Decomposed Body Of Black Male Found Saturday East Of Homer

Chief Investigator Chuck Talley with the Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office said they received an E-911 call Saturday morning, March 24, at 11:51 AM from an oilfield employee. Another man had discovered the decomposed remains of what appeared to be a black male in his mid to late forties while searching for tracks for the upcoming turkey season. Talley said the unidentifiable body was just off Friendship Road between Homer and Summerfield.

Former Homer Housing Authority Employee Sentenced

James S. Williams, 25, pled guilty December 14, 2000 for his role in the theft of $14,147.83 from the Homer Housing Authority. He cashed checks written to him by then executive director Kerry Sims and then split the money with Sims. Williams appeared before U.S. District Judge Donald R. Walter on Friday, March 23, and was sentenced to four months in a federally approved halfway house. He was ordered to pay a $100 victim witness fee and to make restitution of the $14,157.83.

Dan Mitchell, Three Juveniles Guilty Of 1999 Robbery Of Bill’s Dollar Store

Dan Mitchell, 21, of 812 South 4th Street in Homer was found guilty for the December 1999 robbery of Bill's Dollar Store in Homer. Three male juveniles, under the age of sixteen, were also arrested last year. Two pled guilty and were sentenced in November, 2000 to Juvenile Life. They are housed in the juvenile facility in Monroe and will be released at the age of 21. A third male juvenile is appealing his conviction.

Town Discusses Use Of Concession Stand With Ball Groups

Mayor David Aubrey called a meeting of local ball organizations to discuss his concern about the access of the small concession stand at Armory Park. The concession stand was built in 1998 by Homer Recreation Association with the permission of the Homer Town Council. The facility would be accessible by any other group using the park facility, when not in use by Homer Recreation. Aubrey said, "Public parks and public facilities must be available for use and access by the public." He was also adamant the town have a key to the building.

Poll Says 91 Percent In State Favor Protecting Groundwater
|
Dudley Hixson of Meyer, Meyer LaCroix, and Hixson (MML&H) of Alexandria gave an update on the Sparta Groundwater Study at the public hearing held Tuesday, March 20 at the Minden Civic Center. MML&H was hired by the Sparta Groundwater Conservation District to study the Sparta Aquifer and to prepare a comprehensive evaluation of the Sparta Aquifer and determine what feasible and viable alternative actions be implemented to ensure a safe, dependable, and stable water supply for the future.With evidence that present aquifers have been declining at an average of two feet per year, it is important that the State Legislature take immediate steps to protect not only our present water supply, but our future water supply as well. Block Party Set For Pearl Street

A Community Block Party will be held on Pearl Street in Homer on Saturday, March 31, from 4 PM to 7 PM. Two inmates from the Speaker’s Bureau at David Wade Correctional Center will speak to citizens and answer questions. Others who will share information are Police Chief Rodney Hollenshead on the Neighborhood Watch program, Sheriff Deputy Ken Bailey on the “D.A.R.E.” program, Sandra Maddry on the Boys & Girls Club’s “Smart Moves” program, Juvenile officer Ben Booth and Judge Jenifer Clason. Deputies Bruce Teutsch and J.T. Williams will provide a demonstration of the drug dog. The Block Party is being sponsored by the Louisiana Small Town Program Drug Committee. They invite everyone to come out and enjoy the food, entertainment, and Homer Police Department’s Officer Ollie. The LSTP Drug Committee believes the drug problem is a very important issue facing the town and will continue to work to bring educational and informational programs to the community. Anyone interested in serving on the committee is welcome Meetings are held on Wednesdays at noon at Homer City Hall.

Town Of Homer Garbage Rate Hike Goes Into Effect This Month

The Homer Town Council voted at their regular meeting in February to pass on the 5 percent rate hike received from BFI Waste Services to its customers. Effective in the March 31 billing, town residents will see an increase in their garbage rates. Backdoor rates will increase from $15.70 to $16.34, while curbside rates will go from $9.83 to $10.25. According to Town Clerk Lana Pugh, there was no increase on administrative fees to residents. BFI increased their rates by 64 cents on backdoor rates and 42 cents on curbside rates, which was passed on to the customer.
