The War America Forgot Celebrates Fiftieth Anniversary

It was almost fifty years ago when local resident Elvira Winzer received notice that her son, Auteria, was "missing in action." What she wouldn't know for four days was that he was lying, wounded in a muddy rice paddy just outside of Haman. Winzer had been hit by machine gun fire on September 15, 1950, just nine days after arriving in Korea--making him the first person from Claiborne Parish to be wounded during the Korea Conflict.

Hospital Board Adds New Doctors To Active Medical Staff

At the regular board meeting at noon on June 27, the Homer Memorial Hospital Board re-appointed the Medical Staff, including the new appointments of Donald Scott Haynes (Internal Medicine) and Maria M. Haynes (Pediatrics) to the active staff.

Fireworks, Boat Parade Set For Tuesday, July 4 On Lake - The Claiborne Parish Sheriff's Office will lead the Patriotic Boat Parade on Tuesday, July 4, starting at 7:30 PM. Boats are asked to display an American Flag and other patriotic decorations and will gather about 7 PM on the water near Pleasure Point. The parade route will also include the State Park, Sport Pointe, Public Boat Launch, Coleman Creek, Gladney Bay and Port-Au-Prince. No jet skis will be allowed.   American Legion To Meet Tonight June 29 At Library - American Legion Post 73 will meet 7 PM Thurs. June 29, at Claiborne Parish Library.   Free Skin Cancer Screening At Lemlo Clinic June 30 - The Lemlo Clinic at 1953 East Main in Haynesville will hold a "free skin cancer screening" 9 AM-1 PM Fri. June 30.   Homer-Mayfield Reunion Committee To Meet - The monthly meeting for the Homer-Mayfield School Reunion will be held Monday, July 10, (not July 4) at 100 Circle Dr.-Apt. 16. Box 477, Homer.   Town Councils, Police Jury And School Board To Meet - The Homer Town Council will hold a public hearing at 4 PM on Friday, June 30, followed by Special Called Meeting to adopt the 2000-2001 budget. The regular meeting will be Mon. July 10 at 6 PM.      The Claiborne Parish Police Jury meeting was changed to Thursday, July 6 and Friday, July 7 at 10 AM.      The Claiborne Parish School Board will hold their regular meeting Thursday, July 13, at 7 PM, following the work session at 6 PM, to allow time to interview applicants for the Homer High principal position.      The Haynesville Town Council will meet Tuesday, July 11 at 6 PM.   Triad Of Claiborne Sets Date For Senior Expo - Triad's SALT Council will sponsor its 7th Annual Senior Expo Saturday, August 26, at the Haynesville Fair Barn. The program will include senior fitness, long term care preparation, AARP benefits, Medicare -Medicaid update, entertainment and door prizes. Free health check. Contact Alf Pike at 927-2011 or 927-3796.   Claiborne Academy Work Days Announced - The Claiborne Academy Booster Club will hold work days on Saturday, July 8, July 22, and August 12 beginning at 8 AM. Everyone is encouraged to participate and bring yard tools (weed eaters, rakes, etc.), painting supplies (brushes, rollers, etc.) cleaning supplies, drinks and snacks.   Donations Being Collected For Bailey Family - Fire totally destroyed the home of Roger and Debra Bailey in the Colquitt Community near Haynesville Wednesday, May 24. Donations to help the family can be made at any First Guaranty Bank location.   Ford Museum Seeking Church Artifacts, Histories - In preparation for the upcoming exhibit this fall, Folklife Traditions of Religion in Claiborne Parish, the Ford Museum is searching for church photographs (past and present), photographs depicting stained glass windows, church histories, and artifacts from the past. Call 927-9190 for info.   Town And Parish Offices Will Be Closed Tuesday, July 4 - The Town of Homer and the Claiborne Parish Police Jury will close Tuesday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day. The Claiborne Parish School Board will close Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.   Country, Bluegrass, Gospel Music Every Friday In Homer - Every Friday night in downtown Homer, amateur musicians from all over the Ark-La-Tex meet at the Homer Fire Station to enjoy a little country, bluegrass, gospel, and fellowship. Anyone is welcome to join in, or just sit back and enjoy. This plan sets local policy for promotion, retention, and testing of students in Claiborne Parish schools. Local residents may view the draft plan and make comments at the Claiborne Parish School Board office at 415 East Main during regular business hours.   