principals For Two Homer Schools

The Claiborne Parish School Board approved the recommendation of Superintendent Gary Jones for principal positions at Homer Junior High and Homer Elementary School at a Special Called Meeting on Wednesday, July 25. Pat Lee will be the new principal at Homer Elementary and Gurtha Capers will replace Janice Kennedy-Williams as principal at Homer Junior High. Williams will be taking over duties as principal of the Alternative School, replacing Bob Bond. Debra Winzer will be the Administrative Assistant at Homer Elementary and Joanne Hood the new Assistant Principal at Homer Junior High. Glen Kyle will take over duties as Administrative Assistant at the Alternative School.

Two Haynesville Men Killed In Accident On US 79

Two Haynesville men were killed about 8:22 PM on Tuesday, July 24, when their vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Hwy. 79 and Pinehill Road approximately 7 miles north of Homer. James Irons, Jr., 21, and Daniel Brown, 28, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Haynesville Recreation District To Call For Tax Renewal Election In October

Recreation District Board members for Wards 2 and 3 called a meeting on May 24 to discuss placing the renewal of the Recreation Tax in Haynesville. Chairman Jimmy Langford told board members William Cubie and Tim Cole, Haynesville Mayor-elect Mickey Mayfield and Police Juror Weldon Kilpatrick that he had spoken with attorney Allen Offner who recommended placing the tax renewal on the October ballot. Tax Assessor Clyde Hightower said the millage rate for last year was 6.1 mills. Board members Steve Lewis and Jerry Smith were absent.

The Junction City, Louisiana Town Council met July 12 in regular session. Present at the meeting were Mayor Preston Rogers; Councilmen Ronnie Daniels, Arnold Jones, and Mike Griffith; Clerk Carolyn Enis; and Water Superintendent Terry Smith. Councilmen voted unanimously to pass a resolution setting the millage rate at 4.99 mills for the 2001 tax year.

The Homer Chamber of Commerce now has monies to lend through the Revolving Loan Program, according to Mac Brakefield, Executive Director of the Chamber. Anyone who is interested in starting a business or enlarging a business within an eight mile radius of Homer is eligible. Collateral must be available and credit worthiness is essential. These funds were received from the USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program to assist small businesses and provide for jobs in Homer. The USDA prohibits discrimination in all its programs and activities on the basis or race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, and marital or family status. (Not all bases apply to all programs.” Loan preferences will be made on the basis of job creation. Further information may be obtained by calling Mrs. Brakefield at the Chamber office at 927-3271. Homer And Haynesville Mayors Sign Proclamation National KidsDay

Haynesville Mayor Mickey Mayfield and Homer Mayor David Aubrey signed a proclamation designating Sunday, August 5 as National KidsDay in Homer and Haynesville. National KidsDay is a special day set aside each year, the first Sunday in August, to encourage and remind adults that the meaningful time they share with children is important to their development. The National KidsDay Alliance is comprised of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, 4-H, KidsPeace, and YMCA. Claiborne Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Sabrina Smith and the following club members from Homer and Haynesville were present at the signing--Quanesha Evans, Cordarius Winzer, LaToura Williams, Deonta Winzer, Jamichael Mays, Hope Willis and Marvin Rogers.

Members of the Claiborne Academy Rebel Ladies fast pitch team should go to the office of Dr. Cliff Salmon at WK Regional Health Clinic on Thursday, August 9 at 3:30 PM for physicals.
Dr. Mark Haynes and staff at Claiborne Family Medical Clinic will administer physicals for the Claiborne Academy Rebel football team for players in grades 4-12 starting at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, August 14.

The Homer High School Band will begin practice Monday, August 13 at 8:30 AM in the Homer High Band room. Practice on the first day will end at 10:30 AM. Band Director David Butler asks students to please bring their instrument the first day and be prepared to play.

Homer Masonic Lodge To Hold Charity Bass Tournament -
The First Annual Masonic Charity Bass Tournament will be held on Lake Claiborne on Saturday, October 20. Homer Lodge No. 152 and Athens Lodge No. 136 F&AM, are sponsoring the open team tournament. Proceeds will go to the respective lodge's charity programs. First Place will pay $350, with $300 for the Big Bass. There will be a prize of $100 for the Kids Under 12 Big Bass and $100 for the Lady Angler Big Bass. This is based on 50 teams entering. Junction City Summer Band Camp Set For August 6-16 -
According to Band Director Allen Simmons, Summer Band Camp practice for the Junction City High School Dragon Marching Band will be held August 6-16 from 8:00-11:30 AM at the Dragon Bandroom and Practice Field. All students who will be in this year’s marching band are to report with their instruments and the music issued at the end of the last semester. The Dragon Majorettes and Color Guard will report one week earlier for their special camp - July 30-August 3 from 8AM-noon each day. There will be a Band Parents Meeting on August 13 at 7 PM in the bandroom to discuss plans for the 2001-2002 school year.

Kindergarten Registration, New Student Enrollment At Junction City -
New students at Junction City Elementary in kindergarten through 6th grade can register through Friday, August 3 at the elementary office between 8:30 AM and noon. Children must be 5 years old on or before September 15, 2001 to enter kindergarten for the 2001-2002 school year. Parents need the child's birth certificate, social security card and shot record. An Early Childhood Physical form must be obtained from the school to be completed. Proof of residence is required (utility bill, driver's license with 911 address, rent receipt).
