Poverty And Bureaucracy Puts Louisiana At Bottom Of Education

Education Week, January 11, 2001 Edition, Says "Many States May Be Rushing To Hold Students And Schools Accountable For Results Without Providing The Essential Support." 
Professors Dale and Bonnie Johnson have been teaching at Homer Elementary since last August. Both took unpaid leave from Louisiana Tech University to get back in the classroom. They agree that the two main reasons Louisiana ends up on the bottom of education is poverty and bureaucracy. Louisiana has the highest percentage of students living in poverty in the United States--29.2 percent, almost one in every three children, and the red tape has squeezed the creativity of life and enthusiasm out of teaching.

 

Panel Fields Questions On Drug Problem In Homer

Last March, a team of experts with the Louisiana Small Town Program (LSTP) came to Homer and conducted a S.W.O.T. analysis, where they identified Homer’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. They found the biggest threat to the town was “drugs.” In October, a resource team was in Homer gathering information for their final report which they presented on January 11. On Thursday, March 1, the LSTP Drug Committee hosted a public forum at Homer City Hall to discuss their findings and answer questions raised by local residents.

 

Homer Town Council Takes Action On Green Estate

The Homer Town Council voted to authorize Mayor David Aubrey to proceed with action against the Green Estate. The Town Council gave Joe Green 90 days to begin cleaning up a number of properties at the December council meeting. That deadline expired on March 4. Aubrey will contact Green, who recently underwent surgery, to see what can be done to get his properties in compliance with town codes.

 

Local Resident Affected By Bomb Scare In El Dorado

Homer resident Jimmy Dean is a little skeptical about his luck these days. On Friday, February 23, when he arrived at work at the Social Security office in El Dorado, he found the parking lot full of police cars. He was directed across the street where he found his fellow employees were gathered. It seems the first person to arrive at work that morning had found what appeared to be an explosive device hanging from the doorknob. She contacted the El Dorado Police Department (EDPD).

 

Garner Announces Candidacy For Haynesville Police Chief 
Citing a deep, personlly felt, desire to contribute to the progress, welfate and success of the Town of Haynesville in the administration of its affairs, Jim Garner, a resident of Haynesville, qualified Wednesday, February 14, 2001 for the publicly elected position of Chief of Police.

 

Billy Kirk Jenkins Announces Candidacy For Police Jury District 10 
In announcing for candidacy for Police Jury District 10, Billy Kirk Jenkins said the following: "I, Billy Kirk Jenkins, have officially qualified as a candidate for Police Juror in District 10 and pray that you will vote for me April 7, 2001.

  • La. Small Town Program Drug Committee To Meet March 14 - The Louisiana Small Town Program Drug Committee will meet at noon Wednesday, March 14. The Committee will receive a presentation on the program "Smart Moves" and will discuss planning Neighborhood Block Parties. 
     
  • All Summer Ball Organizations Will Meet Thursday, March 8 - All coaches and individuals who plan to use the Town of Homer’s facilities need to attend the meeting at Homer City Hall on Thursday, March 8 at 5:30 PM. The meeting is to discuss the upcoming season and the needs at the ball fields and park areas. For more information , call Fred Young at 548-2110. 
     
  • Deadline For Entry In Anti-Litter Contest Is March 12 - The Anti-Litter Contest for Homer public schools will end Monday, March 12. Homer Elementary and Junior High School students are asked to submit posters (22” X 28”) and Homer High students will submit essays (150 words or less.) The theme of the contest is “A Litter Free Homer” and is being sponsored by the Homer Flower and Garden Club. According to Anti-Litter Chairman Clara Nelson, all entries will be judged on message, originality and neatness. Awards will be presented at a later date. 
     
  • American Legion Baseball To Host Team Bass Tournament - Claiborne Parish American Legion Baseball will host a Team Bass Tournament on Lake Claiborne on Saturday, March 10, from 6 AM to 3 PM. Entry is $60 per boat, with $10 optional Big Bass Pot. Prizes to the top five places with a payback of 80 percent. Applications are available at several local stores.   • Claiborne Cancer Support Group To Meet March 15 - The Claiborne Parish Cancer Support Group will meet at 6:30 PM on Thursday, March 15 at the WK-Claiborne Regional Health Center Conference Room. The topic will be “Nutrition and Cancer.” 
     
  • Claiborne Academy Presents “A CA Night Of Music II” - Claiborne Academy presents “A CA Night of Music II” Saturday, March 10 at 7PM in the CA gym. The first half will be song, dance, and comedic selections by high school students. The second half will be the “Miss Darling DIxie Pageant” (all male beauty pageant consisting of CA senior boys). Admission $3 adults, $2 for students. Principal Dr. David Bass and Show Director Claudia Goodwin extend an invitation for a fun-filled evening.

Is Collecting Newspapers For Recycling - Trailblazers, Inc. of Ruston is collecting newspapers for recycling and will be picking up newspapers at the following locations--Homer City Hall, Haynesville City Hall, and Athens City Hall.   • Webster Parish Head Start Now Recruiting Homer Area For 3 And 4 Year Olds - Webster Parish Head Start is now recruiting and accepting applications in the Homer area for three and four year olds born before October 1. Children with special needs are given first priority. Any person desiring to enroll a child must have a certified birth certificate from the state the child was born, proof of income, child’s social security card and current immunizations. The public hearings will include a brief presentation of the status of the Sparta Aquifer Study and other issues of importance to the management of water resources in North Louisiana.
