Cain Seeks Executive Order From Governor To Protect Aquifers

Those were the words of Senator James David Cain, Chairman of the Committee on Environmental Quality, as he spoke to several hundred people gathered at a public hearing in Ruston last Thursday. |

El Dorado One Of Five "Critical Water Areas" In Arkansas

In 1996, five counties in South Arkansas were declared "Critical Water Counties." They were Bradley (Warren), Calhoun (Hampton), Columbia (Magnolia), Ouachita (Camden), and Union (El Dorado). Several concerned citizens attended the LSU AgCenter Water Meeting at Homer City Hall Monday, September 18 to hear Rhonda Martin explain some of the problems facing El Dorado and what they are doing to correct it. |

Homer-Mayfield School Reunion Wants 10 Acres In Mayfield Park
Louisiana Small Town Program Team To Be In Homer October 15-20

James Ridley, representing the Homer-Mayfield School Reunion Association, presented the Homer Town Council, at their September 11 meeting, with a proposal for about ten acres of land in the Mayfield Park to construct a $750,000 multi-purpose building. He proposed a price of $1 per acre or the fair market value. If the purchase is not possible, they want to lease the land for an initial period of not less than 99 years. |

Parish Teachers To Get Raise
Board Members Adopt 2000-2001 Budget
Claiborne Parish School Board members gave teachersand administrators a $500 raise while adopting the budget for 2000-2001 during their regular meeting Thursday, Sept. 14. The board also included a $200 raise for support personnel. |

Claiborne Parish Fair Comes To Haynesville September 24
School and club booths will begin setting up in the North End of the Claiborne Parish Fair Barn in Haynesville between 1 PM-4 PM Sunday, September 24, along with general exhibits, poultry entries, and livestock. Judging will begin with the rabbit show at 6 PM on Monday, September 25. All entries but livestock will be judged Tuesday, September 26. The Claiborne Parish Fair Parade and Carnival will be 4 PM on Tuesday. School Group Days for Daycare and Pre-K-3 will be 8:30 Am - Noon on Tuesday and for Grades 4-6 only, from 8:30 AM - Noon on Wednesday. Arm bands can be purchased at school or city hall and will be good on select days. The Carnival will open at 5 PM on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Entertainment will include the Firehouse Jammers and the State Farm Gospel Singing. "Cooking with Rand and Nancy Killgore" will be Thursday morning. Come enjoy the fun! - Homer Community Blood Drive Set For September 23
- Just Give It! Blood can save 4 lives, is usable for 42 days, and can be given every 2 months! Several local churches in conjunction with LifeShare Blood Centers will sponsor the Homer Community Blood Drive on Saturday, September 23 from 9 AM to 1 PM. The Drive will be held at the Homer Church of Christ Annex Building on West Main. Refreshments and a free T-shirt will be given to every donor.

- Claiborne Academy has an open date Friday night. The Rebels will be back on the field against Riverdale Academy on Friday, September 29 at Rebel Stadium. Game time is 7:30 PM.
- Homer High Cheerleaders Hold Mini-Camp Saturday
- Homer High Cheerleaders will hold a mini-camp for students K-8th grade on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 9 AM-3 PM at the HHS basketball gym. Students will learn basic cheerleading skills, including a chant, cheer, and a spirit dance. All participants will receive a pair of Homer pom-poms and will perform pregame at the Homer/Loyola football game on September 29. Cost is $20 per student and lunch will be provided. - CA Invites Former Varsity Cheerleaders To Cheer
- The Claiborne Academy Varsity Cheerleaders wish to invite all former CA Varsity Cheerleaders to cheer on the sidelines for this year's Homecoming football game on Friday, October 6, when the CA Rebels take on the Tallulah Trojans at 7:30 PM at Rebel Stadium. Former cheerleaders may wear any CA cheerleader uniform or a wind suit in school colors. Again this year, those who participate will be eligible to enter a drawing for a basket of CA cheerleader memorabilia. Returning cheerleaders should report to the sidelines before the game to sign in for recognition at some point during the game and also to register for the drawing. Varsity Cheerleaders Carrie Michael and Keelie Ware will be in charge of registration. All former cheerleaders are asked to participate in the pre-game spirit line and to cheer on the sidelines until halftime.

- American Legion Post 73 To Meet September 28
- American Legion Post No. 73 is meeting September 28 at the Claiborne Parish Library at 7 PM. If you know where the Legion flags are being stored please contact Carol Jones at 927-3549. They are needed by September 28 for the Claiborne Parish Fair. The Legion welcomes all eligible Claiborne Parish veterans and their family. A Junior Auxiliary for Sons of the American Legion is now being formed.
- Historic Homes Needed For Sesquicentennial Tour of Homes
- If you own one of Homer's historic homes and would be willing to share it with the community in conjunction with Homer's Sesquicentennial Celebration, please contact Susan Herring at 927-3541, Virginia Furlow at 927-6679, or Chloe Ellen Watson at 927-6957 as soon as possible. The tour of homes is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, November 25 and currently includes three private homes and one church building, however, additional tour locations would greatly benefit the event. Homes need not be large or ornate nor must they be freshly refurbished, they need only to be a part of Homer's history, of days gone by. - Homer Memorial Hospital Schedules Breast Health Awareness Seminar
- Homer Memorial Hospital has scheduled a Breast Health Awareness seminar for Tuesday, October 3 at 6:30 PM in the hospital conference room. Information will be shared on the importance of breast health awareness, the proper way to perform monthly self-exam, and tips toward getting the best mammogram possible.
Available for questions will be physicians, mammography technologists, and breast cancer survivors. The program is open to women of all ages, and you do not have to be a cancer patient to attend. Door prizes donated by local merchants will be awarded. In conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Homer Memorial Hospital will offer reduced-fee screening mammograms during the month of October. - American Legion Waller-Bond Post 161 To Dedicate Memorial
- This Veteran's Day, November 11, 2000, the American Legion Post 161 of Haynesville will dedicate a Memorial Wall to veterans of WWI, WWII, Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Lebanon/Granada, Kosovo, Bosnia, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War and the Persian Gulf War. The Wall will be placed near the entrance of the Claiborne Parish Fair Building. Applications are being accepted with a $25 fee to cover the cost of the stainless steel plate and engraving. - Disabled Voters Need Doctor Statement For October 7 Election
- Voters who have disabilities and need assistance voting during absentee voting or on election day at the polls will be required to furnish a statement from you doctor or optometrist to the office of the Registrar of Voters, 318 East Main St., Homer, LA 71040, prior to the election or to the election commissioner on election day. Absentee voting for the October 7, 2000 election will be in the Registrar of Voters office September 25-30, Monday - Friday, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and on Saturday from 8:30 AM till noon.
