Haynesville To Decide Fate Of Schools In January
- School Board Adopts Parishwide Uniform Policy

The Claiborne Parish School Board Passed A Resolution In Support Of The Stelly Plan, Which Is Amendments 2 And 3 On The November 7 Ballot. If Both Amendments Pass, Teacher Salaries In Louisiana Will Be Raised To The Southern Regional Average.
The Claiborne Parish School Board, at their regular meeting October 5, unanimously approved the proposal presented by Haynesville school board members--A.J. Coleman, Kent Toney, and A.L. Guinn, to renovate and construct new school buildings in Haynesville. The board approved calling a special election January 20, 2001 for $8.1 million general obligation bonds in School District 11. The proposal should require an ad valorem tax of 35 mills over 20 years, with an interest rate of not more than 8 percent per annum. |
State Police Investigating Missing Funds In Haynesville

Lee Harrell, Detective Sargeant with the North District Detective Division of the State Police, said his staff met with former Haynesville town clerk Marilyn Bush and her attorneys on Friday, October 6. He said Bush was cooperating with the investigation into the town's missing funds uncovered by the town auditor Mike Rabinowitz, while conducting the annual audit for the town. |

Ruston Attorney Richard J. "Rick" Gallot, Jr. is headed to Baton Rouge Tuesday, October 17 to be sworn in as State Representative in District 11. Gallot won the election last Saturday, knocking three other candidates out of a runoff election for the seat held by the late Representative Pinkie Wilkerson. Gallot said he will spend the day in orientation while at the state capitol and begin getting acquainted with his new duties. |
Jury Receives Offer For Help In Rural Areas Without Water

J. W. Hellume with Rural Community Service attended the regular work session of the Claiborne Parish Police Jury on October 5, and offered his assistance in planning, developing, and funding those areas in the parish presently not connected to a water system. Hellume said he would work with the Jury to secure funds to help provide water to approximately 150 to 200 homes in the parish. |

- Pelican Dolls To Hold Baked Potato Supper Friday
- The Homer High School Pelican Dolls will be selling "Baked Potato Plates" on Friday, October 13, from 4:30-6:30 PM, prior to the football game between Homer and North DeSoto. Tickets are $4 and include a "large" baked potato with your choice of butter, cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, ham, green onions, chili, jalapenos. Plate also includes homemade dessert and tea.
- New Hope Church To Host Basketball Tournament
- The New Hope Church Family will sponsor a basketball tournament on Saturday, October 14, and Sunday, October 15 beginning at 12 noon at the Homer Jr. High gym. Admission to the game will be $3 for adults and $2 for children 17 and under. For more info call 927-4777 or 927-5209.
- Haynesville Quarterback Club Fund-raiser Oct. 14
- The Haynesville Quarterback Club is holding its' annual fund-raiser, The Tornado Frolics on Saturday, October 14 at the Claiborne Parish Fair Barn in Haynesville. The annual cakewalk, rides and games will begin at 5 PM followed by entertainment. The auction will begin at 7 PM. Everyone is welcome for a good time of food, fun, and entertainment.

- Claiborne Academy will hold its annual Book Fair October 10-17 in the school's library. - Homer High School Homecoming Parade Set For October 26
- Homer High School's Homecoming will be Friday, October 27 against the Green Oak Giants. The Homecoming Parade will be held Thursday, October 26, beginning at 5:30 PM. Parade entrants will begin lining up at 4:30 PM on Bonner Street. This is Homer High School's centennial year and the Student Council encourages Homer High alumni to enter a float. - On October 31 from 6-8 PM, the First Baptist Church of Homer will sponsor its first annual "Hallelujah Night" in the Family Life Center. Parents, bring your preschoolers through 6th grade for food, fun, and fellowship in a Christian environment. Non-scary costumes (no witches, ghosts, vampires, etc.) Bring your carved pumpkins by 6:30 PM to be judged for a prize. - WK Claiborne Health Center To Offer Free Bone Screen
- The Willis Knighton Claiborne Regional Health Center will be offering free bone screening for ladies over 50 years of age. The office is registering patients now at 927-1110. There are only about 85 -90 slots available to receive the free health scan. Just as testing your blood pressure and cholesterol can help doctors initiate preventatives and treatments for heart attacks and strokes, bone scans can help assess whether patients may need medications to prevent or treat osteoporosis. One in every two women will fracture in their lifetime due to osteoporosis. This is why it is so important that every woman over 50 be evaluated and the reason the Health Center is conducting this free service to the community.

The Committee discussed plans for the parade, entertainment, food booths, and possibly a Christmas Decoration contest. As done in the past, members discussed allowing various groups--marching bands, cheerleaders, dance lines, twirling groups, etc--to compete for trophies prior to the parade. The Festival will also include all-day entertainment and a variety of food booths.

- This Veteran's Day, November 11, 2000 at 9:30 AM, American Legion Post 161 of Haynesville will dedicate a Memorial Wall to veterans of WWI, WWII, Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Lebanon/Granada, Kosovo, Bosnia, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War and the Persian Gulf War.
