Summer Vacation Is Almost Over,
School Bells Will Ring Next Week

Summer vacation for students in Claiborne Parish is almost over and students are once again preparing to return to class. Parents are busy purchasing school supplies and, for the first time, many will be buying school uniforms. The school bells will begin ringing at Claiborne Academy on August 14, on August 16 for Mt. Olive students, and on August 21 for all public schools in Claiborne Parish. All students, except those at Pineview and Athens, will be required to dress in an appropriate school uniform.


Robertson Takes Seat On Council,
Tax Assessor Discusses Millages

Jess Robertson took his seat along side Selectmen Scott Roberson, Patricia Jenkins, and Ed Watson at the regular meeting of the Homer Town Council on Monday, August 7. Selectman Joe Merritt was absent. Robertson will replace Keith Beard as Selectman in District 3, until the Special Primary Election set by the State is held April 7, 2001. According to Town Clerk Lana Pugh, the Special General (run off) Election will be held Saturday, May 5, 2001, if needed.

House Speaker Charlie DeWitt today issued a proclamation calling for a special election to fill the vacancy in House District 11 created by the death of Rep. Pinkie Wilkerson.

Haynesville Celebration of ButterfliesIt's that time again! Your invitation to attend the Butterfly Festival on Saturday, September 16, 2000, beginning at Haynesville Celebration of Butterflies11 AM for the Children's Pageant and the quest for a new QUEEN MONARCH. The pageant is staged in conjunction with the second annual festival in "Celebration of Butterflies" in the Fair Barn of the Claiborne Parish Fair complex in Haynesville.


Warrants Issued For Local Men For Failure To Appear At Shave-Off
Warrants have been issued for the following individuals--Butch Bays, Dick Dorrell, Weldon Kilpatrick, Jack Price, Danny Volentine, Ed Watson, Charlie Bradshaw, Clyde Hightower, Bobby Liles, Scott "Doc" Roberson, and Kenneth Volentine, Jr., alias "Kenny Boy." These eleven men signed up to participate, but failed to appear at the Great Courthouse Square Shave Off held Saturday, August 5 at 9 AM, being held in conjunction with Homer's Sesquicentennial Celebration.

  • McClure And Homer FBLA Members Speak To Lions - June McClure and members of the Homer High FBLA who recently returned from an FBLA conference in Long Beach, CA, will speak at the noon meeting of the Homer Lions Club today, August 10, at noon at the Linder Motor Lodge. The guest speaker for Thursday, August 24, will be Bonnie Johnson.
     
  • CA Annual Back To School BBQ Monday, August 14 - The Claiborne Academy Annual Back-To-School Barbecue will be Monday, August 14. Plates are $6. Take outs will be available at 5 PM. Entertainment begins at 6:30 PM provided by CA Varsity and Jr. Varsity cheerleaders and Dixie Dancers, followed by the introduction to the 2000 Rebel football team. Tickets can be purchased from Booster Club members or at the door. For more information, call 927-2747.
     
  • Homer High Football Season Tickets On Sale At School - Season tickets for the five fall 2000 home football games at Homer High School will go on sale at the school office for $15, or $3 per game. Tickets will be $4 at the gate. Parking passes will also be on sale for $15 per space. If previous parking spaces are not renewed by Friday, August 25, they will be sold on a first come, first serve basis.
     
  • Ford Museum Is Seeking Church Artifacts, Histories - In preparation for the upcoming exhibit this fall, Folklife Traditions of Religion in Claiborne Parish, the Ford Museum is searching for church photographs (past and present), photographs depicting stained glass windows, church histories, and artifacts from the past.   • Triad Of Claiborne Sets Date For Senior Expo - Triad's SALT Council will sponsor its 7th Annual Senior Expo Saturday, August 26, at the Haynesville Fair Barn. The program will include senior fitness, long term care preparation, AARP benefits, Medicare -Medicaid update, entertainment and door prizes. Free health check.   • Donations Being Accepted At Hibernia For George Ogden - On July 10, George Ogden of Haynesville was severely injured in an accident. Anyone wishing to make donations for personal and medical expenses may do so at Hibernia Bank in Haynesville. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
     
  • Athens Meeting For Poultry Growers EPA Regulations - The LSU AgCenter will conduct an extremely informative program at 6 PM at the Mt. Olive School auditorium on Monday, August 14, for poultry producers concerned with upcoming EPA regulations being forced on animal agriculture. The program will entail programs concerning AFO/CAFO designations, TMDL's, EPA permitting of broiler growers and concentrated nutrient management plans. Each issue is swiftly approaching all poultry producers and will directly affect every day management practices. Speakers will be LSU AgCenter's Dr. Theresia LaVergne, State Poultry Specialist, and Matt Stephens, Area Poultry Waste Specialist.   • Last Claiborne Academy Last Work Day August 12 - The Claiborne Academy Booster Club will hold its last work day Saturday August 12 beginning at 8 AM. All are encouraged to participate. Bring yard tools (weed eaters, rakes, etc.) paint supplies (brushes, rollers, etc.) cleaning supplies, drinks and snacks.
     
  • Hill Farm Research Station To Hold Field Day September 21 - The LSU AgCenter's Hill Farm Research Station will host an educational Field Day from 2 PM to 6 PM, Thursday, September 21. The Hill Farm is located south of Homer, at the junction of US 79 and LA 9. AgCenter scientists and extension specialists will present information during field tours on various topics related to beef, dairy, forage and forestry production.   • Homer High School Class Of 1980 Plans Reunion - Several members of the Homer High Class of 1980 began making plans for their 20 year reunion. Tentative activities have been planned for the weekend of October 27 in conjunction with Homecoming 2000. Please respond by September 1, so they will know how many to expect and can estimate the costs.
        A commemorative booklet is being prepared. All graduates are encouraged to send information for the booklet whether they plan to attend or not. Ideas or suggestions are welcome and can be sent to either Edmonds or Dempsey as soon as possible.
     
  • Adults Education Center Enrolling Students For GED Program - The Adult Education Center is enrolling students who are 16 years of age or older who are interested in pursuing a GED, or refreshing basic skills. The next entrance assessment for the 2000-2001 school year will be at 8 AM Monday, August 21. Students who wish to enroll at a later date may call at any time during the school year to make arrangements for attending the program.   • Deadline To Sign Up For "Taste Of Homer" Extended - Individuals, businesses, restaurants, or churches interested in preparing a favorite dish for the "Taste Of Homer" on Saturday, November 11 during Homer's Sesquicentennial Celebration should sign up immediately and submit their recipes. Persons need only prepare a dish as they would for a reunion or a covered dish supper. Their recipe will be published in the "Sesquicentennial Cookbook," along with historical information and pictures of Homer and the surrounding Homer. Individuals may also submit recipes for the book, even if they do not wish to provide a dish. Cookbooks will be sold before and during the festival.
