On Term Limits

Former Town Selectman Bob Glenn told the Homer Board of Selectman at a public hearing on Thursday, November 23, they should not overturn the ordinance which provides term limits for the Mayor and Selectmen. Referring to objections previously made by Councilman Scott "Doc" Roberson, Glenn said, "Term limits have absolutely nothing to do with throwing anybody out of office, anymore than you throw somebody off the hospital board."

Sparta Aquifer Problems Prompt Look At Lake Claiborne
As Resource

First Woodlands Bank President Loy Weaver invited a group of citizens to the LSU Hill Farm Research Station Tuesday, November 21 to discuss problems with the Sparta Aquifer and ways to utilize the great assets in Claiborne Parish, particularly the use of Lake Claiborne as an economic engine. Following an open forum conducted by Dr. Nelson Philpot, two engineers and one economic recruiter spoke on the possibilities of using water from the lake to supply much needed water to neighboring communities.

Town Releases Eight Residents To Parish Water System
The Council voted to table A vote on Ordinance No. 842 To remove term limits on the mayor and selectman until the January 8 meeting to allow All Town Selectman to be present.

The Council granted a petition by eight parish residents to be released from the Town Water System to the Central Claiborne Water System. The petition signed by Jerry Andrews, Joe Dean, Lilly Rogers, Dalton Pugh, Natalie Lickie, Kim Sims, Brian Edwards, and the Po Boy Hunting Club stated "with the best efforts by the Town Water Department, the pressure is difficult to maintain at 30 to 40 lbs."


Faulk Killed In Head-On Collision, Other Driver Charged With DWI
Thomas Nick Faulk, 41, of Homer, was killed in a head-on collision about 11:48 PM on a hill crest at the intersection of Isaac Creek Road and Jones Road, just off La. 9 south of Homer, according to Trooper Chris Johnson with the Louisiana State Police.


Stachybotrys Fungus Found At Homer Memorial Has Been Removed

A fungus known as "stachybotrys" was found in several rooms at Homer Memorial Hospital about a month ago, causing hospital officials to close down one wing of the hospital. After receiving several complaints from hospital employees, the hospital's infection control nurse took a culture of mold on several ceiling tiles to have them tested. On November 7, Robert Storment with Altec Environmental Consultants was contacted.

Man Gets Arm Caught In Machinery During Oil Spill Cleanup

Ricky Garrett, 26, of Houma, La. supervisor of Oil Mop, Inc. was injured Sunday, December 3, when his arm was pulled into a mop skimmer during the clean up operation of a crude oil spill. About 10:45 PM on Friday, November 24, a 20-inch Mid-Valley pipeline, operated by Sun Pipe Line, ruptured spilling approximately 2,000 barrels of oil into an area in and around the Clampitt Pond, about five miles east of Haynesville.

Christmas Festival & Parade Set For Saturday, December 9
Homer's Annual Christmas Festival and Parade is set for this Saturday, December 9. Entertainment on the square from 11 AM to 4 PM. Performers include Nina Sanders, Dick Dorrell, Barry Roberts, Chris Sherrill, Johnny McDaniel, Joey White, Lil Sanders, First Ebenezer Church choir, Mike Calhoun, Dump Hatter, Jerry Thompson, and Joanne Lay's students. The Christmas Parade will begin at 4 PM. Chairman Buddy Pixley said they had 28 parade entries, with "Miss Louisiana 2000" Faith Jenkins serving as Grand Marshall. Lots of fun, food and craft booths, and Boy Scout Chili Challenge from 8 AM-12 noon..

  • Boy Scouts Need Cooks For Saturday Chili Cook-Off - Troop 72 will host the first annual North Louisiana Championship Boy Scout Chili Challenge on Saturday, December 9 from 8 AM-12 noon. Cooks can register from 8-9 AM for a $17 fee. Chili must be turned in by noon. Winners will be announced at grandstand. Taste tickets will be sold for $2.   • Duck Hunting Regulations On Lake To Be Discussed - A public meeting will be held to discuss Lake Claiborne duck hunting regulations on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 6:30 PM in the Homer Fire Station conference room. All interested are invited to attend.

  • Haynesville Elementary Plans Christmas Program - The annual all-school Christmas program will be held at Haynesville Elementary on Monday, Dec. 18 at 9:30 AM in the auditorium. Each Pre-K-4 class will present two musical selections, plus the 4th grade recorder band, slide presentation, 2nd grade rhythm band, some teachers, the sign language perfomance of Merry Christmas with Love, and a visit from Santa. The Pepsi Cola Company has initiated the "Share the Joy With Music" promotion in which music note symbols will be placed on specially marked packages of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, One, Frito-Lay, Funyuns, and Rold Golds, These PepsiNotes can be used by the school to redeem free music supplies.
