At the regular meeting of the Board of Selectman for the Town of Homer, Councilman Keith Beard read a prepared statement announcing his resignation effective July 3. Beard said he and his family would be moving to Ruston later this month. Both he and his wife have accepted teaching jobs at Choudrant High School in Lincoln Parish. |
Jury Approves Renewing Ambulance Contract With AMR

Ambulance service for E-911 was one of the topics at the regular meeting of the Claiborne Parish Police Jury on Friday, July 7. E911 Administrator Glenda Greer said the Claiborne Parish Communications Board (E911) advertised for bids and met June 22 to review the applications. She said all the bids were very good and it was a difficult decision, but the vote was unanimous to renew the contract with American Medical Response Ambulance Service (AMR). |

Shooting Investigation Continuing
The Homer Police Department officers have arrested one suspect and are continuing their investigation of a shooting which occurred at approximately 2:25 AM on July 2. Officers were dispatched to the Homer Memorial Hospital where they found the victim of an apparent gunshot wound. Darryl A. Presley of Haynesville, being treated. |

- "The Harvey Rabbit and Friends Show"
- Appearing at the Claiborne Parish Library on Saturday, July 15, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. It features Harvey, the Talking Rabbit, Cecil the Orangutan, and T-Boy the Alligator with Laura and Tim Allured in a fun-filled, energetic show of ventriloquism, puppetry, music, magic, comedy and audience participation.
Laura and Tim of Lafayette, have been headline entertainers with Canuval Cruise Lines out or Miami, and on the Mississippi Queen of the Delta Queen Steamboat Company out of New Orleans. They have appeared on ABC's "America's Funniest People", "Good Morning, America", "World News Tonight" and in Branson, MO. In 1985, Laura won flrst place in the Senior Ventriloquist Convention in Ft. Mitchell, KY. Since 1986, the Allureds have toured elementary schools throughout Louisiana, southeast Texas, and Mississippi, in their own entertaining, educational school programs. Also, they have been familiar races at libraries throughout Louisiana as guest performers for the Summer Reading Program since 1991. They have produced three Harvey Rabbit videos -- "Hooray for the Drug-Free Team!", "Put on the Brakes!", and "Show Some "Character!" - and have hosted a Lake Charles cable TV show called "The Harvey Rabbit Cartoon Hour". - Mayfield High Class Of 1970 To Hold Reunion July 21-23

- July Hunter Education Classes Begin Today, July 13
- Hunter Education Classes are set for July and August at the Homer Fire Station. On July 13, 14, and 15, classes will be held from 6-9:30 PM. On August 9, 10, and 12, classes will be held from 8 AM-Noon. Pre-registration is required as classes are limited to 30 persons. Participants must be at least ten years old. American Legion Post 161 Haynesville To Meet July 20
- The American Legion Post 161 will meet Thursday, July 20 at Carol's Cafe in Haynesville at 11:30 AM. The Post meets every third Thursday.
- Claiborne Academy Work Days Announced
- The Claiborne Academy Booster Club will hold work days Sat. July 22, and August 12, beginning at 8 AM. All are encouraged to participate. Bring yard tools (weed eaters, rakes, etc.) paint supplies (brushes, rollers, etc.) cleaning supplies, drinks and snacks.
- Cancer Support Group To Meet Thursday, July 20
- The American Cancer Society is helping organize a cancer support group for men and woman of all ages in Claiborne Parish. "The Group" will meet the third Thursday of odd months beginning July 20 at Grace Bible Church at 113 Beech Street in Homer, from 6:30-8:00 PM. - Ford Museum Is Seeking Church Artifacts, Histories
- In preparation for the upcoming exhibit this fall, Folklife Traditions of Religion in Claiborne Parish, the Ford Museum is searching for church photographs (past and present), photographs depicting stained glass windows, church histories, and artifacts from the past. Call 927-9190.
- Free Cancer Screening And Free Transportation
- The Feist-Weiller Cancer Center at LSU Medical Center is sponsoring a free community "Partners in Wellness" health screening program at several Shreveport locations Sat. July 15 and Sat., July 22, from 7:30 AM-2 PM. It is open to anyone not receiving routine health screening for prostate, colorectal, breast, or cervical cancer, or cardiovascular disease. - Homer Mayfield Classes of 1957, 1958, 1959 To Hold Reunion
- The Homer-Mayfield High School Class of 1957, 1958, and 1959 will have their class reunion on Saturday, August 5 and Sunday, August 6 in Bossier City. - Claiborne Parish Student Release Applications At CPSB
- The Claiborne Parish School Board recently put into effect guidelines for parents/guardians requesting a release for their child from Claiborne Parish Schools. Approved releases would allow parents/guardians to seek educational services for their child in other parish school systems while still residing in Claiborne Parish.
The School Board will grant out-of-district releases only in exceptional cases where a hardship (not inconvenience) is clearly demonstrated. Releases approved are for no longer than one school year. Students who were released for the 99-00 school session much re-apply for the 00-01 school session. Applications and copies of release guidelines are available at the School Board office at 415 East Main in Homer.
- Country, Bluegrass, Gospel Music Every Friday In Homer
- Every Friday night in downtown Homer, amateur musicians from all over the Ark-La-Tex meet at the Homer Fire Station to enjoy a little country, bluegrass, gospel, and fellowship. - Swim Lessons In July At Homer Natatorium And Mayfield Pool
- Certified lifeguards will offer swimming lessons at the Homer Natatorium from July 3-14 for children ages 1 to 4 from 10--11 AM, and for ages 5 and up from 11 AM till noon. Cost for lessons is $25 per child. The Mayfield Pool Swim Camp will be held Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 21 from 5-7 PM, age one and up, at a cost of $15 per child.
Homer Natatorium hours are 12:30-5:30 PM, Monday through Saturday and 12:30-7:30 PM on Tuesdays. Mayfield Pool hours are 2-7 PM Monday through Friday and 12 Noon-7 PM on Saturday. - Deadline To Sign Up For "Taste Of Homer" Extended
- Individuals, businesses, restaurants, or churches interested in preparing a favorite dish for the "Taste Of Homer" on Saturday, November 11 during Homer's Sesquicentennial Celebration should sign up immediately and submit their recipes. Persons need only prepare a dish as they would for a reunion or a covered dish supper. Their recipe will be published in the "Sesquicentennial Cookbook," along with historical information and pictures of Homer and the surrounding Homer. Books will be sold during the festival. - Pam Suggs, Claiborne Parish Librarian, is seeking items that reflect the community in year 2000 for the time capsule to be buried as part of the Sesquicentennial Celebration on November 11. - Smoke Detectors For The Elderly Offered through TRIAD
- TRIAD of Claiborne wants all seniors age 65 and above, to have a smoke detector. You may also qualify if you're disabled. Having a smoke detector can mean the difference of life or death.
