Haynesville Council Hires One Police Officer, Suspends Another 
- Votes To Move City Hall To Old Arkla Building

At a Special Called Meeting Thursday, July 20, Haynesville Town Council members Otto Black, H.U. Slaid, Joyce Major, Kenny Killgore, and Alvin Kendrick voted to go into executive session to discuss a complaint received by the Haynesville Police Department about a local police officer. After reconvening, the Council voted 4 to 1 to suspend Officer Larry Jones, without pay, pending the outcome of an investigation being conducted by the Louisiana State Police. Voting against the motion was Alvin Kendrick.

 

Homer Man Reported Missing, Found Drowned In Small Pond 
Robert Hamilton, 57, of 408 King Street in Homer, drowned Tuesday, July 17 in a small pond just off Old Colquitt Road on Tuesday, July 17. He was last seen about 7 AM on July 17 when he borrowed his son’s car to go fishing. About 8 AM the following day, his son James Hamilton reported him missing at the Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office and a search of area ponds was initiated.

 

Homer Hospital Finances Improve Despite Loss In June 
- Claiborne Charities Offers To Fund Nursing Scholarships

Administrator James McClung told the Board of Directors at their meeting Tuesday, June 17, they would never see him as happy with a $111,000 loss as reflected in the June financial statement for the Homer Memorial Hospital, since the loss is mainly from adjustments to income, such as transfers to bad debt and capital expenditures. Board Chairman Buddy Pixley said, “The cash money in the bank is the final judgment of how the hospital is doing. We have $450,000 more money today than this time last year...and last year, we had more money than the previous year.”

 

Renovations At Governor's Mansion Discussed At Kisatchie Jaycees Meeting

The Kisatchie Jaycees were honored on July 20th by having two very special guests visit our chapter. Driving all the way from Franklin and Mamou, Louisiana our two guests came a long way to conduct a Governmental Involvement program, which proved to be very enjoyable and educational for all in attendance.

 

First Guaranty Bank President Resigns 
Don W. Ayres, President and Chief Executive Officer of First Guaranty Bank in Hammond announced his resignation to enter into retirement. For the past six months, he had been considering the move to retire and made it official on Friday, July 20. He feels confident with the present staff at the Bank and the momentum of the institution. He has willingly agreed to remain on the Board of Directors and is delighted to contribute in the new area.

 

Haynesville Hospital Board Discusses Plans For Hospital 
Chairman H. U. “Mutt” Slaid told the Board of Commissioners of the Claiborne Parish Hospital Service District No. 1 at their regular meeting on Thursday, July 12 in Haynesville that the Homer Memorial Hospital had canceled the bids for a Behavioral Health Unit in Homer. Slaid said he discussed the $5,000 monthly lease of the North Claiborne Hospital with Homer hospital administrator James McClung and the possibility of doing something with the unused space.

  • Football Physicals Set For All Homer Football Players - All Homer High and Homer Junior High football players will meet Tuesday, July 31 at the Homer High School Fieldhouse at 2:30 PM to take physicals for the upcoming football season.   • Jacob Hollenbeck 1st Annual Co-Ed Softball Tournament - The Jacob Hollenbeck 1st Annual Co-Ed Softball Tournament is being hosted by Westside Baptist Church and will be held Saturday, July 28 at the Haynesville High School ballpark.   • U.S. Forest Service To Host Meeting On Corney Lake - The U.S. Forest Service will host a meeting July 31 at 6:30 PM at Summerfield High School to discuss several topics concerning Corney Lake. A biologist will answer questions about possibly lowering the lake to control vegetation, stocking Florida bass, and other concerns you may have. A fish fry is in the works for this meeting so if you plan to attend please call Butch Bays store at 927-2603 so we can get a head count. We will pass the hat to help offset the cost of the meal, so please come prepared. 
     
  • Haynesville Council Changes Regular Meeting To August 21 - The Haynesville Town Council normally meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6 PM. The regular meeting in August will be delayed one week. The Council will meet on Tuesday, August 21 at 6 PM in the Council Chambers.

