Rebel's Story To Be Featured On NBC's Dateline In February
The tragic story of 3-year-old Rebel McCleskey will be one of more than thirty tragic interactions between children and guns to be featured on NBC's Dateline in late February 2001. Rebel died March 2, 2000 at his home in Shelbyville, Texas after being shot at close range with a 12-gauge shotgun. Rebel's mother, former Homer resident Edith McCleskey, was arrested and charged with the murder. She remains in jail in Center, Texas without bail. Just days before the murder, Edith had lost custody of Rebel and was to turn him over to his father on Friday, March 3. Trial is set to begin sometime late January or early February, 2001. Correspondent Tom Brokaw will be the host for the Dateline show, which will conclude with a debate-style segment between Charlton Heston and gun control activist and congresswoman, Carolyn McCarthy. |
Pair Descendants Attended Homer's Sesquicentennial Celebration
By Susan T. Herring,
Editor, The Guardian-Journal
The Homer High School Drama Club, under the direction of Denice Owens, presented four short performances of a mock courtroom drama during the Town of Homer's Sesquicentennial Celebration Saturday, November 11. The drama was based loosely on a fictionalized account of former Homer resident Robert Henry Pair. Pair was born in Claiborne Parish and lived in Homer prior to the Civil War. Sometime around 1860, according to family stories, Pair shot two men, the sons of a local judge and fled to Texas. For many years, family members thought this gunfight had taken place in Houma, Louisiana and that Pair was actually the French name Pare' (pronounced Pa RAY). |

Love, Hospitality, Warmth Describe The Newell Law Firm
- The Former Tatum Home To Be Featured On Tour Of Homes
Love, hospitality, warmth and light aptly describe the ambience of the Tatum House. Susan Hays remembers her childhood home as a place where the doors were always open, her friends were always welcome, and the smells of good cooking always come from the kitchen. The gracious and informal atmosphere which characterized the house stemmed from the dispositions of its owners, Dr. and Mrs. S.A. Tatum, Sr., both descended from pioneer Claiborne Parish families. The Tatums built their home in 1938 on the lot formerly occupied by the residence of Mrs. Tatum's grandparents, Richard White Collier and his wife Lula Taylor Collier. Prior to the construction of the Tatum home, the Colliers' Victorian cottage was moved to a location on upper North Main Street where it still stands and is occupied as a residence by Mrs. George H. Ford. |
