The year 1999 was filled with news reports of the Y2K bug and urgent messages to prepare for the inevitable shutdown, power failure, or possible terrorist attacks. Businesses and governments around the world spent millions of dollars preparing for the worst. Now that all the digital clocks have rolled over, we find it was "much ado about nothing." (Includes recap of events that made headlines during the first half of 1999.)

Shannon Willis is the new Outreach Coordinator for the Domestic Abuse Resistance Team (D.A.R.T) of Lincoln and Wanda James is the Legal Advocate. Pam Dance now serves on D.A.R.T.'s Board of Directors. D.A.R.T., an organization committed to ending domestic violence, provides resources and options for victims of domestic violence.in the parishes of Bienville, Claiborne, Jackson, Lincoln, and Union.

The Town Of Homer Has Been Selected To Participate In The Louisiana Small Towns Program. A Meeting Has Been Set For January 26, 2000 With Larry Kinlaw, Executive Director Of The Governor's Office Of Rural Development.

Mayor David Aubrey met with members of the Homer Town Council in a Special Called Meeting on Thursday, December 23, 1999 to appoint the new Board of Directors for the Homer Memorial Hospital, to approve purchase of a telephone system for the Homer Police Department, and to appoint a committee to review applicants for Public Works Director.


Six Of Ten Stores In Parish Cited For Selling Alcohol
To Underage Persons

Since 1997, The Non-Compliance Rate On Alcohol Sales To Underage Persons In Louisiana Has Dropped From 56-58% to 27-28%. In Same Period, Underage Tobacco Sales In Louisiana Dropped From 75% To 6%, The Lowest Rate In The Nation.

On Friday, December 10, 1999, agents from the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control (ATC) were in Claiborne Parish conducting a "compliance check." Six of ten local establishments checked were cited for "selling alcohol to a person under 21." Clerks at Dixie Mart I, Mini-Mart, Brookshire's, Texaco Food Mart in Homer and C.J. Liquor and Dixie Mart IV in Athens were issued citations for court appearances on January 4, 2000.

  • Claiborne Parish Police Jury, School Board To Meet - The Claiborne Parish Police Jury will meet at 10 AM Tuesday, January 11 and Wednesday, January 12 in the board room at 514 East Main.
        The Claiborne Parish School Board will meet at 7 PM Thursday, January 13, 2000 at 415 East Main in Homer.
     
  • Local American Cancer Society Kicks Off "Relay For Life" - The Claiborne Parish Chapter of the American Cancer Society met recently to kick off the Annual Spring Relay for Life. The fundraiser is tentatively scheduled for April 7, 2000. Interested persons are encouraged to attend the next planning meeting on Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at 5 PM in the conference room of the Homer Memorial Hospital. Anyone may organize a team for the relay. You do not have to be affiliated with a health care organization or have had a personal experience with cancer. Just be interested in helping raise money for the American Cancer Society and willing to have a great time! For more information, call Gaye Brunson at 927-2024.
     
  • Homer Memorial Hospital To Hold Childbirth Classes - Homer Memorial Hospital is offering "Childbirth Preparation Classes" beginning January 11. Homer Memorial HospitalClasses are free and are open to anyone wishing to attend, regardless of where they plan to deliver.   • Homer Football Banquet Scheduled For January 24 - The Homer High School Football Banquet will be held at 7 PM Monday, January 24 at the Homer City Hall. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the door.
     
  • Homer High Basketball This Week - Friday, January 7 - Pels play North DeSoto there at 6 PM.
        Tuesday, January 11 - Pels will play Lakeview there. Game time 6 PM.
     
  • Triad Of Claiborne Taking Smoke Detector Application - The Claiborne Parish SALT Council is accepting applications from persons age 60 or older who are on a low income and cannot afford to buy a smoke detector.
