Claiborne Parish LEAP 21 Scores Show Big Improvement

The first report of results from the Spring 2001 LEAP 21 tests for Claiborne Parish students were received Thursday, May 10 show a big improvement. Superintendent Gary Jones said test scores are not where we want them to be yet, but change doesn’t happen overnight. In spite of the decision to test Special Ed students on-level this year, the number of failures were much lower than last year. Jones said, “This is a good year..a really good year.”

 

Class Of 2001 Graduation Ceremonies Throughout Parish, Area 
Several area schools will be hosting graduation ceremonies during the following week: Claiborne Academy will be Thursday, May 17, 2001 at 8 PM, with valedictorian, Ashley Stanley, and salutatorian, Lauren Palmer. Pineview High School will be Friday, May 18, 2001 at 7 PM with valedictorian, Clarissa La'Shun Watts and honor students, Jacinta Alysia Norton and Shareka La'Trice Ford. Junction City High School will be Friday, May 18, 2001 at 8 PM with valedictorian, Adam Owens, and salutatorian, William Peyton Cagle. Summerfield High School will be Monday, May 21, 2001 at 8 PM with valedictorian, Samantha Bailey, and co-salutatorians, Joshua Greer and Kelli Suggs. Homer High School will be Tuesday, May 22, 2001 with valedictorian Tiffany Nicole Porter, and honor graduates Jeffrey Blake Canterbury and Christy Elizabeth Gilbert. Athens High School will be on Sunday, May 10, 2001 at 4 PM. Haynesville High School will be on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at 7:30 PM.

 

Claiborne Parish School Board Hears Presentation On Balanced Literacy 
- Vo-Tech Classes To Be Offered In High Schools This Fall

•Claiborne Parish School Board Members To Serve At The Academic Scholars Banquet To Be Held At The Claiborne Parish Fair Barn In Haynesville Tuesday, May 15, To Recognize 66 Honor Students In Claiborne Parish Public And Private Schools. 
Homer Elementary Principal Pam Prince and Ann McKean were presenters at the International Reading Conference in New Orleans last week. At the May 10 meeting of the Claiborne Parish School Board, they gave a synopsis of their power point presentation on “Balanced Literacy,” the new curriculum implemented at Homer Elementary this year.

 

Former Housing Director Sentenced 
- Judge Orders Sims To Pay Restitution Of $86,488.15 
Shreveport, LA--United States Attorney Bill Flanagan announced today that Kerry L. Sims, 39, the former Executive Director of the Town of Homer Housing Authority, was sentenced in federal court by U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walter to spend one year and a day in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Sims was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $86,488.15.

  • Public Meeting Set To Discuss Homer Public School System - A public meeting to discuss the Homer public school system has been scheduled for Thursday, May 17 at 6:30 PM in the Homer High School auditorium. All interested persons are encouraged to attend. 
     
  • Homer High FBLA To Hold Fish Fry At Wal-Mart Saturday - The Homer High FBLA will hold a fish fry in the Wal-Mart parking lot on Saturday, May 19 from 11:30 AM till 2:30 PM. All funds raised will help finance the trip of “State First Place Winner” David Bailey who will be representing Homer High in the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida this summer. 
     
  • Homer High Pelican Dolls To Hold Car Wash/Bake Sale - The Homer High School Pelican Dolls will be holding a Car Wash and Bake Sale on Saturday, May 26 at the Wal-Mart parking lot from 9 AM till 2 PM. Tickets for the Car Wash can be purchased in advance from any Pelican Doll or on Saturday for $5. Homer Pelican license plates and Homeropoly games will also be on sale. These make great gifts!   • Pelican Football Scrimmage Set For Thursday, May 17 At 5 PM - The Homer Pelican Football team are in the middle of spring training and will play Arcadia and Bernice in a scrimmage set for Thursday, May 17 at 5 PM.

  • Hill Farm To Host Homer Chamber “After Hours” - The Homer Chamber of Commerce “After Hours” will be hosted by the Hill Farm Research Station on Monday, May 21 from 5-6 PM. Faculty of the Hill Farm will be available to informally discuss displays and answer questions. Chamber members, their employees, and the public are welcome to attend. Follow the road on the south side of the Hill Farm east from Hwy. 9 to the site. In case of rain, “After Hours” will be held at the Hill Farm office at 11959 Hwy. 9. 
     
  • Newspaper Recycling Now Available In Haynesville - Newspapers in paper bags can now be dropped off at Haynesville Town Hall in the large blue plastic receptacle for recycling. Other drop-off sites are Homer Town Hall, Homer Jr. High, and R&S Hardware in Athens. No plastic bags. Newspapers ONLY. Please do not place colored ad slicks or magazines in bins. Entry deadline is May 25, 2001. Cash awards of $100, $50, and $25 will be awarded in three categories--grades K-4, 5-8, and 9-12. Tech To Hold “Top Dawg Baseball Camp” In Homer - Louisiana Tech University will hold a “Top Dawg” Satellite Baseball Camp in Homer on Friday, May 25 through Sunday, May 27 from 9 AM to 3 PM each day. The camp will cover all skills of baseball and will be similar to the week long camps held on campus. The cost of the camp is $85.   • Summer Driver’s Education Registration Begins May 7 - Driver’s Education Classes will begin Monday, June 11, 8 AM at Homer High School. Students may register at the School Board office. Class size is limited, so early registration is encouraged. The registration fee is $180, payable by money order or cashier’s check to the Claiborne Parish School Board. Bring proof of age at time of registration. All driver’s education students must be 15 years of age on or before June 11, 2001. 
     
  • Mayfield Sports To Present “Young Lady Elite” Banquet And Ball - The Mayfield Sports Association invites you to attend the 1st Anniversary Banquet and Ball for “The Young Lady Elite” (A Christian Based Organization) designed to help young girls 13-17 make the positive transition to young ladyhood.
