In a letter dated September 1, 2000, Murray Powell asked the Claiborne Parish Police Jury to accept his resignation effective September 7, 2000. The letter stated, "Following days of deliberation with my family, hours of prayer and in consideration of my district, I find it necessary to retire from my position. The events of the past few months have taken a toll on my family as well as myself, and I feel I cannot serve District 10 in the manner they deserve." |

Candidates For State Representative Attend Public Forum

Three of the four candidates running for State Representative in District 11 attended the public forum in Homer City Hall on Thursday, September 7. They were Huey Dean, Rick Gallo, and Ellen Smiley. Beverly Spearman said she was not notified until the day of the forum which also coincided with the regular meeting of the Grambling town council, of which she is a member. |
Drought Over, Rain Floods New Willis-Knighton Clinic

Since mid-June the Hill Farm Research Station recorded just over three inches of rain. According to lab technician Nancy Boddie, the Homer area received almost five inches this past weekend. August set a record for the least amount of rainfall in any August since 1950 with 0.17 inches. Before that it was 0.57 inches in August, 1992. The most rainfall recorded in August was 8.72 inches in 1998. Boddie said October 1963 is the only month since 1950 the Hill Farm showed no recordable rain for an entire month. |

Prostate Cancer And Early Detection: A Matter Of Life And Death
Prostate Cancer Awareness Week September 18-22, 2000
Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men, and it disproportionately impacts African-American men. Researchers estimate about 180,000 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States this year, which is about 36 percent of all cancer cases and only ten percent are due to genetic predisposition. An estimated 37,000 will die from the disease. In the last ten years, the number of deaths has increased by 50 percent and it is now more widespread in men than lung cancer. «Read the Article» |

Rhonda Martin To Speak At LSU AgCenter Water Meeting
Rhonda Martin with the Union County Conservation Commission in El Dorado, Arkansas will speak at an educational water meeting on Monday, September 18 at 6 PM in Homer City Hall. Martin will share some of the methods they have been implemented in the El Dorado area to address the problems with the lower water levels in the Sparta Aquifer. Haynesville's Butterfly Celebration Set To Begin Saturday
The Haynesville Celebration of Butterflies set for this weekend, September 16-17, at the Claiborne Parish Fairgrounds--9:30 AM-9 PM on Saturday and 10 AM-5 PM on Sunday. The festival will focus on nature: butterflies, other insects, butterfly gardening, native plants, herb gardening, conservation, nature craft vendors, and much more. Admission for the entire festival is $3 for adults, $2 for children ages 5-18, and free for children under 5 years. |

Fitzhugh will be speaking at junior high and high school assemblies across the parish promoting "OW2Play: Drug Free" program. - Homer High Cheerleaders To Hold Mini-Camp
- Homer High Cheerleaders will hold a mini-camp for students K-8th grade on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 9 AM-3 PM at the HHS basketball gym. Students will learn basic cheerleading skills, including a chant, cheer, and a spirit dance. All participants will receive a pair of Homer pom-poms and will perform pregame at the Homer/Loyola football game on September 29. Cost is $20 per student and lunch will be provided. - Homer Junior High will hold a "Parent Open House" on Thursday, September 14 from 4:00 - 5:30 PM to allow parents the opportunity to meet their child's teachers, view the school facility, and ask any questions they may have about their child's education.

- Historic Homes Needed For Sesquicentennial Tour of Homes

- Disabled Voters Need Doctor Statement For October 7 Election
- Voters who have disabilities and need assistance voting during absentee voting or on election day at the polls will be required to furnish a statement from you doctor or optometrist to the office of the Registrar of Voters, 318 East Main St., Homer, LA 71040, prior to the election or to the election commissioner on election day. Absentee voting for the October 7, 2000 election will be in the Registrar of Voters office September 25-30, Monday - Friday, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and on Saturday from 8:30 AM till noon.
- American Legion Waller-Bond Post 161 To Dedicate Memorial
- This Veteran's Day, November 11, 2000, the American Legion Post 161 of Haynesville will dedicate a Memorial Wall to veterans of WWI, WWII, Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Lebanon/Granada, Kosovo, Bosnia, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War and the Persian Gulf War. - Homer Memorial Hospital Schedules Breast Health Awareness Seminar
- Homer Memorial Hospital has scheduled a Breast Health Awareness seminar for Tuesday, October 3 at 6:30 PM in the hospital conference room. Information will be shared on the importance of breast health awareness, the proper way to perform monthly self-exam, and tips toward getting the best mammogram possible.
Available for questions will be physicians, mammography technologists, and breast cancer survivors. The program is open to women of all ages, and you do not have to be a cancer patient to attend. Door prizes donated by local merchants will be awarded. In conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Homer Memorial Hospital will offer reduced-fee screening mammograms during the month of October. - July 4th Fireworks For 2001 Opinion Poll Being Conducted
- The Lions Club Fireworks Committee is conducting a poll for the July 4, 2001 fireworks display on Lake Claiborne.
