Haynesville Voters Say Yes To School Tax Proposal
-Bond Issue Brings Questions From Justice Department

Haynesville voters gave their overwhelming support, 74 to 26 percent, in a special tax election held Saturday, January 20. Superintendent Gary Jones said, "It was a united community effort and it's going to be an exciting product. It shows a commitment to the public education program by all segments of the community and will provide us with safe, modern, attractive classrooms for many years to come." |
Police Jury To Require Dogs To Have ID Collars And Proof Of Shots
- Jury Tables Vote On Pay Raise Till February.

Residents from Airport Loop and Bream Island complained again to the Claiborne Parish Police Jury at their January meeting. They presented a petition with over 100 names and pleaded for help with a solution to the ongoing dog problem. The Jury approved Section I of an ordinance drawn up by jury attorney Danny Newell, with the addition of a $25 fine per dog. |
Gibsland Bank In Arcadia Robbed - Homer Youth Arrested For Armed Robbery In Shreveport

The Arcadia Police Department, the Bienville Parish Sheriff's Office, and the FBI are continuing their investigation of the armed robbery of Gibsland Bank & Trust in Arcadia on Friday, January 19. Gibsland Bank teller Brenda Matthews said she was waiting on a lady when she heard someone say, "Give me your money." She looked up and saw a large black male dressed in a capelike camouflage jacket aiming a shotgun at her. She said, "Oh, my God." |
Historic Commission To Replace Trees On Square

The Homer Historic Advisory Commission met January 17 to discuss a number of items including the location of a new post office, the LSU tree grant, the wooden buildings on the square, the Louisiana Small Town grant, and to elect new officers for 2001. |

Claiborne Man Charged With Carnal Knowledge Of Juvenile
Charles Estep, 42, of Haynesville was arrested by the Minden Police Department on January 11 and charged with three counts of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. According to Minden Police Chief T. C. Bloxom, Estep is alleged to have brought a 15-year-old Homer girl to a Minden motel on several occasions for the purpose of having sexual relations with her. |

Mardi Gras Madness 2001
The Homer Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet will be held Monday, January 29 at 7 PM at Homer City Hall. This year's banquet features the famous Judge Harmon Drew as guest entertainer and "The House Next Door" swing band. Wonderful steak, shrimp, twice baked potatoes and more will be the dinner feast. - State Representative "Rick" Gallot will hold an Energy Forum on Tuesday, January 30 at 6:30 PM at Homer City Hall.
- Cancer Society To Hold St. Paddy's Day Patty Drop
- The Claiborne Parish American Cancer Society will begin selling their 2nd Annual St. Paddy's Day Patty Drop tickets on Feb. 1 at their Relay for Life meeting. The meeting will be held at Homer Memorial Hospital at 5 PM. The St. Paddy's Day will be held March 17 at the Homer High School practice football field. - Voter Canvass Cards Were MailedLast Week
- Registered voters in Claiborne Parish who received canvass cards this week with incorrect information need to bring their cards to the Registrar of Voters office at 518 East Main (by Clerk of Court office) between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM Monday - Friday, or call Patricia Sanders at 927-3332 with corrections. Anyone who has moved to another address in the parish during the past year should also call.
- New Cabins At Lake Claiborne State Park Are Open
- Ten new vacation cabins opened at Lake Claiborne State Park on January 9. Units rent for $65 with a 2-night minimum on weekends. and have everything but towels and soap. To reserve your cabin, call toll free (877) CAMP-N-LA (226-7652) from 8 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday.
- Mt. Olive Christian School To Hold Book Fair

- Childbirth Classes Offered At Homer Memorial Hospital
- Homer Memorial Hospital will hold childbirth classes beginning February 13. Classes are free and are available to anyone wishing to attend, regardless of where they plan to deliver. To register, call 92702924 and ask for the OB nurse on duty.
- St. Jude Opry Date Changed To June 23 At Homer High
- The date for the St. Jude Opry has been changed. The Opry will be held June 23 in the Homer High School auditorium.
- Haynesville QB Club To Hold Annual Superbowl Lunch
- The Haynesville Quarterback Club will hold it's annual Superbowl spaghetti lunch this Sunday, January 28. The meal will be eat in or take out between 11 AM and 1 PM in the high school cafeteria. TIckets are $5 and available from any team member, cheerleader or quarterback club member. Proceeds wil go toward state championship rings. Donations are welcome.
- Homer High Basketball Teams To Play Coushatta Here Friday
- The Homer High School Pelicans Girls and Boys will play Coushatta in a district game here Friday, January 26 beginning with a Jr. Varsity game at 5 PM. On Tuesday, January 30, the Pelicans will travel to North DeSoto and on Friday, February 2, to Lakeview at Sibley. Games start at 6 PM.
- Mt. Olive School To Form Grandparent Support Group
- Mt. Olive Christian School of Athens, LA is forming a Grandparents Support Group. Dr. Nelson Philpot will serve as chairman. An organizational meeting will be held in the school auditorium on Monday, January 29 at 7 PM. If you have a grandchild that attends Mt. - Flu Shots Are Now Available At Parish Health Unit
- Flu shots now available at the Claiborne Parish Health Unit at 624 West Main pm Fridays from 8 AM to 3 PM for high-risk individuals and for those over 65 years of age. High risk are adults and children with chronic cardiovascular or pulmonary system disorders that required medical follow-up or hospitalization last year. Those without a Medicare or Medicaid card will pay a $10 fee. For more information, call 927-6127.
- Extension Office To Hold Restricted-Use Pesticide Training
- There will be two restricted-use private applicator certification and recertificaton trainings on February 13, 2001, at the Cooperative Extension Service office on the square in Homer. The first 90-minute session will begin promptly at 10 AM and the second at 6 PM. Individuals who want to obtain a private applicator license to purchase restricte-use pesticide can sit through the 90 minutes of education information then take a certification test. - Haynesville Elementary Kicks Off PepsiNotes Program
- Haynesville Elementary, in conjunction with the Pepsi Cola Company, will collect PepsiNotes through February 1, 2001. The Pepsi Cola Company has initiated the "Share the Joy With Music" promotion in which music note symbols will be placed on specially marked packages of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, One, Frito-Lay, Funyuns, and Rold Golds, These PepsiNotes can be used by the school to redeem free music supplies. One of the goals of Haynesville Elementary is supply music stands for the school recorder band. Drop-off locations are all classrooms at Haynesville Elementary and many cooperating businesses and civic buildings throughout Claiborne Parish. - TRIAD of Claiborne wants all seniors age 65 and above, to have a smoke detector. You may also qualify if you're disabled. Having a smoke detector can mean the difference of life or death. - Homer Memorial Hospital is proud to announce the availability of MRI procedures two days a week in Homer.
The JCAHO-accredited system, provided by Alliance Imaging, is a Siemens 1.0 with a fast pack. The moblie MRI produces images as good as an on-site MRI. MRI procedures performed in Homer by Alliance Imaging specialists are read by radiologists from Diagnostic Associates; films become part of the patients permanent record and stay on-site at HMH. Appointments should be made through your physician; the ordering physician does not have to be a local physician. "We are proud to offer this service to our community.