  • Free Blood Pressure And Sugar Check At Council On Aging - Free blood pressure and sugar check will be available Wednesday, August 8, from 10:30-11:30 AM.   • Lake Claiborne State Park To Host “Exploring The Night” - The Lake Claiborne State Park will “Explore the Night” on Saturday, July 28 from 7:00-8:30 PM. Visitors can tour the park at night with the site naturalist and learn the effect of darkness on our senses, how to call an owl and identification of various animal sounds at night.   • Mt. Olive Christian School To Hold 19th Annual Rodeo July 27-28 - The 19th Annual Mt. Olive Rodeo will be held July 27-28 at 8 PM nightly at the Gantt’s Arena in Athens, off Hwy. 518 on Gantt Arena Road. Simmons Rodeo Contractors of Springhill will provide the stock. Specialty acts include Rudy Burns who will entertain as clown and barrel man. A trail ride will leave from Reed and Norma Simpkins on Hwy. 519 in Arcadia at 2 PM Saturday.   • Public Schools Begin Standard Uniform Policy This Fall - The Claiborne Parish School Board adopted a standard uniform policy for all Claiborne Parish public schools, except Pineview, for the 2001-2002 academic school year beginning in August. The policy states that all pants and/or walking shorts shall be navy or khaki in color with belt loops. (Haynesville students who received notices that listed black pants were not correct.) All shirts shall be either white or one of the adopted school colors for that school. Shirts must have a collar and may be short or long sleeve, pullover, or button up. No other colors will be permitted. All schools will be given a one year grace period, or wear out period, for the 2001-2002 academic school year ONLY. Students will be allowed to wear colors previously approved by that school for this one academic year only. Belts and appropriate footwear must be worn. Principals shall have the latitude to determine the appropriateness of the footwear within his/her respective school, as long as application of rules are consistent and students are made aware of the rules.Shirt colors at Athens High School, Haynesville High School, Haynesville Junior High School, and Haynesville Elementary School will be black, LSU gold, and white. At Homer High School, Homer Junior High School, and Homer Elementary, shirt colors will be LSU purple, LSU gold, and white. At Summerfield High School, shirt colors will be red, white, and navy.   • Junction City Summer Band Camp Set For August 6-16 - According to Band Director Allen Simmons, Summer Band Camp practice for the Junction City High School Dragon Marching Band will be held August 6-16 from 8:00-11:30 AM at the Dragon Bandroom and Practice Field. All students who will be in this year’s marching band are to report with their instruments and the music issued at the end of the last semester. The Dragon Majorettes and Color Guard will report one week earlier for their special camp - July 30-August 3 from 8AM-noon each day. There will be a Band Parents Meeting on August 13 at 7 PM in the bandroom to discuss plans for the 2001-2002 school year. 
     
  • Ford Museum Needs Photos From WWII Home Front - The Herbert S. Ford Museum is searching for photos taken on the Home Front during World War II of the activities that occurred in Claiborne Parish--scrap metal drives, war bond sales, Red Cross gatherings, etc. Photos of our WWII veterans are also needed for display for the upcoming Produce for Victory: Posters on the American Home Front, 1941-1945 exhibit from the LEH and Smithsonian Institute.   • Boys & Girls Club Needs Donations For Summer Feeding Program - The Claiborne Boys & Girls Club is needing donations for their Summer Feeding Program. The USDA Summer Feeding Program runs out July 27. In order to keep the club open from 8AM-5PM for the next two weeks, Director Sabrina Smith says they will need enough money to feed the children each day. Anyone interested in donating should call the Club at 927-2718. 
     
  • Claiborne Academy Work Days Scheduled In August - Claiborne Academy work days for repairing, painting, cleaning, and yard work have been scheduled on the following Saturdays beginning at 8 AM--August 4 and August 18. 
     
  • Pelican Football Season Tickets Will Go On Sale August 13 - Homer Pelican Football Season Tickets will go on sale Monday,.August 13. Previous ticket holders of season tickets, parking passes, or box seats will be given the opportunity to renew, then those not renewed will be offered on a first come, first serve basis. Ticket prices are as follows: $5 - general admission, $20 - season tickets, $25 - lower box seats, $25 - sky boxes, and $15 - parking passes. For more info, call Homer High School at 927-2985. 
     
  • Second Hunter Education Course Set For July 26-28 - The second of three Hunter Education Classes will be held July 26-28 at the Homer Fire Department, for ages 10 and up. The class is required for anyone who plans to hunt this fall. The final class will be held August 9-11. On Thursday and Friday, classes will be held from 6:00-9:30 PM and on Saturday from 8AM-Noon.   • The 85th Colvin Reunion Will Be Held Saturday, August 4 - Descendants of John Colvin and Hanna Price Colvin of Chester, South Carolina will hold their 85th reunion on August 4, 2001. The Colvin Reunion, one of the largest family gatherings in North Louisiana, will be held at the Colvin Memorial Building in Unionville, Louisiana, north of Ruston.   • Claiborne Council On Aging Events - Bingo is played every Friday after Lunch. Lunches are served daily Monday thru Friday. Exercise treadmills and rowing machines are available. Slip and molds are available for ceramics. 
     
  • Smoke Detectors For The Elderly Offered through TRIAD - TRIAD of Claiborne wants all seniors age 65 and above, to have a smoke detector. You may also qualify if you're disabled.
