Toy CO-2 Guns Lead To Charges For Four Juveniles

On Monday, September 4, three juveniles, aged 9 to 12, were strolling down North Main enjoying their holiday when a bad decision immediately put a stop to all their fun. Normally most businesses are closed for Labor Day, so the three young men had no idea anyone would be working at The Guardian-Journal just before 5 PM when they decided to shoot into the window and plate glass door with their "toy" CO-2 BB pistols.

Failure Of LEAP Test Prompts Suicide Attempt

One fifteen-year-old student felt life was not worth living anymore after failing the LEAP test in July for the second time. She had been a good student, had no behavior or discipline problems, but did have trouble grasping the math problems. She managed to make a passing grade, but after failing the math portion of the LEAP test for the second time, she was not promoted.

Atwood Uses His Talents To Develop Others Talents
Ron Atwood, a local artist, took on the task of helping develop the artistic talents of others when he asked to teach oil painting to some inmates at David Wade Correctional Center as part of a grant from the Shreveport Regional Arts Council.

At the Public Education Forum held August 31, BESE Board member Walter Lee said, "Louisiana simply does not put enough money into education in relation to other states." Lee, who is also School Superintendent in DeSoto Parish, says we need to put more money than other states if we expect to catch up. Money isn't everything but it takes money for remediation program needed for more stringent accountability. "We don't pay teachers enough and we don't get the best student going into teaching."

Huey Dean wants to let you, the citizens of District 11, know how proud he is to live in a country that gives someone like him the privilege to run for this office. Dean has lived in this area all of his life and he loves it very much. He believes there are many ways improvements can be made. He sees the poverty all around us and knows that our area of the United States has the highest rate of poverty, and it hurts him. He knows with the help of the community, much improvement can be made.


Annual Christmas Festival In Homer Set For Saturday, December 9

Chairman Buddy Pixley met August 23 with the several interested persons to begin making plans for this year's Christmas Festival planned for Saturday, December 9. The Committee discussed plans for the parade, entertainment, food booths, and possibly a Christmas Decoration contest. As done in the past, members discussed allowing various groups--marching bands, cheerleaders, dance lines, twirling groups, etc--to compete for trophies prior to the parade. The Festival will also include all-day entertainment and a variety of food booths.

Homer Woman Pleads Guilty In L&NW Railroad
Mail Fraud Case

Harmon, former employee of the Louisiana & Northwest (LN&W) Railroad, pled guilty in federal court in Shreveport to one count of mail fraud and one count of scheme and artifice to defraud.
