Wade inmate George Contreras said he has gone from "drugs to hugs" since attending Kairos last year. He was born in Rhode Island. His parents had moved to the United States in the 60s from Santiago, Chile. At one time, he was the devil’s "Top Ten List." Now he is on Cloud Nine and never wants to come down. Once a very shy person, now you can't shut him up. Contreras is one of hundreds of inmates who have been changed by Kairos at David Wade Correctional Center.

Unofficial election results for the April 7 race in Claiborne Parish put J. Larry Jordan and Mickey Mayfield in a runoff for mayor of Haynesville. Jim Garner lacked only one vote to win the Police Chief race, but will face Anthony Smith in the runoff. Willie J. Young narrowly defeated Billy Kirk Jenkins in the District 10 Police Jury seat. Incumbents Alvin Kendrick, H.U. “Mutt” Slaid, and Joyce Major will serve another term on the Haynesville Town Council and will be joined by newcomer Otto Black

The Claiborne Parish Police Jury at their regular meetings April 4-5, was presented a proposal from the Town of Homer concerning the Armory Park property by Mayor David Aubrey, discussed the role of the police jury as it pertains to parish residents who live inside municipalities, considered a proposal by Bobby Joe Edmonds to share the expense to overlay the State Line Road out of Junction City, and heard a report from the Corps of Engineers concerning the clean up of three oil production sites in Claiborne Parish.

Adkins Arrested For Hit-And-Run, Charged With 2nd Degree Murder

Lee Adkins, 22, of Homer was arrested by the Louisiana State Police following a hit-and-run accident on La. 518 Saturday, April 7. Jose’ Martinez, 28, also of Homer, died from injuries received when he was hit by Adkins’ 1992 Chevy S-10 truck about 9:45 PM.

McCleskey Pleads Guilty To Killing Her Son Rebel

Lynda K. Russell, District Attorney for Shelby County, Texas said it is with deep regret that she accepted a plea from Edith McCleskey and her attorney Barry Bryan regarding the murder of her 3-year-old son, Rebel Thomas McMahon. Russell said, “McCleskey, it seems, has more rights under our current legal system than her son, whose life she took.” This tragic story was featured on Dateline NBC on Sunday, March 4.

COA And AARP To Offer 55 Alive/Mature Driving Course -
The Claiborne Council on Aging has joined with AARP to offer a 55 Alive/Mature Driving Course. The two-day course will be held on April 26-27 from 12 noon to 4 PM at the Claiborne Senior Center at 608 East 4th Street. The fee is $8. Kindergarten Round-Up will be held Tuesday-Thursday, April 24-26 at Athens High School. Parents may register 4 and 5 year olds in the school library from 9 AM - 12 PM each day. A child must be four years old on or before October 1, 2001, to register for the Pre-Kindergarten Program. A child must be five years old on or before October 1, 2001, to register for Kindergarten. Requirements for registration are the child’s official birth certificate, an up-to-date health card, and social security card. Children are not required to attend registration.

Donations are being collected for a headstone for the grave site of Daniel Peterson and Nancy Colby Peterson in the Peterson Cemetery at Pleasure Point just off White Lightning Road.
