Buyer Beware--Marijuana Is More Dangerous Today Than In 1960s

“Legalizing marijuana would be a big mistake,” according to State Trooper Robert Murphy. He said marijuana is much more potent today than in the late 1960s, when it was widely used as a recreational drug. The percentage of THC was then less than 1 percent. Today the levels of THC range from 15 to 36 percent. THC is the dangerous substance in marijuana that eats up and permanently destroys parts of the brain. The damage that took ten years at 1 percent THC, now takes only one week at 36 percent THC.

 

School Board Approves Plan To Lure Teachers To Claiborne Parish 
Superintendent Calls Town Meeting In Athens To Discuss School

The Claiborne Parish School Board approved a Tuition Contract with Louisiana Tech at their regular meeting Thursday, April 12. David Frye explained there was $39,490 left from the $120,000 received last year through the Class Size Reduction program established by Congress to put more teachers in the classroom. The money must be spent by September 30 and can only be spent in certain ways. An agreement negotiated between Louisiana Tech, the State Department and the School Board will allow the board to reimburse the tuition of junior or senior education majors at Louisiana Tech who will commit to teach in Claiborne Parish. For each quarter tuition paid, they must teach one semester. Students who do not fulfill the terms of the contract must pay the money back.

 

Haynesville Man Killed In Alcohol Related Auto Accident

A Haynesville man, J.C. Jackson, 60, died from injuries received in an automobile accident about 3:45 AM, Saturday, April 14, 2001. Jackson was a passenger in a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Lonnie Spivey, 47, of Dallas, TX.

 

Groundbreaking Ceremonies For New Chapel Observed At David Wade Correctional Center 
Groundbreaking ceremonies were observed at David Wade Correctional Center on Thursday, April 12 to begin the construction of a new interfaith chapel. Entry deadline is May 25, 2001. Cash awards of $100, $50, and $25 will be awarded in three categories--grades K-4, 5-8, and 9-12.
