A committee of jurors, with Joe Sturges as chairman, met with Mayor David Aubrey after the April meeting of the Claiborne Parish Police Jury to discuss the Armory Park property. At the May 10 meeting,, the committee recommended continuing with the same lease agreement signed with the Town in 1947. Jury President Buck Tuggle said the jury would continue to be willing to help with improvements to the park, suggesting needed restrooms, making more room for parking on the northwest side, and possibly even rerouting the creek further south to give more room for expansion.

A number of citizens, businessmen, and school officials attended a public meeting Thursday, May 17 at Homer High School to discuss the future of the Homer school system--mainly physical needs and security issues at the school’s facilities. Fred Young said, “We want to be proactive.” In response to the report released in January by the Louisiana Small Town Program, a small committee met recently to discuss education concerns and some of the options given to improve the education program in Homer. One option was to consolidate all parish schools. School Superintendent Gary Jones said, from a business standpoint, consolidation is not the way to go in Claiborne Parish.

Baseball Incident Ends In Tragedy

On any May evening in Claiborne Parish, you will typically find Dixie baseball fields filled with activity. Tuesday, May 15, 2001 was no different. Occasionally, an injury will send one player to the sidelines, giving another a chance to play the field. Collisions are part of the game, not only at bases or home plate, but also in the field. Two outfielders go after the same high fly ball, running hard. Neither takes his eye off the ball. Neither makes the call. As they both reach out their gloves, they collide--bouncing off each other. No one catches the ball. Both get up, a little dazed, but ready for the next play. Typical little league baseball.

The plans to organize the First Baptist Church of Haynesville began in September, 1901, according to minutes of the Friendship Baptist Church. In the beginning, services were held in a warehouse owned by Mr. S.L. Sims which was located on the site of the present parking lot of Hibernia National Bank. They worshiped there until a frame building could be built where the education building now stands. The first pastor was Rev. T.J. Brasher. At the time, Sunday School classes were spread out in the one large room so they could hear their teachers.
