Haynesville Council Questioned About Missing Funds, Town Auditor

The Haynesville Town Council was questioned about recent years' findings of town auditor Mike Rabinowitz at their regular meeting on Tuesday, October 10. Local resident William Maddox suggested changing auditors, but the board chose to take no action at this time.

Valhalla Campground Raises Money For Abused Children

Curtis Nelson, owner of Valhalla Motorcycle Campground in Homer, and friend Pat Hightower, presented a $500 check to Greg Heinritz last Saturday, October 21. Heinritz and his wife Cyndi are building a children's facility in their hometown of Oden, Arkansas to house up to fifteen needy children.

Canadian On "World Tour" Makes Stop In Homer

Canadian Rene' Ouellet is traveling around the world--on a bicycle. The fifty-year old adventurer from Quebec started his "world tour" just over two months ago, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Although he presently has no sponsor, he wants his trip to be of benefit to others. He loves sports and believes young people today are not active enough. Obesity is on the rise and is causing health problems in both children and adults. Perhaps his trip could serve to inspire people around the world to get in shape.

Railroad Enters Suit Against KPMG Accounting Firm
A petition issued on behalf of The Louisiana and North West Railroad Company has been submitted into the Second Judicial District Court of Claiborne Parish. The petition, dated September 8, 2000, is a direct result of a guilty plea entered by former railroad employee Jeanette H. Harmon on mail fraud, and scheme and artifice to defraud, dating back as far as 1995.


Halloween To Be Observed Tuesday
Homer Police Chief Rodney Hollenshead said Halloween will be observed Tuesday, October 31 in Homer. All Homer Police officers will be on duty. Several will be handing out candy to "trick-or-treaters" between 6 PM and 8 PM in front of the Homer Police Station. Hollenshead encourages children to "Trick-or-Treat" early so they can be home by 9 PM. Children should walk in groups, wear reflective clothing, be careful crossing the street, exit cars on the sidewalk side, go only to houses with porch lights on, and have parents check their candy before eating. Motorists should drive slowly and watch for children crossing the street.


The Thomas/Woodall House To Be Featured On Tour Of Homes
The Thomas/Woodall house was built in 1946 by Mr. and Mrs. William Thomas (Dot and Bill). Dr. and Mrs. Harry Woodall (Harry and Mary) are the present residents. The house has been "home" to five generations. To give the history of the house is to give a history of her families.

  • Homer High Basketball To Sell Spaghetti Plates Friday - The Homer High School Basketball Team will sponsor a spaghetti supper this Friday, October 27 from 5-7 PM at the Homer High cafeteria, prior to the Homecoming Game. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door for both dine-in and take-outs. Come out and support Homer High School Basketball!
     
  • Homer Memorial Hospital To Host Diabetes Seminar - November is National Diabetes Month. On Tuesday, November 14 at 6:30 PM, the Homer Memorial Hospital will host an informational seminar in the hospital conference room addressing signs and symptoms of diabetes and diabetic foot care. This meeting is free of charge and open to the public.
     
  • American Legion Auxiliary To Meet Monday, Oct. 30 - The American Legion Auxiliary will meet Monday, October 30 at 5:30 PM at the Claiborne Parish Library.

  • Claiborne Academy FCA To Honor Local Veterans - The Claiborne Academy Fellowship of Christian Athletes will host its annual Veterans' Day observance on Friday, November 10. All veterans are invited to attend. The program will be begin at 11 AM with a flag raising ceremony, then move to the gym for the program, followed by lunch for veterans and spouses.   • Absentee Voting Will Be Held October 26-31 - Registrar of Voters Patricia Sanders said absentee voting for the November 7 election will be held from Thursday, October 26 through Tuesday, October 31, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM everyday, except Sunday when they will be closed.
     
  • Haynesville Tors Will Play Sarepta At Home Friday - The Haynesville Golden Tornado will play Sarepta at home Friday, October 27. Kickoff at 7:00 PM.

  • American Legion Waller-Bond Post 161 To Dedicate Memorial - This Veteran's Day, November 11, 2000 at 9:30 AM, American Legion Post 161 of Haynesville will dedicate a Memorial Wall to veterans of WWI, WWII, Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Lebanon/Granada, Kosovo, Bosnia, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War and the Persian Gulf War. Applications are being accepted with a $25 fee to cover the cost of the stainless steel plate and engraving.   • Conservation District Essay Contest For 8th Grade Students - The D'Arbonne Soil and Water Conservation District is sponsoring an Essay Contest for all 8th grade students in Union, Lincoln, Claiborne, and Quachita Parish. This year's theme is "Community Waters". Essays must be neatly written in contestant's own handwriting and will be judged on content, composition, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness. The first place winner will receive $50. Winning essays will be submitted to statewide competition. Schools will be receiving resource material and guidelines.   • First Baptist Church of Homer To Sponsor "Hallelujah Night" - On October 31 from 6-8 PM, the First Baptist Church of Homer will sponsor its first annual "Hallelujah Night" in the Family Life Center. Parents, bring your preschoolers through 6th grade for food, fun, and fellowship in a Christian environment. Non-scary costumes (no witches, ghosts, vampires, etc.) Bring your carved pumpkins by 6:30 PM to be judged for a prize.   • Annual Christmas Festival In Homer Set For Saturday, December 9 - Chairman Buddy Pixley met August 23 with the several interested persons to begin making plans for this year's Christmas Festival planned for Saturday, December 9. The Committee discussed plans for the parade, entertainment, food booths, and possibly a Christmas Decoration contest. As done in the past, members discussed allowing various groups--marching bands, cheerleaders, dance lines, twirling groups, etc--to compete for trophies prior to the parade. The Festival will also include all-day entertainment and a variety of food booths.
