Louisiana Gains, Claiborne Parish Loses Population In 2000

Louisiana's population grew by 249,003 people over the last ten years. In 1990 Louisiana had a total population of 4,219,973. The 2000 Census figures show the state had a total population of 4,468,976. Claiborne Parish wasn’t so lucky. Over the last ten years, the parish lost a total of 554 residents, 364 of those were in Homer. Haynesville lost 175, Athens 16, and. Junction City, La. lost 97. Lisbon showed a gain of 2 and Junction City, Arkansas picked up 47.

J.T. Taylor, President of the Claiborne Economic Development Board, addressed the Claiborne Parish Police Jury at their meeting Wednesday, March 7. He asked the jury to table the letter of resignation by Jerry Williams. In a letter dated February 28, Williams stated that Willie Young Sr. had said, in his opinion, that Billy Kirk Jenkins had "compromised his integrity by making the motion to appoint (Williams)" to the CED Board last year Williams stated Taylor had asked him to serve due to the death of George Emerson. Although Jenkins is an employee of Claiborne Electric, Williams had never discussed the issue with him, and said, "I certainly do not want my serving on this board to be an issue in the current Police Jury election."

Ball Organizations Discuss Upcoming Season And Possible Recreation Tax

Town of Homer Recreation Director Fred Young met with representatives of ball organizations on Thursday, March 8 to discuss plans and schedules for the upcoming season. Attending the meeting were Scott Suggs with Dixie Youth Baseball, Jerry Clements and Ed Watson with Homer Girls’ Softball, Robert Sanders with the Louisiana Tech Baseball Camp, Jimmy Tuggle as President of the Claiborne Parish Dixie Baseball league, Michael Wade with Mayfield Sports Association, and Bill Herring with American Legion Baseball.

Rex Williams Announces Candidacy For Mayor Town Of Haynesville

In making the announcement of his candidacy for mayor of Haynesville, Rex Williams made the following statement: "My name is Rex Williams, and I am a candidate for mayor in the town of Haynesville. My family moved here in 1975 when I was seven. I am a 1986 graduate of Haynesville High School. I have two brothers and two sisters, allof whom graduated from Haynesville. I have been married for nine years to Rebecca Sue Williams. We have four children--Taylor, 7, Cassidy, 5, Susan, 3, and Brea, 1.

Public Hearing Set For Sparta Aquifer Groundwater Study

A Public Hearing to receive comments regarding public interest in the SPARTA Aquifer, will be conducted Tuesday, March 20, 2001 in Minden at the Civic Center beginning at 7 PM. The Public Hearing will include a brief presentation of the status of the SPARTA Aquifer Study and other issues of importance to the management of water resources in North Louisiana. The hearings are open to all interested parties and your participation is encouraged. All persons desiring to speak will be required to complete an information card, which will be available at the door.
