Haynesville Voters To Elect Mayor, Council, And Police Chief

Haynesville voters will go to the polls Saturday, April 7 to select a mayor, a police chief, and four of five councilmen. Six candidates are seeking the position of mayor. They are J. Larry Jordan, Mickey Mayfield, Johnnie Meadors, Alvin Moss, DaVince Taylor, and Rex Williams. The three running for police chief are "Jim" Garner, Larry Jones, and Anthony Smith. Voters in Claiborne Parish Police Jury District 10 will select either Billy Kirk Jenkins or Willie J. Young, Sr. as their representative.

When 24-year-old inmate Trey Brown turned the corner on Pearl Street headed to the Block Party last Saturday night, he asked fellow inmate Howard Harris, "How long has it been since we came this close to reality--this close to how we lived." For Trey, it has been nine years. He was only fifteen years old when he lost his freedom. Before he came to prison, he had lost his desire to play basketball. Once he passed through the steel prison gates and they closed behind him, all he wanted was to be a kid again. Now he faced the fear of the older prison population and what they might try to do to him.

Residents Submit Petition To Oppose Changing Term Limits

The Homer Town Council discussed recent problems regarding the Armory Park facilities at their regular meeting on Monday, April 2. Mayor David Aubrey is to take the Council’s concerns to the Claiborne Parish Police Jury on April 4 and 5. Aubrey said a meeting had been held with ball organizations to discuss problems regarding the use of the Armory Park concession stand. The town received a key to the building last Friday, but there are still a number of concerns. Police Jury President Buck Tuggle informed Aubrey that the Armory Park was on Police Jury property. A lease dated February 1947 states the Town could use the property as long as it was used for recreational purposes, in exchange for use by the Jury of Town property.

Chief Investigator Chuck Talley with the Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office said the body found off Friendship Road on Saturday, March 24, has been identified as that of 49-year-old Gregory Arthur Hill of Minden. Hill had been reported missing on February 21 by his brother and wife of Shreveport with the Minden Police Department, and had not been seen since February 6.

Haynesville Council Considers Bids On New Water System, Buys Police Car

The Haynesville Town Council met February 13 in regular session. Lee Underwood with Balar and Associates of Shreveport presented bids for the new water meter replacement system. The following bids were submitted: 1) David Lawless Construction - $249,970; 2) Duo, Inc. - $219,958; and 3) Unicon Construction - $272,124.67. The Council tabled making a decision regarding the water meter replacement system until they could allow town engineer Balar & Associates to evaluate the proposals.

State Troopers To Present Program On Drugs And Drug Awareness

Captain Stanley Griffin and a team of three Louisiana State Troopers will present a program on Drug Awareness on Thursday, April 5 at 6:30 PM in the Homer High School auditorium. The program is being sponsored by the Louisiana Small Town Program Drug Committee. Teachers and parents are highly encouraged to attend to learn how to identify the drugs that are prevalent in Claiborne Parish--marijuana, crack cocaine, and methamphetamines. Troopers will also share ways to detect early warning signs of drug use in your children. Childcare services will be available at the Claiborne Boys & Girls Club for ages 5 and up. Ruston Woman Dies In Accident On La. 2

Melba Atkins, 43, of Ruston died Monday, March 26,about 11:40 AM when the Conagra pickup truck she was driving slid into the path of an 18-wheeler. Atkins was headed west on La. 2 toward Cotton Valley near the intersection of Hwy. 534. at Blackburn when her vehicle ran off the road on the left side of the highway. She over corrected causing her truck to begin sliding sideways up onto roadway, with the driver’s side headed toward the truck owned by Southeastern Freight Lines of Antioch, Tennessee. Driver of the truck, Dennis Adcock, 42, of Shreveport, saw Atkins truck leave the road and swerved to the left but was unable to avoid the accident. He received minor injuries.

The Claiborne Council on Aging has joined with AARP to offer a 55 Alive/Mature Driving Course. The two-day course will be held on April 26-27 from 12 noon to 4 PM at the Claiborne Senior Center at 608 East 4th Street. The fee is $8. Webster Parish Head Start is now recruiting and accepting applications in the Homer area for three and four year olds born before October 1. Children with special needs are given first priority. Any person desiring to enroll a child must have a certified birth certificate from the state the child was born, proof of income, child’s social security card and current immunizations. Donations are being collected for a headstone for the grave site of Daniel Peterson and Nancy Colby Peterson in the Peterson Cemetery at Pleasure Point just off White Lightning Road.
