Principals Present DRA Study Results To Board

Principals of Athens, Haynesville, Homer, Pineview and Summerfield presented the Claiborne Parish School Board the results of the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) study during the regular meeting of the board on Thursday, Jan. 13.


King's Dream Becoming A Reality In Claiborne Parish

Banks, government offices, and a number of businesses in Claiborne Parish closed Monday, January 17 to honor the birthday of slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King, who was an advocate of non-violent social change during the 1950s and 1960s, was gunned down in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968.


La. Tech Head Coach Jack Bicknell To Speak
At Football Banquet

Jack Bicknell III will be the guest speaker at the Homer High School football banquet on Monday, January 24 beginning at 7 PM at Homer City Hall. Bicknell became the 30th head coach at Louisiana Tech University this past winter replacing Gary Crowton. Bicknell said, "This has been a lifelong dream come true for me. "I've been preparing for this say since I was 10 years old."


Glenn Fallin Announces Candidacy For State
District Court Judge

Glenn Fallin, a long-time resident of Bienville Parish, and a Special Assistant/Assistant District Attorney in the 2nd Judicial District for nineteen (19) years, today announced his candidacy for Judge in the 2nd District. The 2nd District of Louisiana State Court is comprised of Bienville, Claiborne and Jackson Parishes, and Fallin is a candidate for the vacant Division C judgeship.


No Agenda Items On Haynesville Council Meeting

On January 11 in the absence of City Clerk Marilyn Bush, Sue Lonadier took the minutes for the first Haynesville Town Council of 2000. With no items on the agenda, Mayor Tom Crocker allowed council members Mark Furlow, Alvin Kendrick, Kenny Killgore, Joyce Major, H.U. Slaid to present some of their community concerns.

Cannot Guarantee Homer Campus Will Remain Open

Strong, Director Of Four Vo-Tech Campuses In Webster And Claiborne Parish, Told The Lions Club On Thursday, December 9, "There Is A New Train Leaving The Station In Technical Education. I Don't Think That Train Is Going To Be Stoppable."

Club President Greg Woodall introduced guest speaker Charles Strong, Director of the Northwest Louisiana Technical College, at the noon meeting of the Lions Club on December 9. Strong introduced staff members Ginger Sult, Sharon Turley, and Diane Clark before speaking on the recent closure of the practical nursing program at the Homer campus.

  • Fred Campbell To Speak At Homer Chamber Banquet - Fred Campbell of Pine Bluff, AR, also known as "Mr. Motivation," will speak at the 35th Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet on January 31. The theme of this year's banquet is "HOMER 2000...Proud of Our Past..Building for Our Future." Tickets are $20. Tables may be reserved but only if you are seated by 6:45 PM. The deadline to purchase tickets is Wednesday, January 26.
     
  • State Fire Marshal Lifts Open Burning Restrictions - The statewide ban on open burning was lifted on January 4. Some areas are still very dry and citizens should contact local fire departments prior to conducting any burning activity. Any fire that gets out of control through negligence or malice could result in civil and criminal penalties.
     
  • Not All Louisiana Taxpayers Will Receive Tax Booklets - Louisiana taxpayers who have used alternative methods to file their income tax returns for the past two years will not receive a pre-addressed state income tax booklet. Unaddressed booklets are available at libraries, regional offices and from the IRS, or by calling toll-free (888) 829-3071. Taxpayers may also download an individual income tax return form from the State's Internet web page at www.rev.state.la.us.
     
  • D.A.R.T. In Homer Every Thursday From 9-12 AM - D.A.R.T. representatives are in Homer every Thursday from 9 AM to 12 PM to offer shelter, legal assistance and counseling for domestic violence cases. For more info call (800) 281-7885 or the 24-Hour Crisis Line at (318) 251-2255.
     
  • Town Of Homer Recreation Committee To Meet - The Recreation Committee for the Town of Homer will meet at City Hall on Monday, January 24 at 5PM to discuss recreation trails and funding.
     
  • Northwest Louisiana Legal Services At COA January 25 - The Northwest Louisiana Legal Services will visit the Claiborne Council on Aging on Tuesday, January 25. Individual professional counseling is available from an attorney on a non-fee generating case basis. Appointments can be made by calling the COA at 927-6922 or (800) 308-8951 or by calling Northwest Louisiana Legal Services at (800) 621-2488.

  • Council On Aging To Offer 55/Alive Mature Driving Course - The Claiborne Council on Aging and AARP will offer a 55/Alive Mature Driving Course on February 23 and 24 from 12:30 PM until 4:30 PM at the Claiborne Senior Center at 608 East 4th Street. The fee for the course is $10 and the last day to register is February 17. Some insurance companies may provide a discount to graduates of the course.   • Homer Football Banquet Scheduled For January 24 - Louisiana Tech's new head football coach Jack Bicknell, 1999 State Coach of the Year, will be the guest speaker at the Homer High School Football Banquet on Monday, January 24 at 7 PM at Homer City Hall. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.
     
  • Local American Cancer Society Kicks Off "Relay For Life" - The Claiborne Parish Chapter of the American Cancer Society met recently to kick off the Annual Spring Relay for Life. The fund-raiser is tentatively scheduled for April 7, 2000. Anyone may organize a team for the relay. You do not have to be affiliated with a health care organization or have had a personal experience with cancer--just be interested in helping raise money for the American Cancer Society and willing to have a great time!   • Homer Memorial Hospital To Hold Childbirth Classes - Homer Memorial Hospital is offering "Childbirth Preparation Classes" beginning January 11.
