Era Of Banking Ends At Homer National Bank Building
By Susan T. Herring, Editor, The Guardian-Journal
THESE “LADIES OF CLASS” as described by one fellow employee, (front, left to right) Alice Malray, Barbara Hood, Charolette Baker,, (back) Mary Kate Wagner, Ella Greene, and Judy Dillard, are the last to work as bank employees in the Homer National Bank building. Homer National Bank first opened its doors on January 22, 1890 and weathered such crises as the Great Depression and the dramatic changes in the 1980s, before selling to Premier Bank in 1995. When the doors close March 30, 2001, these ladies will take home more than 100 years of banking experience and will mark the end of an almost century long tradition of banking in the historic building.
Just over ten years ago, in 1990, the Homer National Bank celebrated one hundred years of uninterrupted service. At that time, Loy Weaver was President and Thomas D. Crump was Chairman of the Board. A booklet entitled “A Century of Service” published at the time, recognized the Homer National Bank as an institution that had “weathered the storms of crisis and change over these many years and has always remained the envy of the banking community,” even withstanding the Great Depression.

School Board Discusses Teacher Pay Raises
Mandatory Uniforms Approved At Athens High School

By Susan T. Herring, Editor, The Guardian-Journal
Superintendent Gary Jones told school board members he was not opposed to a pay raise for teachers, but there was a real problem with the $2,000 raise recently approved for school teachers--mainly where the money is going to come from. Jones said raises were figured according to the MFP (Minimum Foundation Program) and, with its crazy calculations, eight parishes were counted as “hold harmless.” These parishes are supposed to be poor parishes and will get more than the $2,000 allotted to the other 58 districts. Some will get as much as $3,000.
