Ongoing Drug Investigation Leads To Twenty-One Arrests Monday Night

Claiborne Parish Sheriff Kenneth Volentine announced Tuesday, June 12 that another round of arrests had been made in the 18-month long investigation into drug distribution in Claiborne Parish. Since the investigation began in November, 1999, 49 of 63 people have been arrested on 113 counts of Distribution of Schedule II cocaine and Schedule I marijuana. Arrests are expected soon for another fourteen fugitives. Not included in this total are five unnamed individuals who remain under federal indictment in the Homer-Minden area

Jury Rescinds Vote On Armory Park, Then Approves Cooperative Agreement At Special Meeting

• At A Special Called Meeting On Monday, June 11 At 10 AM, Jurors Voted 7 To 2 To Enter Into A Cooperative Endeavor Agreement With The Town Of Homer For The Armory Park Property For A Period Of Fifty Years.

The Claiborne Parish Police Jury voted at their regular meeting on June 7 to rescind the motion made at the May 10 meeting to transfer ownership of the Armory Park property to the Town of Homer. Juror Bobbie Liles said according to state law it was not legal. Jury attorney Danny Newell said the Jury could amend the motion to say "donate the exclusive use and possession of the property through a cooperative agreement."

At a Special Called Meeting on Monday, June 11, the Homer Town Council voted to approve the Cooperative Endeavor Agreement with the Claiborne Parish Police Jury concerning the Armory Park property, with two amendments. The agreement will be valid for a period of fifty years, as long as the park is used for recreational purposes. The Town added an option to renew the contract at the end of fifty years, and that the Town have the option of removing any and all improvements made on the premises upon termination of the agreement.

Certified Teachers Get Pay Raise, School Board Partners With Vo-Tech

School Superintendent Gary Jones told the Claiborne Parish School Board at their regular meeting June 7 that all certified teachers in the state will receive a pay raise beginning with their September paycheck. Superintendents across the state contacted their state legislators to object the BESE Board formula which would have given teachers in some of the highest paid districts in the state a $2,800 raise. The BESE Board adjusted the formula, giving all certified teachers across the state a $2,060 raise. Non-certified teachers, support personnel, and superintendents were not included in the pay raise proposal.

Presbyterian Village Nursing Home Installs New Generator

Residents at the Presbyterian Village Nursing Home on Hwy. 79 won’t have to worry about being without electricity during another ice storm. A new 225 kilowatt generator was recently installed. The generator can carry the entire load of the nursing home for four days, using a 550 gallon diesel tank installed on site. When the electricity goes off, the system automatically comes on within 20 seconds.

Hunter Education Courses Set For July And August -
Three Hunter Education Classes will be held this summer at the Homer Fire Department. The class is required for anyone who plans to hunt this fall. Classes will be held July 12-14, July 26-28, and August 9-11 for ages 10 and up. On Thursday and Friday, classes will be held from 6-9:30 PM and on Saturday from 8AM-Noon. The Claiborne Parish Library began its Summer Reading Program Monday, June 11. This year’s theme is “Zip Into The Future--READ!”. It promises a wealth of activities for children ages 3-12. Parents are encouraged to help make the program successful. They can set a good example by reading themselves. They can take a few moments each day to read to their children and they can visit the library often. The theme for the first week, “I Want To Be A....” begins in Haynesville Wednesday, June 13 at 10 AM for all ages and in Homer on Thursday, June 14, at 10 AM (ages 6-K) and at 2 PM (grades 1-6). American Legion Baseball Team To Play Here Friday -
The American Legion baseball team will play Haughton here Friday, June 15 at Armory Park. Game time is 5 PM. On Tuesday, June 19, the “Claiborne Reds” will play Winners Circle at Armory Park beginning at 7 PM and will travel to Parkway on Wednesday, June 20 to play the Red Sox at 7 PM. On Thursday, June 21, they will be at home to play Minden at Armory Park beginning at 7 PM.

The LSU AgCenter will hold a continuing education workshop at the Ruston, Louisiana Civic Center on Monday June 18th titled "Forestland Law and Policy." This workshop will provide the audience with diverse speakers and a variety of topics related to law and policy aspects of forestland management. It is designed to be informative rather than overly technical. Topics to be covered include updates on state and federal forestland-related policies and laws, the Canadian Softwood Lumber Agreement, estate planning and taxation, timber theft, and other issues.