June 30 Deadline To Sign Up For "Taste Of Homer" Recipe - Individuals, businesses, restaurants, or churches interested in preparing a favorite dish for the "Taste Of Homer" on Saturday, November 11 during Homer's Sesquicentennial Celebration should sign up immediately and submit their recipe no later than June 30. A cookbook containing these recipes, along with historical information and pictures of historical sites in and around Homer, will be sold this fall. Awards will be given to longest beard from scratch, longest beard, best looking beard on an elected official, and best looking beard in 1850 costume. For more info, call Nipper at 927-2578.   Items Being Collected For Sesquicentennial Time Capsule - Pam Suggs, Claiborne Parish Librarian, is seeking items that reflect the community in year 2000 for the time capsule to be buried as part of the Sesquicentennial Celebration on November 11. Any civic organization, school, church or individual interested in making a contribution or to obtain more information about what items can be submitted, call Suggs at the Claiborne Parish Public Library at 927-3845.   Haynesville Woodson Reunion Talent Show Set For June 29 - The Haynesville Woodson Reunion Talent Show will be held Thursday, June 29 at 7 PM in the Haynesville High School auditorium.   Haynesville Gospel Explosion 2000 - The Haynesville-Woodson Reunion presents in concert July 2, 3:00 pm, the Grammy/Stellar Award-Winning "Williams Brothers" in the Haynesville High School Auditorium. Swim Lessons In July At Homer Natatorium And Mayfield Pool - Certified lifeguards will offer swimming lessons at the Homer Natatorium from July 3-14 for children ages 1 to 4 from 10--11 AM, and for ages 5 and up from 11 AM till noon. Pools will close July 4th. Cost for lessons is $25 per child. The Mayfield Pool Swim Camp will be held Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 21 from 5-7 PM for children, age one and up, at a cost of $15 per child.      Homer Natatorium pool hours are 12:30-5:30 PM, Monday through Saturday and 12:30-7:30 PM on Tuesdays. Mayfield pool hours are 2-7 PM Monday through Friday and 12 Noon-7 PM on Saturday. Admission is $1.25 per day, $10 for 10-day pass, or $35 for season pass. Clown Rudy Burns will be the nightly entertainment at 8 PM each night at Gantt's arena on Hwy. 518 east of Athens.   Adult Education Classes At Homer Vo-Tech Start July 5 - Adult Education Classes at the Claiborne Vo-Tech School, F.A. "Red" Davis Campus, will be closed until July 5, 2000. Those who are 16 years of age or older and are interested in pursuing a GED or refreshing basic skills may enroll at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, July 5. Predator" Topic At Lake Claiborne State Park - Guests can learn about the survival strategies of both predators and their prey at this unique evening program to be held from 7 - 8 PM on Saturday, July 8. The Group is open to anyone experiencing grief over a recent or past loss. You may also qualify if you're disabled. Having a smoke detector can mean the difference of life or death. Smoke detectors are available without charge. For more info call (800) 281-7885 or the 24-Hour Crisis Line at (318) 251-2255.   June 30 Is Deadline For Homer High Class Of 1990 Reunion - The Homer High Class of 1990 will hold their 10-year reunion July 28 - 30, beginning at 6 PM Friday, July 28 with a "Get Reacquainted" at the Linder Motor Lodge. A family-oriented picnic will be held from 11 AM - 3 PM at the Lake Claiborne State Park, followed by a party at Homer City Hall from 6 PM to midnight, then conclude Sunday morning, July 30, at St. John Baptist Church. Reservations can be made by sending $25 for single or $50 for a family to Sonya Moore, 1105 Monroe Ave., Homer, LA 71040 no later than Friday, June 30. Anyone interested in helping organize the reunion should attend the meeting at the Jaycee Park at 11 AM on July 8 to finalize plans.   Claiborne Council On Aging - Events for June 2000   Claiborne Parish Police Jury Offers $500 Reward - In order to alleviate littering and illegal dumping of trash on rural parish roads, the Claiborne Parish Police Jury is offering a $500 reward to anyone offering information which leads to the prosecution of someone dumping illegally or littering parish roads within Claiborne Parish. If you have information, please call the Police Jury office at 927-2222 or the Claiborne Parish Sheriff's Office at 927-2011.   Hunter Education Classes Set For July And August - Hunter Education classes are scheduled for July 13, 14, and 15 and for August 9, 10, and 12 at the Homer Fire Station, according to Deputy Ken Bailey, hunter training officer. July classes will be held from 6 to 9:30 PM. August classes will be from 8 AM till noon. Pre-registration is required as classes are limited to 30 persons per class. Participants must be at least ten years old.
