District 4 - Joe A. Sturges--1,185;
District 5 - Bobby Liles--1,229;

Total Over 18 Age Population In Homer is 2,626.

At the regular meeting of the Claiborne Parish Police Jury on Thursday, July 12, jurors adopted a resolution of appreciation and gratitude to the late Terry W. Tuggle, stating they were deeply saddened by his unexpected and untimely death on June 13. His death will leave a void in Claiborne Parish, especially in Homer, and his legacy will be remembered for years by those who knew and loved him. A copy of the resolution will be presented to Tuggle’s family at the August meeting.

Claiborne Boys & Girls Club Welcomes New Director

Sabrina Smith accepted the position as Executive Director of the Claiborne Boys & Girls Club on June 18, replacing Sandra Maddry ,who recently resigned. Smith is in her fourth week and has been so busy overseeing both the Homer and Haynesville units, she hasn’t had time to unpack. She applied for the job after meeting Maddry and Homer Mayor David Aubrey at the Youth of the Year Conference in Baton Rouge in April. Just after she signed the one-year contract with Claiborne, she was offered the executive director position at the Rapides Parish Boys and Girls Club in Alexandria.

Mitchell Sentenced For 1st Degree Robbery

District Attorney Walter May’s office announced July 13 that Dan Mitchell, 21, of Homer was sentenced to thirty (30) years at hard labor, without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence for his conviction March 21, 2001 for the First Degree Robbery of Bill’s Dollar Store in 1999. Two of the three male juveniles also arrested in the robbery pled guilty and were sentenced in November, 2000 to Juvenile Life. They will be released in four years, at the age of 21. A third juvenile, fourteen years old, is appealing his conviction.

Retired Air Force General Horace Wade Died June 14

Retired Air Force General Horace M. Wade, a native of Magnolia, Arkansas, died June 14 at the age of 85 at his home in Tucson, Arizona. He was a first cousin to General David Wade whom David Wade Correctional Center is named for. Survivors include his wife, former Christine Murphy of Magnolia, and a sister, Junette Arcus of Poughkeepsie, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. June Wade and Nettie Torbet Wade, both natives of Claiborne Parish living about 5 miles south of Homer on Hwy. 79, and three brothers Edwin, Winston, and Milvean. Several cousins still live in the Homer-Haynesville area today.

“Harvey Rabbit And Friends” To Visit Library July 21 -
“The Harvey Rabbit and Friends Show” will be appearing at the Claiborne Parish Library, Saturday, July 21 at 10:30 a.m. It features Harvey, the Talking Rabbit, Cecil the Orangutan, and T-Boy the Alligator with Laura and Tim Allured in a fun-filled, energetic show of ventriloquism, puppetry, music, magic, comedy, and audience participation. Laura and Tim have been headline entertainers with Carnival Cruise Lines and on the Mississippi Queen. They have appeared on numerous national TV shows. The Allureds are graduates of McNeese State University in vocal music education and have toured elementary schools throughout Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi. Also, they have been familiar faces at libraries throughout Louisiana as guest performers for the Summer Reading Program since 1991. They have produced four Harvey Rabbit videos--”Hooray for the Drug-Free Team”, “Put on the Brakes!”, “Show Some Character!”, and most recently “A Golden Rule School”. Come on down to the library at 901 Edgewood and enjoy this fun performance at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 21.

U.S. Forest Service To Host Meeting On Corney Lake -
The U.S. Forest Service will host a meeting July 31 at 6:30 PM at Summerfield High School to discuss several topics concerning Corney Lake. A biologist will answer questions about possibly lowering the lake to control vegetation, stocking Florida bass, and other concerns you may have. A fish fry is in the works for this meeting so if you plan to attend please call Butch Bays store at 927-2603 so we can get a head count. We will pass the hat to help offset the cost of the meal, so please come prepared.

Ninth Annual Caney Triathlon To Take Place At Caney Lakes -
The Ninth Annual Caney Triathlon will take place at Caney Lakes Recreation Area on Sunday, July 22. Starting time for the event will be 7:30 AM and will last until approximately 1 PM. The Caney Lakes Recreation Area will be closed during this time to day use users. The swimming area parking lot will be closed from Saturday, July 12 until 1 PM Sunday, July 22. Some inconvenience in normal activities may be experienced during the set-up on Saturday through the completion of the event on Sunday. Normal activities and access will resume at 1 PM on Sunday, July 22. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Lake Claiborne State Park will “Explore the Night” on Saturday, July 28 from 7:00-8:30 PM. Mt. Olive Christian School To Hold 19th Annual Rodeo July 27-28 -
The 19th Annual Mt. Olive Rodeo will be held July 27-28 at 8 PM nightly at the Gantt’s Arena in Athens, off Hwy. 518 on Gantt Arena Road. Simmons Rodeo Contractors of Springhill will provide the stock. Specialty acts include Rudy Burns who will entertain as clown and barrel man. A trail ride will leave from Reed and Norma Simpkins on Hwy. 519 in Arcadia at 2 PM Saturday. Joe Webb Library To Hold Closing Program July 25 -
The closing program of the 2001 Summer Reading Program will be held at the Joe Webb Memorial branch of the Claiborne Parish Library on Wednesday, July 25 at 10 a.m. for all ages. A special performance by the Edgewood Players will be included in this program. The Edgewood Players will perform at the Claiborne Parish Library in Homer on Thursday, July 26 at 2 p.m. for all ages. Ford Museum Needs Photos From WWII Home Front -
The Herbert S. Ford Museum is searching for photos taken on the Home Front during World War II of the activities that occurred in Claiborne Parish--scrap metal drives, war bond sales, Red Cross gatherings, etc. Photos of our WWII veterans are also needed for display for the upcoming Produce for Victory: Posters on the American Home Front, 1941-1945 exhibit from the LEH and Smithsonian Institute. The North Central Louisiana Arts Council, through its Arts Chatauqua/Summer Arts Camp for Kids program, presents 12 sessions of the popular weeklong arts workshops in all parishes in service--Bienville, Claiborne, Jackson, Lincoln, and Union. Second Hunter Education Course Set For July 26-28 -
The second of three Hunter Education Classes will be held July 26-28 at the Homer Fire Department, for ages 10 and up. The class is required for anyone who plans to hunt this fall. The final class will be held August 9-11. On Thursday and Friday, classes will be held from 6:00-9:30 PM and on Saturday from 8AM-Noon. Descendants of John Colvin and Hanna Price Colvin of Chester, South Carolina will hold their 85th reunion on August 4, 2001.
