Homer Council Votes To Redraw District Lines 
Entergy Customers To Get Credit On Bills

Ideal Population In Each Of Five Districts In The Town of Homer Is 525. The Over 18 Age Population In Each District Is As Follows: District 1 - Scott Robertson,503; District 2 - Joseph Merritt, 451; District 3 - Jess Robertson,575; District 4 - Ed Watson,644; District 5 - Patricia Jenkin,453. Total Over 18 Age Population In Homer is 2,626. 
Gray Stothart, Vice President of the Division of Economic Development with the Coordinating & Development Corporation, told the Homer Town Council at their regular meeting Monday, July 2, Census 2000 figures indicate reapportionment will be necessary to obtain equal representation in each of the town’s five districts. The total population of Homer is 3,788, with 2,626 of those over 18 years of age and eligible to vote. To divide equally, each district should have 525 eligible voters, with no more than a 5 percent deviation. All but one district showed more than the 5 percent deviation, making it necessary to redraw the district lines.

 

Junction City School Board Proceeds With Plans For Track 
Superintendent Alvin Kelly informed school board members John Sims, Randy Lyons, Kevin Hux, and Stan Owens at the regular meeting of the Junction City School District on June 12 that plans are still underway for a new track. A motion by Hux to remove the old bleacher boards and to move two light poles to make room for the track was approved. New bleacher boards will cost about $3,000.

 

3-Wheeler Accident Claims Life Of Junction City Boy 
Matt Taylor, 16, of Junction City, Arkansas, died Thursday, June 28, 2001, from injuries received in an accident about three miles north of the Corney Creek bridge between Summerfield and Junction City. Taylor was northbound on La. 9 when he suddenly turned his ATV Honda 3-wheeler left towards a private driveway into the path of an oncoming 1985 Lincoln Town Car driven by Robert Webster, 59, of Lillie. Webster was not injured, but his wife, Annie, 54, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to Homer Memorial Hospital where she was kept overnight for observation and released on Friday.

 

Healthsouth Rehab Satellite Hospital Opened Monday In Claiborne Parish

HEALTHSOUTH, the nation's leader in rehabilitation opened it's second satellite facility in North Louisiana on Monday, July 2. Located in the building with Claiborne Manor Nursing Home, HEALTHSOUTH admitted eight patients in the first few days, filling almost half of the eighteen available beds. HEALTHSOUTH operates from a 90-bed long term acute care license in Ruston. Last year, they opened a similar satellite facility in Farmerville.

 

Haynesville Mayor, Police Chief, Council Sworn In This Week 
New Haynesville Mayor Mickey Mayfield, new Police Chief Jim Garner, and new Alderman in District 4, Otto Black, were sworn in this week, along with incumbent aldermen Alvin Kendrick (District 1), H.U. "Mutt" Slaid (District 2), Joyce Majors (District 3), and Kenny Killgore (District 5).

  • Library To Hold “Out Of This World Art Show” July 11 - The Haynesville Branch of the Claiborne Parish Library will hold an “Out of This World Art Show” Wednesday, July 11 at 10 AM for all children, age 3-12, who registered for Summer Reading Program.   • Adult GED Classes Offered At Homer Vo-Tech This Summer - The Claiborne Parish Adult Education Center will re-open after summer vacation on Monday, July 2. Any person 17 and up who is interested in obtaining a GED or improving basic skills may enroll at 8 AM or any day after July 2. For more information, call 927-5302. The center is located at the Northwest Technical School on the Minden Highway south of Homer.

  • Parish School Handbook Now Available For Annual Review - The Claiborne Parish Schools Section 504 Policy and Procedure Handbook will be available for public review July 9-13 according to Barbara Monzingo, 504 Coordinator.   • Newspaper Recycling Now Available In Haynesville - Newspapers in paper bags can now be dropped off at Haynesville Town Hall in the large blue plastic receptacle for recycling. Other drop-off sites are Homer Town Hall, Homer Jr. High, and R&S Hardware in Athens. No plastic bags. Newspapers ONLY. Please do not place colored ad slicks or magazines in bins.   • Council On Aging To Offer Emergency Pendants To Seniors - The Claiborne Council On Aging has entered into a new partnership with the Louisiana Association of Councils on Aging and Acadian On Call to provide an enhanced personal emergency response system for senior citizens in the community. Council member-subscribers are provided with a small pendant worn around the neck. In the event of an emergency, a touch of the button on the pendant immediately alerts the Acadian Ambulance Communications Center where computerized records are called up automatically, providing the subscriber’s address, medical history, and any instructions for dealing with specific medical conditions to a highly trained medical professional from Acadian Ambulance’s nationally recognized staff.   • Homer To Host Dixie Girls Softball District 6 Tournament - The Dixie Girls Softball District 6 Tournament will be hosted by Homer this year. The Tournament will begin on Saturday, July 7 at Armory Park. Teams from Homer, Minden, West Monroe, Mansfield, NOLA, and B&W will be participating. Age groups will be Darlings (7-8 years), Angels (9-10), Ponytails (11-12), Belles (13-15), and Debs (16-18). Opening ceremonies will be at 4:45 PM Saturday, July 7. Games begin at 3 PM, Saturday, July 7, 3 PM on Sunday, July 8, 4 PM on Monday, July 9, 5 PM on Tuesday, July 10, 6 PM on Wednesday, July 11, and, if needed, at 7 PM on Thursday, July 12. 
     
  • “Believe It Or Not” Program At Lake Claiborne State Park - “Believe It or Not,” a program that will introduce you to the strange and unusual uses for plants and animals, will be held at the Lake Claiborne State Park on Saturday, July 7 at 7 PM.   • Hunter Education Courses Set For July And August - Three Hunter Education Classes will be held this summer at the Homer Fire Department. The class is required for anyone who plans to hunt this fall. Classes will be held July 12-14, July 26-28, and August 9-11 for ages 10 and up. On Thursday and Friday, classes will be held from 6-9:30 PM and on Saturday from 8AM-Noon. Class size is limited to 30 students and pre-registration is required.
