Homer Man Dies Of Gunshot Wound To Neck

A 43-year-old Homer man died Thursday, November 8, after being shot in the neck with a 12 gauge shotgun. The Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office received an E-911 call at 9:08 PM from a pay phone outside the Texaco Hardee Mart, across from Linder Motor Lodge. Delephine Thompson, 37, of Cotton Valley told the dispatcher that Bruce E. Monroe had been shot and needed an ambulance. Police Chief Rodney Hollenshead dispatched a unit to the scene until Sheriff’s deputies could arrive. Monroe was pronounced dead at his residence by Assistant Coroner Clint Butler.

 

Homer Council Refuses To Hear Police Chief 
New Reapportionment Plan Approved At Special Meeting

The Homer Town Council adjourned a Special Called Meeting Monday, November 11 before allowing Police Chief Rodney Hollenshead to speak concerning an issue he felt should be discussed in Executive Session. Hollenshead said, “I think you are making a bad mistake as the body that governs this town by not allowing me to have my say at this council.”

 

Haynesville Council Sells Land To Fowler Transportation 
Haynesville Mayor Mickey Mayfield read a letter of intent by Fowler Transportation to purchase 10.1 acres of land located at the Haynesville Industrial Development Park from the Town at their regular meeting October 9. At a Special Called Meeting on October 26, the Council voted to proceed with the contract. Fowler plans to develop the land and open a trucking company and have already begun to move some dirt.

 

School Board Calls Election For Tax Renewals In January

Gary Jones told the Claiborne Parish School Board at their regular meeting November 8 that the upcoming sales tax renewal on Saturday, November 17 was crucial for teacher salaries and to continue providing needed funding for educational programs. If the renewal does not pass, teachers in Claiborne Parish will be forced to take a $2,000 pay cut. The Board voted to call another Special Election for January 19, 2002 for the purpose of renewing the maintenance tax for the following school districts: District 1 (Athens), District 13 (Homer) and District 26 (Pineview).

 

Coleman Pushes For One Cent Sales Tax For Parish Bridges 
Jurors Review Roads Proposed For 2002 Blacktop Program

Gene Coleman presented a resolution to the Claiborne Parish Police Jury at their November 8 meeting to approve calling an election for a one cent sales tax for twenty years to be used for making repairs to about 19 deteriorating bridges in the parish.. Road Superintendent Dean Busby said the state requires inspections on those bridges once or twice a year and they are posted with proper tonnage signs.

  • Arcadia Satellite Rehab To Hold Blood Drive Nov. 23 - Arcadia Satellite Rehab and Lifeshares Blood Center will hold a Blood Drive on Friday, November 23 from 11 AM - 3 PM at the Homer Wal-Mart. The goal is 20. Every donor will receive refreshments and either a T-shirt or a free cholesterol check. 
     
  • Pecans Have Arrived For Annual Homer Lions Club Sale - A fresh crop of Bergeron pecans arrived at the Homer Police Station this week for the annual Homer Lions Club promotion. Bags are 12 oz. and sell for $6. Contact the Homer Police Station at 927-4000 or any Lions Club member for your pecans. Chairman Rodney Hollenshead reminds everyone funds raised from the sell of the pecans are used for various charities supported by the Lions Club, such as the Eye Bank and Crippled Children’s Camp.

  • Account Set Up At Hibernia Bank For Jo Lynn Bellew - An account has been set up at Hibernia National Bank in the name of Jo Bellew to help defray medical costs and other expenses incurred during her lengthy illness. Donations can be made at Hibernia National Bank, the Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office or the Claiborne Parish Detention Center. 
     
  • Absentee Voting Begins Monday For November 17 Election - Absentee voting for the November 17 election for Claiborne Parish School Board Sales Tax Renewal will be held Monday, November 5, through Saturday, November 10 at the Registrar of Voters office at 518 East Main. These funds were received from the USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program to assist small businesses and provide for jobs in Homer. Loan preferences will be made on the basis of job creation.   • Smithsonian WW II Traveling Exhibit To Be On Display At Museum Till Nov. 21 - The Smithsonian WW II Traveling Exhibit Produce for Victory: Posters on the American Home Front, 1941-1945 will be on display at the Ford Museum until Wednesday, November 21. A host of special programming has been held at the museum in connection with the exhibit. Interesting exhibits concerning the Claiborne Parish Home Front and the soldiers of Claiborne Parish have been added to the exhibit to help explain the role Claiborne Parish played during this time. This was a time in American history when the nation was united in a single goal--VICTORY! The men, women and children in Claiborne Parish did whatever necessary to bring about that end. The display at the left features photos of local WW II veterans. Visitors are invited to the musuem to see this very special exhibit. Some parish schools have brought students to musuem to see the exhibit. Linda Volentine would like to encourage other schools to take advantage of this unique opportunity. Museum hours are 9 AM-12 Noon and 1:30-4 PM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 2-4 PM on Sunday. Special times can be set up. Admission rates are $3 for Adults, $1 for Children, and $5 for Family.
