Housing Authority Hires Secretary To Replace Sims As Executive Director

Sonja Hamilton, secretary under former Executive Director Kerry Sims, was named executive director by the Homer Housing Authority (HHA) Board of Directors at a special called meeting Thursday, October 12. Hamilton will serve a six month probationary period and must work independently with no assistance from the commissioners. She must also pass the state test. |
D.A.R.T. To Hold Candlelight Vigil For Victims Of Domestic Abuse

On Monday, October 23, the Domestic Abuse Resistance Team (D.A.R.T.) will erect fifteen "Silent Witness" silhouettes, symbolizing the twelve women and three children killed as a result of domestic violence in the parishes of Lincoln, Union, Claiborne, Jackson, and Bienville. On Thursday, October 26, a Candlelight Vigil will be held in the Claiborne Parish Courthouse at 6:30 PM. |
Homer Bypass Delayed Again, Bid Date Moved To July 2006

Construction of the Homer Bypass has been delayed once again. According to Bruce Easterly, District Administrator with Department of Transportation (DOTD) in Bossier City, bids on the project have been pushed back to July 2006. The reason he says is lack of funding. "The money is the secret. If the money is there, the project can be let within a year." |
Operation Christmas Child Shares The Love Of Jesus

Last year, over 3 million shoeboxes were collected through Operation Christmas Child (OCC). On Wednesday, October 15, Arkansas state coordinator Faye Pullig told the Homer Ministerial Alliance that 16,276 shoeboxes were shipped from the regional collection site in Magnolia, Arkansas last year--up from 3,500 in 1998. |

Louisiana's Oldest Community Choir To Perform At Sesquicentennial
The Shreveport-Bossier Choral Ensemble, Louisiana's oldest continuing community choir, has been performing for local audiences ever since 1927. Through exhaustive research, it also appears to be the oldest active women's chorus in the United States. The 49 ladies who make up the Choral Ensemble work hard to bring quality performances to their audiences and they will be in Homer Saturday, November 11 to perform at Homer's Sesquicentennial at 6:30 PM at City Hall. |

- Homer High School Homecoming Parade Set For October 26
- Homer High School's Homecoming will be Friday, October 27 against the Green Oak Giants. The Homecoming Parade will be held Thursday, October 26, beginning at 5:30 PM. Parade entrants will begin lining up at 4:30 PM on Bonner Street. This is Homer High School's centennial year and the Student Council encourages Homer High alumni to enter a float. - First Baptist Church of Homer To Sponsor "Hallelujah Night"
- On October 31 from 6-8 PM, the First Baptist Church of Homer will sponsor its first annual "Hallelujah Night" in the Family Life Center. Parents, bring your preschoolers through 6th grade for food, fun, and fellowship in a Christian environment. Non-scary costumes (no witches, ghosts, vampires, etc.) Bring your carved pumpkins by 6:30 PM to be judged for a prize. - TRIAD of Claiborne wants all seniors age 65 and above, to have a smoke detector. You may also qualify if you're disabled. Having a smoke detector can mean the difference of life or death. - Annual Christmas Festival In Homer Set For Saturday, December 9 - Chairman Buddy Pixley met August 23 with the several interested persons to begin making plans for this year's Christmas Festival planned for Saturday, December 9. The Committee discussed plans for the parade, entertainment, food booths, and possibly a Christmas Decoration contest. As done in the past, members discussed allowing various groups--marching bands, cheerleaders, dance lines, twirling groups, etc--to compete for trophies prior to the parade. The Festival will also include all-day entertainment and a variety of food booths.

- WK Claiborne Health Center To Offer Free Bone Screen
- The Willis Knighton Claiborne Regional Health Center will be offering free bone screening for ladies over 50 years of age. The office is registering patients now at 927-1110. There are only about 85 -90 slots available to receive the free health scan. Just as testing your blood pressure and cholesterol can help doctors initiate preventatives and treatments for heart attacks and strokes, bone scans can help assess whether patients may need medications to prevent or treat osteoporosis. One in every two women will fracture in their lifetime due to osteoporosis. This is why it is so important that every woman over 50 be evaluated and the reason the Health Center is conducting this free service to the community.

- This Veteran's Day, November 11, 2000 at 9:30 AM, American Legion Post 161 of Haynesville will dedicate a Memorial Wall to veterans of WWI, WWII, Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Lebanon/Granada, Kosovo, Bosnia, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War and the Persian Gulf War. Applications are being accepted with a $25 fee to cover the cost of the stainless steel plate and engraving.
