Council Urges Residents To Conserve Water, Stop Watering Lawns
Town Water Levels Are Low But Safe To Drink
By Susan T. Herring, Editor, The Guardian-Journal
• A Special Called Meeting Of The Homer Town Council Will Be Held Monday, June 11 at 6 PM To Adopt The Proposed 2001-2002 Budget, To Consider A Possible Sales Tax Proposal, And To Address Needed Street Repairs.
Town water superintendent Hosea Monroe and wastewater plant manager Vivian "Bubba" Moffett attended the regular meeting of the Homer Town Council Monday, June 4. They told Mayor David Aubrey and Homer Selectmen the Mayfield water well went down about a week ago. Only two backup wells are supplying water to the town. Water levels were pulled so low at the Caver well, it drained the main storage tank putting air in the lines. The air bubbles cause the water to appear cloudy but is safe to drink. The new pump should be in Friday and the Mayfield well should be back on line by the middle of next week. Residents are urged to conserve water and stop watering lawns to avoid a severe water shortage.

Homer Memorial Hospital Named For World War Veterans
Hospital Employees Hold Reception To Honor Local Vets
By Susan T. Herring, Editor, The Guardian-Journal
Homer Memorial Hospital will be 52 years old on July 1. It was built in 1949 and dedicated on July 13, 1949 in honor of all veterans of World War I and World War II. Three years earlier a group of concerned citizens saw the need for a hospital. It was the end of the war. The boys were returning home. Patriotism was high. There were no marches, no protests. Those who had stayed home bought war stamps and war bonds. They saved scrap iron. Everything was rationed--tires, gasoline, sugar, coffee, shoes. There had been no new automobiles since 1941. Everyone had pulled together to support the war.

“Habitat For Life 2001” Reminds Us To Protect Our Natural Resources
“The most precious things of life are near at hand, without money and without price.” - John Burroughs
The theme for the 2001 Soil and Water Stewardship Observance celebrated the first week of May was “Habitat for Life.” This annual observance reminds us of our individual responsibilities to care for the soil and water resources upon which we depend. Its history dates back to the tradition of the Rogation Days in Medieval Europe, where a celebration of prayer and penance became a popular annual event designed to implore God to help people avoid privation and suffering from periods of bad weather, drought, or crop failures.
