Heating Bills Have Tripled With No Relief In Sight
State Representative "Rick" Gallot will hold an Energy Forum on Tuesday, January 30 at 6:30 PM at Homer City Hall and on Monday, January 22 at 6:30 PM at the Ruston City Court Room in Ruston.
By Susan T. Herring,
Editor, The Guardian-Journal
Energy prices have skyrocketed in the past few months and utility companies such as Reliant Energy Arkla are passing those costs on to customers. Reliant Spokesperson Margaret Preston said there is no shortage of natural gas. Prices have gone up because the supply and demand is out of balance. "Anytime demand goes up, prices go up." The increase is due in part to this being the coldest winter on record in the U.S. in 125 years. Analysts from the American Gas Association say it could be a year to 18-months before prices level off. |
Karen Chatman Wants To Bring "Homer To Hollywood"
By Susan T. Herring,
Editor, The Guardian-Journal
"HOMEGIRL"
A child is born into this world blessed,
Already had the thought process to be the best,
In Homer, Louisiana all the way down south,
Some might say she had a silver spoon in her mouth,
Cause, why everybody else's crops ruined
Granddaddy sitting on oil like Jock Ewing
And got more land than Little House on the Prairie,
With their own school and their own cemetery
- Lyrics by J. Flexx
The "homegirl" Flexx is rapping about is Homer native Karen Chatman, great-granddaughter of William "Bill" Chatman. Karen, her sister Belinda Sloan, mother Emma Chatman, and Flexx were in Homer on Martin Luther King's birthday to meet with board members of the Claiborne Boys & Girls Club. They discussed plans to bring "Homer to Hollywood", by sponsoring a trip for one child to attend Shaqtacular 6--a day of fun and games hosted by Los Angeles Laker Shaquille O'Neal. |
